LaserJet P2055dIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A prepared monochrome USB workstation needing an unattended supported duplex routine and modest office batches.

The main tradeoff

The dn model’s network interface and optional 500-sheet feeder are excluded. No scanner; mobile protocols and PIN-held release remain unconfirmed. Correct rear width-lever and driver setup matter.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an earlier P2055d automatically duplex ordinary Legal pages over USB with 300 included sheets and a 3,000-page monthly recommendation?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, a compatible computer driver and the rear width lever set for Legal. Original paper checks confirm Legal in both feeds and the duplexer.

Does the d configuration include the dn model’s wired network interface?

Fails an included Ethernet requirement. The exact original model comparison adds Gigabit networking only in the separate P2055dn column; external print servers are accessories.

Automatic duplex for a direct computer workstation

The HP LaserJet P2055d is an earlier monochrome print-only laser with automatic two-sided printing and 300 included ordinary input sheets. It suits a prepared USB computer producing office documents. Its important limit is the absence of the P2055dn's onboard Ethernet interface; external networking and wireless accessories are separate configurations.

The exact US maker listing identifies CE457A#ABA and explicitly says discontinued. This review covers the documented low-voltage 110–127-volt, 60-Hz edition. HP lists a separate 220–240-volt, 50-Hz option, and the original manual warns against converting operating voltages. Check the actual unit's electrical rating.

This is a document printer without a scanner, flatbed, feeder, standalone copier or fax. An erroneous telephone-port entry in an older selection guide does not override the original interface diagram.

The d suffix adds duplex, while dn adds the network

The original exact-model comparison maps CE457A to the P2055d and adds the duplex mechanism to the base P2055 features. It then separately maps CE459A to the P2055dn, adding Gigabit Ethernet and more included memory. Those are separate product columns, not interchangeable descriptions.

The P2055d's documented normal connection is Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to a compatible computer. The original guide specifies an A-to-B cable no longer than two metres. Provide the appropriate cable and install a driver actually supported by the intended operating system.

The historical manual lists several Windows and Mac printer drivers; that is not a guarantee for every current computer. Nor does an optional external print server establish that a particular older machine includes one. AirPrint, Mopria and PIN-held document release are unconfirmed. Network administrator passwords and a cable-lock slot serve different purposes.

Choose the correct width before automatic duplex

The original paper table positively checks Letter, Legal and A4 for both included feeds and the duplexer. Both the Windows and Mac instructions describe the actual paper-width control: open the rear duplex-access area and push the blue lever in for Letter or Legal, or pull it out for A4.

Then select the compatible driver's two-sided option and the appropriate binding edge. The original Windows Finishing routine distinguishes the flip-up choice for top binding; the Mac Layout routine offers long-edge or short-edge binding. The hardware can reverse the paper, so an ordinary supported document does not require manually reloading its first-side stack.

Load preprinted stock in tray 1 face up with its top edge leading into the printer. Tray 2 loads face down with its top at the front. The original orientation table applies those positions to both simplex and duplex on this model. A supported ordinary duplex routine does not imply duplex envelopes or every heavy stock.

300 sheets are included; 800 requires another paper unit

The multipurpose tray holds 50 sheets and the main cassette 250, rated using 75-g/m² ordinary paper. The original Letter, Legal and A4 checks in both feeds establish 300 included sheets for each selected size. Adjust the cassette's side and rear guides to the real paper and straighten the stack before replenishing it.

The separate CE464A 500-sheet feeder can expand the arrangement to 800, but it is not included in this d configuration. Neither an expandable-capacity headline nor the larger x model's pictured base is a reason to count that accessory as standard.

Envelopes use tray 1 only, up to ten supported envelopes. Load the front face up with the short postage edge leading, and match the actual size and type in the driver. The rear straight-through output is a separate special-media path needing additional access. The ordinary cassette is not an envelope feed.

Separate workload, toner and usable space

The original maker maximum is 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 33 A4. Quiet mode explicitly slows printing. These figures are not measurements made here or a guarantee of duplex throughput. HP recommends 750–3,000 pages per month, distinct from the 50,000-page maximum duty rating in its US selection guide.

The 05A CE505A replacement is declared at approximately 2,300 black pages, and 05X CE505X at approximately 6,500. Both current HP cartridge pages explicitly map this exact US model and use ISO/IEC 19752. Do not transfer a neighboring P2035 high-yield restriction to the positively listed P2055d. Remaining toner in an older machine is unknown, and no live cost per page is calculated.

The original exact d-model body row gives 14.2 inches wide, 14.5 deep, 10.6 high and a 23.4lb product weight. Its fully opened depth is larger, and paper access, cables and cartridge removal require working room. The optional feeder changes the footprint and lifting arrangement.

Choose the P2055d for compatible USB monochrome work that benefits from automatic duplex. Included wired sharing needs the independently identified dn model; document capture or confirmed mobile printing needs separately documented support.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker original comparison declares up to 35 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 33 A4. Exact model recommended monthly range 750–3,000 pages is separate from the US selection guide’s 50,000 maximum duty. Quiet mode reduces speed. No independently measured speed/quality/noise or automatic-duplex throughput inferred.

Paper handling

Included 50-sheet tray 1 plus 250-sheet tray 2 at 75-g/m² ordinary paper, total 300. Personally viewed original Letter/Legal/A4 checkmarks in both feeds and duplexer; these sizes support ordinary included capacity and automatic duplex. Optional 500-sheet CE464A tray excluded; 800 expanded capacity is not included. Automatic duplex needs the rear blue width lever pushed in for Letter/Legal, pulled out for A4 and the correct compatible driver option. Tray 1 loads face up/top leading, tray 2 face down/top at front, for both simplex and duplex. Envelopes only tray 1, up to ten, face up/short postage edge leading, actual driver size/type; not automatic duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Actual monochrome print-only original architecture and black cartridge, no scanner, feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. The US selection guide’s RJ11 telephone-port entry is an error contradicted by actual original interface diagram and functions; not adopted.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact US P2055d CE457A#ABA includes Hi-Speed USB 2.0 computer printing and automatic Letter/Legal/A4 duplex. No included P2055dn Gigabit interface or optional external/wireless server. Original maximum USB cable length two metres; compatible installed driver and correct cable required. Mobile protocols and PIN release unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

US 05A CE505A replacement approximately 2,300 black pages; 05X CE505X approximately 6,500. Current exact HP cartridge pages positively map P2055d CE457A#ABA and P2055dn CE459A#ABA and declare ISO/IEC 19752. Original ordering table identifies both, and original configured print-cartridge rating is 2,300; do not assume a used machine has that remaining amount. No current price per page or generic P2035-only restriction imposed on P2055 high-yield support.

Software and support

Use an actually compatible computer printer driver. Original Windows Finishing supports Print on both sides with binding control; original Mac Layout offers long-edge/short-edge Two-Sided. Historical OS/driver lists do not promise current computer compatibility. Network administrator password, embedded-server authorization and cable security lock do not establish PIN-held job release. AirPrint/Mopria unconfirmed; Bonjour/mDNS discovery alone is not AirPrint. Additional optional external servers and wireless upgrades excluded.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact discontinued US model identity plus positively documented 110–127-V 60-Hz configuration. Separate regional 220–240-V 50-Hz edition is not universal voltage; original manual warns not to convert voltage. Original exact d/dn body rows: width 14.2, depth 14.5, height 10.6 inches, product weight 23.4 lb. Fully opened table gives 17.9-inch depth; allow actual tray, rear-output, cable, cartridge and service access beyond the closed body. Expanded x-model/additional-tray height and weight are excluded. Original output count of 125 versus the current 150 is unresolved; no numeric output-capacity guarantee.
