Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Wi-Fi monochrome desktop printing combine automatic duplex, 250 standard sheets and a 2,000-page monthly workload when paper size is flexible?
Qualifies with a compatible configured desktop setup. Automatic duplex hardware is documented; its exact size subset remains unknown, and the app/account requirements still apply.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan color originals to a computer over Ethernet?
Fails. This is a monochrome print-only machine without any physical scanner or document feeder. App scan promotion does not change its hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →Does Wi-Fi Direct AirPrint also establish included PIN release?
Fails that combined requirement. Direct AirPrint is documented, but an included PIN job-release arrangement is not established by the read operating material.
Explore this need in the finder →A small-team printer with one shared paper supply
The HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw suits a small team that prints black documents and wants a choice of computer USB, Ethernet or ordinary Wi-Fi. Automatic two-sided printing is included, and its recommended monthly workload is 350–2,500 pages. The useful question is whether a single 250-sheet main tray can support the team's actual mix of reports, correspondence and occasional envelopes.
This review covers non-e US 3G650F#BGJ. It should not inherit the permanent HP+ conditions of the similarly named 3001dwe. That distinction does not eliminate every software condition: the documented HP setup includes app, account and pairing steps, and the current app footnotes specify Internet access and an account for full functionality. Check the software route you plan to use before assuming a completely independent setup.
It is print only. There is no scanner, copier, original feeder or analog fax. Generic app references to scanning and cloud services describe software capabilities across products, rather than a scanner hidden inside this printer.
Paper changes happen in the main tray
The exact US specification gives one main tray for up to 250 ordinary sheets or ten envelopes, and lists Letter, Legal and A4. The read material does not establish the paper-weight basis for that sheet count, so it is not presented as a guarantee for heavy stock. The output tray's separate 150-sheet figure is not additional input capacity.
Extend the main tray for Legal or longer paper, move the guides to the appropriate markings and load sheets in portrait orientation with the print side up. Straighten the stack, avoid fanning it and keep it below the height indicator. The guide warns against mixing sizes or adding and removing paper while printing. Match the application's size and type settings to what is physically loaded.
Envelopes use the same input, face up in portrait orientation, and labels require removing the other paper first. This makes occasional mailing practical, but someone must change the tray's contents. A team expecting permanently loaded letterhead, plain paper and envelopes should assess that interruption rather than relying on the headline sheet count.
Automatic duplex is positively documented. The exact supported duplex-size subset is not established in the sections read, so the finder can acknowledge that capability with paper size left flexible but does not promise a specific two-sided format. HP's normal US rate is up to 35 Letter pages per minute; a promotional phrase calling that a duplex speed is not treated as a separate measured duplex result.
Choose the network arrangement before adding devices
Infrastructure Wi-Fi supports 2.4- and 5-GHz operation. Ethernet is a separate wired choice, and connecting its cable disables the infrastructure Wi-Fi connection in the original instructions. Computer USB uses the rear device port and a separately purchased cable. Do not interpret Bluetooth setup references as an independent Bluetooth print connection.
For ordinary network setup, the HP software finds the printer, applies the network arrangement and presents its pairing and account steps. A suitable WPS router offers another documented wireless setup method. Follow the actual prompts for the current operating system instead of assuming the older guide's screen names remain identical.
AirPrint and Mopria are listed for supported mobile printing. Wi-Fi Direct is also a genuine documented peer arrangement: enable it, obtain the printer's Direct name and password from its information pages, and use a compatible device. The guide explicitly includes AirPrint on this route. Direct printing does not automatically gain desktop duplex settings or a private-job release workflow.
Separate security advertising from a supported routine
The US page promotes a PIN/pull option, but the read operating material does not establish an included job-storage and release arrangement. This assessment therefore leaves secure PIN printing unknown. An administrator password or wireless-setup PIN is not the same as holding a confidential document until its owner enters a job PIN.
The current supply policy is clearer: cartridges need a new or reused HP chip, and firmware updates may block non-HP-chip cartridges. Standard W1380A replacement toner is declared around 1,500 pages and W1380X around 4,000 under HP's ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing basis, with actual yield varying. A cartridge is preinstalled, but its supplied yield is not established here. Optional subscription promotions should be evaluated separately from the hardware.
The US body measures about 14.4 by 15.7 by 8.6 inches and weighs 16.1 pounds; allow greater depth for opening and Legal paper. Inspect the electrical plate because the documents list separate regional supplies. The 50,000-page maximum duty figure does not replace the recommended workload. Choose this model when its single-tray monochrome routine fits; choose a documented multifunction or larger-input configuration when paper changes or separate scanning would dominate the day.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact US normal black rate up to 35 Letter ppm; promotional text calling this a duplex speed is not used as an independently established duplex measurement. Recommended monthly 350–2,500 is separate from maximum 50,000 duty. No hands-on result or inferred A4 rate.
Paper handling
One supplied main input holds up to 250 ordinary sheets or ten envelopes; the ordinary capacity weight basis is not established in the read source. Exact Letter/Legal/A4 support is positive, with Legal requiring tray extension. Automatic duplex is included, but its exact paper-size subset remains unknown. Envelopes and labels use this same tray after removing other paper; output 150 is separate and no extra tray is included.
Scanning arrangement
Monochrome print-only hardware. No scanner, copier, original feeder or fax; generic app scanning/cloud wording cannot add physical capture or analog fax.
Computer and mobile connections
Included device USB, 10/100 Ethernet and 2.4/5-GHz Wi-Fi. Plugging in Ethernet disables infrastructure Wi-Fi in the original setup instructions. Genuine Wi-Fi Direct is documented for compatible mobile/computer printing, with AirPrint explicitly supported on that peer arrangement. Bluetooth setup references do not establish an independent print connection.
Supplies and declared yields
Preinstalled original black toner is documented, with supplied yield not established here. Replacement HP 138A W1380A about 1,500 pages and HP 138X W1380X about 4,000, maker ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing declaration and variable actual yield. Exact current dynamic-security policy requires a new or reused HP chip and warns updates can block non-HP-chip cartridges; this is distinct from HP+ and optional Instant Ink promotions.
Software and support
Actual HP software setup includes app download, pairing/portal and HP account steps; current app footnotes require Internet and an account for full functionality and reserve possible charges. No HP+ lifetime account/Internet/original-toner conditions are borrowed from 3001dwe. PIN/pull is promoted, but the read exact operating material does not establish an included job-release setup, so secure PIN remains unknown. Mobile plans do not borrow desktop duplex or media controls.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US non-e 3G650F#BGJ supported without an observed discontinuation notice or stock/price promise. Separate 110–127-V and 220–240-V editions are documented, not a universal supply; actual electrical plate unconfirmed. US body 14.4 × 15.7 × 8.6 inches, 16.1 lb; original guide gives 14.45 × 15.68 × 8.51 and the same 16.1 lb with cartridges. Open approximately 29.9 inches deep and 14.4 high; allow service and Legal-tray space. USB/Ethernet cables are separately purchased.
