Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an earlier P1005 print ordinary monochrome Legal documents over USB with 150 included sheets and a 1,500-page monthly recommendation?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, a compatible computer driver and separately purchased cable. Its main feed explicitly supports Legal; automatic duplex is not requested.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it provide 160 included A4 sheets like the P1006 configuration?
Fails that capacity requirement. The P1005 has a 150-sheet main tray and short-media extender; the separate ten-sheet priority feed is specifically limited to other models.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically complete both sides of Letter documents?
Fails automatic print duplex. The documented compatible-driver routine requires the user to reload the first-side output stack and continue side two.
Explore this need in the finder →A small USB printer whose limits are easy to define
The HP LaserJet P1005 suits a compatible computer producing modest batches of monochrome documents. Its useful arrangement is a single 150-sheet input tray and a USB connection. It requires user handling for two-sided output, and it has no included network connection, wireless radio or scanner.
HP's US supply listing identifies the exact printer as CB410A#ABA. This is an earlier model assessment based on its original manual and surviving maker specifications, not a current-stock claim. Unlike the separate P1006 listing, the material read here does not provide an explicit P1005 discontinued notice.
The reviewed US electrical configuration is 110–127 volts at 60Hz. HP also lists a separate 220–240-volt, 50-Hz edition. The original warning makes clear that power depends on the region and must not be converted. Check the actual machine's rating rather than treating those two entries as a universal power supply.
Prepare the computer and cable before the first job
This is a host-based USB printer. The exact specifications name Hi-Speed USB 2.0, say wireless capability is absent and identify no optional connection. The USB cable is purchased separately. An appropriate cable and an actually compatible printer driver are part of the working arrangement.
The original installation sequence starts the software setup before connecting USB and tells the user to connect when prompted. Its historical Windows and Mac lists describe the software of that period; they do not establish present support for every current operating system or processor.
The shared guide also discusses Ethernet, an embedded web server and network installation. Those sections expressly belong to P1500 network models. They do not turn the P1005 into a network printer. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held job release are unconfirmed here, and a physical security-lock slot is not evidence of confidential job release.
One ordinary tray, with a special aid for short paper
The main input holds 150 sheets of 75-g/m² ordinary paper. Letter and Legal are explicitly named on the exact US technical page; A4 is separately named in the original supported-size table and fits the documented main-tray range. That establishes 150 ordinary sheets for each of those sizes.
Load the print side face up with the top toward the printer, then adjust the side and front guides. When replenishing paper, remove the old stack, straighten the combined sheets and reload it. A 150-sheet rating is not a promise for the same number of thick cards or envelopes.
The P1005 has the original short-media extender for stock shorter than 185mm. Take that tool from its storage location, attach it to the adjustable guide, support the short stock, then return the tool after the job. This is not the separate ten-sheet priority feed fitted to the P1006.
For supported envelopes, use laser-compatible stock, face up with the short edge leading and the flap on the left. Match the actual size and Envelope type in the driver. The original main-tray envelope limit is a stack-height limit, not the 150-sheet ordinary-paper count. Avoid damaged envelopes and unsuitable clasps, windows or adhesives.
Manual duplex is a two-stage routine
The printer does not reverse sheets automatically. In the original compatible driver, choose manual two-sided printing and the binding option, then print the first side. Keep the output stack's orientation, retain its blank sheets and reload it printed side down. Click Continue to produce side two.
That is practical for an occasional attended document. A recurring job that must finish both sides without intervention needs confirmed automatic-duplex hardware. The guide warns that available features vary with the installed driver and operating system.
The maker rates one-sided output up to 15 Letter pages per minute; the original comparison separately gives 14 A4. These are declarations, not measurements made for this review. Special-media modes can pause between pages. HP recommends 250–1,500 pages per month, distinct from the 5,000-page maximum duty rating.
Replacement toner and desk space
The 35A CB435A black replacement is declared at approximately 1,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. The current HP compatibility list maps the exact US P1005. This replacement figure does not establish the yield or remaining toner of the cartridge supplied with an older machine. The neighboring P1500's 2,000-page supply declaration is not substituted.
The current exact maker body figures are 13.66 inches wide, 8.82 deep and 7.64 high. The original manual labels its different early dimensions as preliminary and directs readers to current support. Even the smaller closed body needs additional space for paper support, output and cartridge access; verify the real operating footprint, especially with Legal loaded. A strict weight limit remains unconfirmed because the published cartridge basis differs.
Choose the P1005 when direct USB monochrome printing and an attended paper routine fit the job. Scanning, shared onboard networking or automatic duplex require a different, specifically documented configuration.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker maximum 15 one-sided Letter ppm; original comparison separately 14 A4. Recommended monthly range 250–1,500 pages differs from 5,000 maximum duty. Special-media modes pause and slow; no measured output, quality, noise or automatic-duplex speed claim.
Paper handling
Included 150-sheet main input at 75-g/m² ordinary paper; exact US Letter/Legal and original A4 support plus the documented main-tray range establish 150 by each size. No P1006-only ten-sheet priority feed. Short Media Extender specifically covers P1005 stock shorter than 185 mm. Load top toward printer and print face up; adjust side/front guides. Supported envelopes use the main tray, face up with short edge leading and flap left, actual driver size and Envelope type, maximum 15 mm stack rather than 150 ordinary sheets. Only driver-assisted manual two-sided printing.
Scanning arrangement
Documented monochrome computer printer with no scanner, document feeder, flatbed, standalone copy or fax hardware. Color scanning is not inferred from a generic printer-support software list.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact maker specifies host-based printing through Hi-Speed USB 2.0 only, no wireless capability, network readiness or optional connection. Actual compatible computer driver and separately purchased USB cable required; original installation says connect only when prompted. Network and embedded-server instructions in the shared manual apply only to P1500 network models. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held release remain unconfirmed; a cable-lock receptacle is not a PIN feature.
Supplies and declared yields
US 35A CB435A black replacement approximately 1,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, corroborated by original printed45 and current HP exact cartridge compatibility for P1005 CB410A#ABA and P1006 CB411A#ABA. Introductory supplied-cartridge yield is not established here; do not substitute P1500 2,000-page supplies. Actual yield and remaining toner vary; no current cost per page.
Software and support
Original driver-assisted manual duplex requires selecting Print On Both Sides (Manually) and the binding option, printing side one, keeping the output stack orientation and blank sheets, reloading printed side down, then clicking Continue. Additional panel Go instruction belongs only to P1500. Features differ by driver/OS; historical Windows/Mac listings are not guarantees for a current computer. Ordinary single-sided and envelope routines are separate jobs.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US model identity plus current exact maker low-voltage 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V 50-Hz regional edition is not a universal-voltage promise. Original preliminary power/body values explicitly defer to current support figures, which control closed body dimensions here: 13.66×8.82×7.64 inches. Original preliminary paper-open depth varies with size and exceeds current generic maximum; allow tray/output/cartridge access and verify actual operating clearance. Current 10.3-lb weight has no cartridge basis and old preliminary with/without values differ, so strict weight remains unknown.
