HP M234sdwe: connected black printing with a simplex document feeder review

The HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe is a compact monochrome print/copy/scan model with a 40-page automatic document feeder. It suits a modest black-document routine that includes single-sided batches, but the feeder cannot scan both sides automatically. Its other deciding condition is HP+: the printer requires an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP toner throughout its life.

The exact US package is discontinued 6GX01E#BGJ, with a documented 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz electrical edition. An earlier example needs a checked account/setup route, working software and verified actual contents. The historical six-month Instant Ink promotion is not a promise of a currently redeemable offer.

Separate the service subscription from the printer requirements

Instant Ink enrollment is optional in HP's exact product disclosure. Its terms allow cancellation and a return to ordinary Original HP Standard or XL cartridges. Cancellation does not remove this HP+ printer's separate account, internet and Original HP requirements. A buyer wanting a fully offline printer should choose around those ongoing conditions before considering the hardware.

The original HP+ operating guide requires network setup first. Its rear USB port can be used afterward, but the printer must remain connected to the internet. A computer USB cable is therefore not an offline exception or a substitute for the initial setup. Supply and management settings should not be read as permission to ignore the specific HP+ restrictions.

A simplex feeder for longer originals

The exact scanner reference gives a 40-sheet feeder with a maximum of 8.5 by 14 inches, supporting Letter, Legal and A4 originals. Color capture is documented even though printed output is black and white. HP explicitly says duplex ADF scanning is unavailable, so a two-sided stack needs an attended manual process.

Place feeder originals face up. Portrait pages enter top first, while landscape pages enter left edge first; slide them until the tone and adjust both guides. Avoid feeding photographs or unsuitable originals. Some copy features, including Fit to Page, require the scanner glass instead.

The glass is independently present. Remove feeder originals before raising the lid, place the original face down at the rear-left marking and close the lid. Its exact scan-size boundary is not established for this suffix in the reviewed sections; the feeder's Legal maximum is not assigned to the glass.

The documented computer capture route uses the configured HP scanning application to acquire from the printer, edit and save the result locally. Camera scanning inside the application is a different activity. Current application names and supported systems can change, so verify the intended software and its printer-scanner controls.

Printing and scanning have different duplex limits

Automatic two-sided printing is standard, independently of the simplex scanner. HP declares up to 30 Letter pages per minute, separately 29 ppm on A4. Recommended print volume is 200–2,000 pages monthly, while 20,000 maximum duty is a separate limit. None of those numbers is a measured review result.

The included input holds 150 ordinary sheets and the output 100. The original feeder is for documents being captured, not extra blank-paper storage. Letter, Legal and A4 print sizes are confirmed. The reviewed exact sources do not provide a complete size-specific automatic-duplex list, so that path remains qualified only when the paper-size choice is flexible here.

Load suitable stock using the correct guides, orientation and paper setting. Legal sheets need the documented input-cover clearance. Envelopes use their separate supported routine and ten-envelope ceiling; they do not inherit automatic duplex from ordinary office paper.

Wired, network and direct printing remain different arrangements

Fast Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi are included, with the post-setup USB arrangement described above. A compatible desktop scanner application can save files through its configured route. The icon display and copy controls do not establish a standalone touchscreen SMTP or network-folder destination system.

AirPrint and Mopria provide local network printing. Genuine Wi-Fi Direct is also supported, with the original guide explicitly describing AirPrint peer printing. Direct printing still does not waive HP+'s internet requirement or establish the same computer-scanning and paper-control combination. Connection passwords are not evidence of PIN-held print release.

HP's mobile fax language describes sending through application services; the exact hardware specification says Fax No. This assessment therefore does not count an analog fax machine or telephone receiving capability.

Use the correct supplies and allow access

The original US box lists roughly 700 toner pages. Replacement 134A W1340A and 134X W1340X are declared around 1,100 and 2,400 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing conditions. Actual yields vary; European cartridge numbers and remaining toner are separate questions.

The feeder-equipped body is approximately 16.46 by 12.13 by 11.59 inches and 20.95 pounds, with greater open depth and height. Choose it for documented single-sided batch capture and connected black printing when the HP+ conditions fit, leaving room for paper, scanner and supply access.
