LaserJet M4345 MFPIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Established wired offices needing monochrome print/copy, color Letter/A4 glass or Legal feeder files and configured SMTP or network-folder delivery, with manual print duplex acceptable.

The main tradeoff

The base includes neither automatic print duplex nor analog fax. USB does not carry computer scanning, and Legal feeder support does not make the glass Legal-sized.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier base M4345 send two-sided Legal color originals through Ethernet while holding supported print jobs for a PIN, with 600 included Legal sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible printer driver and an actually configured working SMTP gateway or administrator-enabled network folder. The feeder supports automatic two-sided capture; print output is monochrome and automatic print duplex is not included.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can I use USB alone to scan receipts into the computer because this model has a flatbed?

Fails the USB computer-scan requirement. USB is a printer connection here; documented file delivery uses native Ethernet with configured SMTP or network folders.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will an unmodified base M4345 automatically print both sides of A4 from its Ethernet driver?

Fails automatic print duplex. The base unit has a manual refeed routine; the automatic duplexer is an optional accessory, separately included on equipped variants.

For wired document capture when printed pages can remain one-sided

The base HP LaserJet M4345 MFP suits an established wired office that needs monochrome documents, standalone copies and color files delivered through configured network services. Its important distinction is that automatic two-sided scanning is built in, while automatic two-sided printing and analog fax hardware are optional. A shared family description can easily hide that difference.

This is the M4345 generation, identified as CB425A in HP's original comparison and US selection guide. HP's US product page explicitly marks it discontinued and displays option CB425A#BCC. This assessment covers the separately documented US low-voltage M4345 configuration, 110–127 volts at 50/60 Hz; it does not claim that every regional option has that supply. Inspect the actual rating label before installing a previously owned machine.

HP declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 43 A4. These are maker rates rather than measurements from this review. The original US selection guide recommends 5,000–20,000 printed pages monthly. Its separate 200,000-page maximum duty figure is not a routine monthly target.

A real color scanner with a monochrome print engine

The 50-sheet automatic document feeder supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 originals. Its automatic duplex scan feature and the e-mail screen's original-sides setting are documented independently of the optional print duplexer. Select a two-sided original when sending a double-sided document; do not assume the default reads its back. The sources establish automatic capture, but do not establish a single-pass mechanism.

The glass accepts Letter and A4 originals and is the instructed choice for receipts, worn documents, photos and books. Legal originals belong in the feeder: the supported feeder length does not establish a Legal-sized glass. Place glass originals face down and feeder originals face up. Color scanning produces color electronic files; printed output and photocopies remain monochrome.

Optical scan resolution is up to 600 dpi. Higher resolution and output-quality settings increase file size, so choose settings for the destination instead of treating the largest file as automatically preferable. For repeated folders or e-mail recipients, the administrator can configure destinations rather than requiring every operator to recreate them.

Ethernet carries sending; USB carries printing

Included connections are an embedded Jetdirect 10/100 Ethernet interface and USB 2.0 computer port. A compatible printer driver is still needed. The original USB instructions specify an A-to-B cable; a USB socket does not turn this model into a desktop USB scanner.

For network capture, HP documents configured SMTP e-mail and administrator-enabled network folders. E-mail requires a usable gateway address, appropriate authentication when required and a working network arrangement. Folder sending needs an available destination and suitable permissions. These are actual delivery paths to files on a computer or in its mailbox, rather than a promise of a modern pull-scan app.

The setup guide configures digital sending through the printer's IP address in a browser. Verify gateway and destination compatibility with the actual present network; the manual's old operating-system list is not evidence that every current server or security policy works unchanged. HP separately says Send to E-mail and Send to Folder do not work through the PC USB connection.

Wireless adapters are optional. Included AirPrint or Mopria operation is not established here, and an Ethernet interface alone does not prove either mobile protocol. Optional Digital Sending Software workflow destinations likewise do not become included features merely because they appear in the family manual.

Six hundred ordinary sheets, with manual second-side work

The base includes a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and one 500-sheet cassette, totaling 600 ordinary sheets. The original tables explicitly include Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds, with capacities stated for 75-g/m² paper. Extra 500-sheet cassettes, the 75-envelope feeder and finishing accessories are separate purchases.

Without the optional duplexer, the supported driver can guide a manual second pass. The Windows instructions reload the printed stack into tray 1, printed side up and bottom edge first, after removing blank paper; follow the actual prompts and continue at the panel when requested. Allow operator time and verify page order before a long job.

Tray 1 also handles up to ten supported envelopes, using the specified size, weight and one-sided path. It is not a 600-envelope feed. The paper cassette allows 60–120-g/m² stock, but the print routine warns against duplex paper above 105 g/m². Media-specific instructions take precedence over a broad weight headline.

Private jobs, toner and operating space

The included M4345-generation hard disk is 40GB; it is not the older non-M 4345's 20GB unit. With a compatible driver, Private Job takes a user name, job name and four-digit PIN. The user retrieves that job at the control panel and enters the PIN before release. Released private jobs are deleted; the guide also warns that power-off deletes temporary private jobs.

The exact black cartridge is Q5945A. HP's historical declaration is up to 18,000 pages at five-percent coverage, not an ISO yield or a remaining-toner guarantee. Its body is approximately 30.0 inches wide, 19.0 deep and 21.5 high; open trays, scanner access and service space require considerably more room. If automatic print duplex, included fax or substantially more standard input is essential, choose the documented equipped variant rather than silently adding its hardware to this base model.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided black Letter rate up to 45 ppm, separately 43 A4. Recommended US monthly printing 5,000–20,000, separate 200,000 maximum duty; no measured or duplex throughput inferred. UK regional table gives a different 15,000 recommended maximum; reviewed US table and original US selection guide agree 20,000.

Paper handling

Base CB425A includes 100-sheet tray 1 plus 500-sheet tray 2, total 600 ordinary 75-g/m² Letter/Legal/A4 sheets. Extra 500-sheet cassettes, duplexer, analog fax, 75-envelope feeder and finishing units are optional. Manual duplex driver routine reloads printed stack into tray 1 printed side up/bottom edge first. Tray 1 envelopes up to ten at 75–105 g/m², one-sided path; not ordinary input capacity. Cassette 60–120 g/m²; print-duplex procedure conservatively says no heavier than 105 g/m².

Scanning arrangement

600-dpi optical color digital sending, independent of monochrome print/copy. Glass Letter/A4; 50-sheet feeder Letter/Legal/A4 at 75 g/m², permitted 60–120 g/m². Positive automatic two-sided feeder and original-sides control, physical reversing versus single-pass mechanism not established. Color one-/two-sided files over configured LAN SMTP e-mail, also administrator-enabled network folder; no USB capture. Glass originals face down; feeder face up. Legal feeder is not a Legal glass.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2.0 type-B computer printing and embedded Jetdirect 10/100 Ethernet. Digital sending requires native LAN and configured SMTP gateway/account or enabled network destination with suitable permissions; USB does not carry Send to E-mail/Folder. Optional wireless or mobile accessory not included. AirPrint/Mopria base support unconfirmed; no radio or cloud service inferred.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact HP Q5945A black cartridge, original guide declares up to 18,000 pages at historical 5% coverage. Not an ISO/IEC 19752 claim or measured yield. Supplied cartridge remaining capacity, current availability and current page cost unknown. 40-GB included hard drive is documented for the M4345 generation; not older non-M 4345 20-GB hardware.

Software and support

Compatible installed printer driver required. Original job storage includes private jobs: select Private Job, user/job name and four-digit PIN; release in control-panel Job Storage/Retrieve with PIN. Included 40-GB drive, no borrowed extra USB-storage prerequisite. Private job deleted after release; original guide warns power-off deletes temporary private/QuickCopy/proof jobs. Historical OS lists are not current driver guarantees. SMTP gateway or folder compatibility must be verified with actual current network; optional Digital Sending Software workflows not included.

Electrical edition and setup

US exact base CB425A identity and explicit US store discontinued notice (displayed CB425A#BCC) combined with original documented 110–127-V 50/60-Hz US configuration; option code itself is not an electrical crosswalk. Separate 220–240-V editions must not be converted. Body 30.0×19.0×21.5 inches; original guide 97.2 lb excludes toner, HP support 46.5 kg includes toner, so no unqualified body weight field. Original all-open envelope 56.0×34.5×35.0 inches differs from closed body; actual installed accessories and service access require checking.
