LaserJet M1522nf (CB534A#ABA; documented US low-voltage configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A prepared small wired office printing a recommended 250–2,000 black pages monthly, capturing one-sided documents and using suitable analog telephone service.

The main tradeoff

Print duplex is manual, Legal scanning uses the feeder, and panel scan buttons need compatible full software with the computer and HP ToolboxFX running. Current software compatibility needs checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a prepared Ethernet office scan one-sided Legal originals in color, print black documents and fax at 1,000 printed pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible full software and suitable telephone service. Legal originals use the feeder. Scan buttons require the computer and HP ToolboxFX running with destinations configured.

Shared black printing with fax, provided the computer is prepared

The HP LaserJet M1522nf is an earlier monochrome print, copy, scan and fax station for a small wired office. Its useful combination is a 250-sheet main tray, a small priority input and a 50-page original feeder. Choose it for ordinary documents and occasional color capture, with the deciding limitation that two-sided printing requires manual refeeding.

HP's exact US reference identifies CB534A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. This assessment concerns the documented US low-voltage configuration, 110–127 V at 50/60 Hz. The separate 220–240 V edition is not a universal-voltage alternative; inspect the actual unit's identification and electrical plate.

HP declares up to 24 Letter pages per minute, separately 23 ppm on A4. Its recommended monthly range is 250–2,000 printed pages; 8,000 is maximum duty rather than a recurring workload recommendation. These are maker figures, not measured review results.

Scan buttons depend on installed software and an awake computer

The included connections are computer USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet. The original installer offers separate USB and network installations, with a recommended full software package or a smaller driver installation. Printing successfully does not establish that the scan buttons and destinations have been prepared.

The operating guide expressly supports starting scans with a computer connected by USB or network. For the panel's Scan To routine, install the full software, keep HP ToolboxFX running and leave the computer on. Program the file, application or email destination in HP LaserJet Scan before selecting it at the printer.

That is a computer-assisted workflow. It should not be confused with a modern printer independently authenticating to a shared folder or SMTP server. The documented email route creates an attachment through a compatible MAPI email program. The original Mac procedure instead offers Save To File in HP Director. TWAIN and WIA acquisition are also described, subject to the actual software and operating system.

Windows XP, Vista and contemporary Mac systems dominate the original compatibility lists. The older sheet specifically limits Windows 2000 and Server 2003 network operation to printing. Verify a working full scan installation for today's intended computer before relying on these historical instructions.

Legal pages use the feeder; delicate originals use the glass

The flatbed captures Letter or A4 originals in color, with up to 1,200 ppi documented. The feeder handles a stack of suitable ordinary originals, with up to 300 ppi color capture. A higher enhanced resolution is a software figure and does not turn the feeder into the glass scanner.

The actual loading instructions give the feeder a maximum of 8.5 by 14 inches and 50 sheets on an 80-g/m² or 20-lb basis. Letter, Legal and A4 originals fit that route. Extend its support for pages longer than Letter or A4, load the original stack face up and adjust the guides. An older brochure lists a longer feeder maximum; the reviewed routine follows the narrower operating instructions.

Use the glass for photographs, fragile originals and items with unsuitable attachments. Remove staples and clips before feeding paperwork. The documented two-sided copy process requires turning originals manually; this assessment does not promise automatic duplex or single-pass feeder capture.

Paper saving takes an attended second pass

Ordinary input totals 260 sheets: 250 in the main tray and ten in the priority inlet. The original size table positively includes Letter, Legal and A4 in both. Its ordinary-paper capacity basis is 75–104 g/m², or 20–27 lb; heavier media can have different limits. The 125-sheet output and 50-page original feeder add no blank-paper capacity.

For two-sided printing, choose the manual option in the driver, print the first side and follow the stack-orientation instructions before feeding the pages through Tray 1 again. This requires someone at the printer and cannot satisfy an automatic-duplex requirement. Select the actual size and media type for envelopes; the guide permits one in the priority input or up to ten in the main tray.

Fax, supplies and placement complete the check

The nf adds the fax modem and two RJ-11 telephone ports missing from the n. Fax needs suitable telephone service, independently of Ethernet. HP does not guarantee every digital PBX, converter or VoIP arrangement. Private fax reception is not proof of PIN-held computer printing.

The original introductory cartridge is declared around 1,000 pages, with CB436A replacement around 2,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. Actual yield and remaining toner vary. The body measures approximately 19.5 by 16 by 15.8 inches and 24.2 pounds, with operating access still needed. Prefer a model with positively documented automatic duplex and current software when those are daily requirements.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided rate up to 24 monochrome Letter ppm, separately 23 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly printing 250–2,000 pages; 8,000 maximum duty is separate. Older brochure acoustic footnote uses an inconsistent 27-ppm condition and is not the print-speed evidence.

Paper handling

250-sheet main tray plus ten-sheet priority inlet equals 260 ordinary input sheets, with Letter/Legal/A4 positively checked in both original columns. Capacity is rated for ordinary 75–104-g/m², 20–27-lb paper; lighter or heavier stock has different limits. Output 125 and original feeder 50 are separate. Manual print duplex requires attended refeeding through Tray 1; automatic duplex false. Envelopes: one priority or up to ten main-tray, correct size and type selected.

Scanning arrangement

Color Letter/A4 flatbed up to 1,200 ppi and 50-sheet feeder up to 300 ppi. Actual feeder loading specifies max 216 × 356 mm, 8.5 × 14 inches, with 80-g/m² or 20-lb original basis and support extension for longer pages. Earlier brochure 15-inch feeder length differs; operating 14-inch limit retained. Glass expressly max Letter/A4, not Legal. Actual two-sided copying is manual; automatic scan duplex and single-pass mechanism are not confirmed.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet, independently of two RJ-11 telephone ports. Full compatible software supports computer scanning over USB or network; older Windows 2000/Server 2003 network arrangements are print-only. Wireless, Wi-Fi Direct and mobile protocols are not established. Bonjour discovery is not treated as AirPrint.

Supplies and declared yields

Original introductory toner around 1,000 pages; CB436A replacement around 2,000, maker-declared ISO/IEC 19752 basis and variable actual yield. No remaining-toner, availability or cost-per-page claim. Readiris is separately installed computer OCR software, not embedded scanner OCR.

Software and support

Actual Scan To needs recommended full software, HP ToolboxFX running, computer on and programmed destinations. Start Scan supports USB or network. Windows LaserJet Scan/TWAIN/WIA and Mac HP Director Save To File are documented; verify current host compatibility. Email attachments use a compatible MAPI application. No standalone printer SMTP or shared-folder authentication is inferred from the computer-assisted folder routine. Private fax reception does not establish PIN-held computer printing.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact discontinued US CB534A#ABA identity independently confirmed by HP US reference. Review is limited to documented low-voltage 110–127 V, 50/60-Hz configuration; higher-voltage edition separate and actual electrical plate must match. Body 19.5 × 16 × 15.8 inches and 24.2 lb, cartridge basis unstated; allow original loading, tray access and cables. Analog fax needs suitable telephone service; PBX/VoIP compatibility is conditional.
