LaserJet P1006Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible USB computer printing modest monochrome batches while keeping a small separate feed for special media.

The main tradeoff

No included Ethernet, wireless connection, scanner or automatic duplex. The USB cable is separate, and supported computer software must be verified for this discontinued model.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an earlier P1006 handle ordinary monochrome Legal documents over USB with 160 included sheets and a 1,500-page monthly recommendation?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible computer driver. Both included feeds support Legal: 150 main sheets plus ten in the genuine priority feed.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can those USB Letter documents finish both sides automatically?

Fails automatic print duplex. The documented routine requires moving and reloading the first-side stack, then continuing the second side in the computer driver.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can the P1006 itself join the office Wi-Fi network for printing?

Fails included Wi-Fi. The exact maker interface is USB only, and the shared guide limits onboard networking to other P1500 network models.

The extra feed is the reason to distinguish this small laser

The HP LaserJet P1006 is an earlier monochrome USB printer with a useful second paper path: a ten-sheet priority feed above its 150-sheet main tray. That is a real small stack feed, not a single-sheet manual slot. The deciding limits are host-based computer printing, manual two-sided output and no included wireless or Ethernet interface.

HP's exact US product listing identifies CB411A#ABA and explicitly says discontinued. This assessment concerns the documented 110–127-volt, 60-Hz configuration. A separate 220–240-volt, 50-Hz edition appears in the technical specifications; the original manual warns that regional power requirements must not be converted. Verify the label of any actual older machine.

This is a print-only device. It does not acquire a scanner, copier or fax because a modern generic support page offers software with those words in its name.

USB requires the right computer software

The exact maker specifications name Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and host-based printing. They explicitly say no wireless capability, no optional connection and no network readiness. The original manual's network-installation and embedded-web-server instructions are restricted to P1500 network models, rather than this P1006.

Use an actually compatible printer driver and provide the USB cable separately. The historical installation routine starts the installer and connects the cable when prompted. Its old Windows and Mac compatibility lists are not a guarantee for every present computer. A suitable connector alone does not establish software support.

No AirPrint, Mopria or PIN-held release workflow is established by the sources read here. The documented security-lock receptacle protects physical equipment; it does not hold a confidential document pending a code. The original P1006 controls do include a Cancel button, which the manual distinguishes from lower P1000 configurations.

160 ordinary sheets, or a dedicated special-media job

The main tray holds 150 sheets of ordinary 75-g/m² paper, and the priority feed can hold ten sheets. Letter, Legal and A4 have positive original size support and fit the exact maker ranges for both feeds. Loaded with ordinary paper of the chosen size, the included arrangement therefore provides 160 sheets.

The small path is more useful as a separate special-media feed when the main tray holds everyday stock. For a single supported envelope, the original guide selects the priority slot, with a capacity of one envelope. That envelope job does not retain a full ten-sheet plain-paper stack in the same slot.

Use laser-compatible envelopes face up with the short edge leading and the flap on the left. Match the real size and Envelope media type in the compatible driver. Multiple envelopes can use the main tray subject to its original stack-height limit. The ordinary 150-sheet capacity is not an envelope count.

For normal paper, load the intended print side face up with its top toward the printer and adjust the guides. Remove and straighten the stack before adding more. The short-media extender discussed elsewhere in the shared book is specifically for P1005 and related lower models; it is not an extra P1006 tray.

Two-sided output still needs an attended reload

HP describes driver-assisted manual duplex, not an automatic reversing mechanism. Select manual two-sided printing and the desired binding in the original driver, then print side one. Keep the output stack's orientation and blank sheets, reload it printed side down and click Continue for side two.

The guide adds a separate Go-button instruction for P1500 models only. Follow the actual P1006 driver prompts instead of transferring that control routine. A short attended document can fit this process; repeated batches that must complete both sides unattended need confirmed automatic-duplex hardware.

The maker's one-sided Letter maximum is 17 pages per minute, corroborated by the exact original model entry. Its A4 figure in the early manual is anomalous and is not used as a dependable comparison here. Special-media modes can slow the job. The recommended monthly range is 250–1,500 pages, separate from a 5,000-page maximum duty rating.

Check consumables and the working footprint

The exact US cartridge mapping lists 35A CB435A black toner. Its replacement declaration is approximately 1,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, separately corroborated in the original manual. That does not establish the supplied cartridge's introductory yield or remaining toner. A neighboring P1500 supply's 2,000-page declaration is not interchangeable.

Current exact body dimensions are 13.66 inches wide, 8.82 deep and 7.64 high. The original series dimensions are explicitly preliminary and defer to current support, but their paper-open illustrations also show why a closed depth is insufficient for planning. Allow space for extended paper support, output and cartridge removal. Published weight bases differ, so a strict weight requirement remains unconfirmed.

The P1006 fits a prepared USB document workstation where its priority feed has practical value. Built-in network sharing, document capture and unattended duplex call for different verified hardware.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 17 one-sided Letter ppm, corroborated by the exact original P1006 entry. Original A4 figure anomalous and not adopted; no inferred conversion or automatic-duplex speed. Recommended monthly range 250–1,500 pages differs from 5,000 maximum duty. Special-media modes pause and slow.

Paper handling

Included 150-sheet main input at 75-g/m² ordinary paper plus genuine ten-sheet priority feed. Original Letter/Legal/A4 support and exact maker ranges in both feeds establish 160 ordinary sheets of each size. A priority-slot envelope job holds one envelope instead of the ten-sheet ordinary stack; multiple envelopes use the main feed, maximum 15 mm stack. Laser-compatible envelopes face up, short edge leading and flap left, with matched driver size and Envelope type. Only manual duplex; lower P1005 short-media extender is not an extra P1006 feed.

Scanning arrangement

Documented monochrome computer printer with no scanner, document feeder, flatbed, standalone copy or fax hardware. Color scanning is not inferred from a generic printer-support software list.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact maker specifies host-based printing through Hi-Speed USB 2.0 only, no wireless capability, network readiness or optional connection. Actual compatible computer driver and separately purchased USB cable required; original installation says connect only when prompted. Network and embedded-server instructions in the shared manual apply only to P1500 network models. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held release remain unconfirmed; a cable-lock receptacle is not a PIN feature.

Supplies and declared yields

US 35A CB435A black replacement approximately 1,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, corroborated by original printed45 and current HP exact cartridge compatibility for P1005 CB410A#ABA and P1006 CB411A#ABA. Introductory supplied-cartridge yield is not established here; do not substitute P1500 2,000-page supplies. Actual yield and remaining toner vary; no current cost per page.

Software and support

Original driver-assisted manual duplex requires selecting Print On Both Sides (Manually) and the binding option, printing side one, keeping the output stack orientation and blank sheets, reloading printed side down, then clicking Continue. Additional panel Go instruction belongs only to P1500. Features differ by driver/OS; historical Windows/Mac listings are not guarantees for a current computer. Ordinary single-sided and envelope routines are separate jobs.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US model identity plus current exact maker low-voltage 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V 50-Hz regional edition is not a universal-voltage promise. Original preliminary power/body values explicitly defer to current support figures, which control closed body dimensions here: 13.66×8.82×7.64 inches. Original preliminary paper-open depth varies with size and exceeds current generic maximum; allow tray/output/cartridge access and verify actual operating clearance. Current 10.3-lb weight has no cartridge basis and old preliminary with/without values differ, so strict weight remains unknown.
