P3005Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A local USB computer printing black documents with 600 included plain-paper sheets.

The main tradeoff

The base model lacks embedded Ethernet and automatic duplex; it is an earlier print-only unit.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier USB monochrome model hold 600 Letter sheets for 3,000 pages per month?

Qualifies when earlier references are enabled: both included trays support Letter, with a 600-sheet total, and 3,000 lies below the recommended 5,000-page maximum.

Can it automatically print both sides of Legal paper?

Fails. Legal paper is supported, but this base configuration has no automatic duplex accessory; manual reloading is a different routine.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can I connect the standard printer directly to wired Ethernet?

Fails. The original base-model interfaces are USB and parallel; embedded Ethernet belongs to the n, dn and x configurations.

The HP LaserJet P3005 base model is an earlier monochrome printer for a computer that can use a direct USB connection. Its useful combination is a 35-page-per-minute Letter engine and 600 sheets of included plain-paper input. The deciding limitation is the base configuration: it has neither the built-in Ethernet of the P3005n nor the automatic duplex hardware of the P3005d. Those letters identify different equipment.

HP’s US page identifies this version as Q7812A#ABA and marks it discontinued. That makes it a reference for an existing installation or a carefully checked older purchase, rather than a current-stock recommendation. This is source-based analysis; it does not claim a new speed, reliability or print-quality test.

A local document printer with a defined job

The P3005 prints black documents. It cannot scan an original, make a standalone copy or send a fax: the original hardware description has no scanner or document feeder. If an office currently scans through another device, that can remain a separate workflow, but it does not make this printer an all-in-one.

HP declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 33 A4 pages per minute. These are different paper-specific ratings, not a guarantee that a short job emerges at either sustained rate. File processing, the driver and the chosen print settings still matter. FastRes 1200 and ProRes 1200 also have different descriptions in the guide; a quality-mode name should not be treated as a fresh measured image-quality result.

USB and legacy parallel require computer planning

The base model includes a USB 2.0 device connection and a parallel interface. USB is the supported ordinary connection represented in this finder. The parallel port may matter to an established legacy system, but it does not provide Ethernet or a wireless network. A separate print server or an old wireless accessory is an additional arrangement whose compatibility needs its own checking.

The original software list belongs to the Windows 2000/XP and early Mac OS X era, with some platforms receiving driver-only support. Check the exact present computer, operating system and driver before committing to this unit. An old Bonjour reference elsewhere in the family documentation is not evidence of AirPrint or Mopria support, and this review does not promise either mobile protocol.

600 sheets does not mean automatic two-sided printing

The standard configuration has a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and a 500-sheet Tray 2. The original media table confirms Letter, Legal and A4 in both included trays. On suitable plain paper, those two capacities support a 600-sheet total for each of those sizes. That is a total across the trays, not a 600-sheet single cassette or a promise for every thick stock.

The base P3005 lacks the automatic duplex accessory supplied on the d and dn versions. The guide describes manual two-sided work that requires reinserting pages, which is a different routine from selecting automatic duplex and leaving the job unattended. If two-sided packets are frequent, choosing a verified duplex configuration is more sensible than repeatedly handling the stack yourself.

For envelopes, HP instructs users to use Tray 1 and the rear output path with suitable laser-compatible media. Tray 1 holds up to ten envelopes under the stated conditions. Check seams, flatness and heat suitability, and do not print an envelope a second time. Envelope support is not permission to run envelopes through automatic duplex.

Workload, supplies and the older unit itself

HP’s recommended volume is 1,500–5,000 pages per month. The separate maximum monthly duty figure is up to 100,000 Letter pages. The larger number is not a recommendation to run that volume every month; the finder uses the recommended maximum when assessing a monthly workload.

The guide identifies replacement Q7551A and Q7551X cartridges with approximate declared yields of 6,500 and 13,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Actual yield depends on use. These figures do not establish the cartridge remaining in an older printer, an included-cartridge yield, a current supply price or a cost per page. Request the configuration and supplies-status pages when inspecting a specific unit.

Check that the actual rating label matches the US 110–127V edition. The guide separately describes 220–240V units and warns against voltage conversion. Also measure the intended location with cables attached, paper trays accessible and the rear output usable; the space filters here do not claim a verified body measurement for this record.

Choose the base P3005 when direct-computer monochrome printing is sufficient and the exact unit’s software, paper path and supplies check out. Choose a verified P3005d for local automatic duplex, or a P3005dn when both wired networking and automatic duplex are essential. None of those substitutions adds scanning.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

HP declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 33 A4 pages per minute. These are maker maxima, not measured results or automatic-duplex rates.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 500-sheet Tray 2 support Letter, Legal and A4 plain paper. The optional third 500-sheet tray is excluded. Use Tray 1 and the rear output for up to 10 suitable envelopes; envelopes are not an automatic-duplex job.

Scanning arrangement

The original printer configuration and complete hardware walkaround describe a print-only engine, without a scanner, copier, ADF or fax assembly.

Computer and mobile connections

USB 2.0 and legacy parallel are standard. The base model table excludes embedded Jetdirect Ethernet; wireless requires a separately checked accessory.

Supplies and declared yields

The guide identifies replacement Q7551A at approximately 6,500 pages and Q7551X at approximately 13,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. These are declared replacement yields, not a verified supplied-cartridge yield or a price-per-page calculation.

Software and support

The original guide lists Windows 2000/XP-era drivers, Mac OS X 10.2 and later within that historical edition, and some driver-only platforms. Confirm an exact current driver for the intended computer; the old list is not a promise of modern compatibility.

Electrical edition and setup

This assessment is the exact US #ABA package and the guide’s 110–127V regional unit. Inspect the actual rating label before powering an earlier unit; the 220–240V edition is separate and must not be converted by selecting a menu option.
