Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the standard 4001dw print monochrome Legal pages automatically on both sides over office Wi-Fi with 350 ordinary input sheets?
Yes, with earlier references enabled and the supported computer driver, stock and paper settings. Both included trays and Legal automatic duplex are positively documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Does USB computer printing include private PIN release without purchasing storage?
No. The rear host port needs a dedicated, separately purchased USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB. The port itself is not included storage.
Explore this need in the finder →Can office Wi-Fi also scan and copy Letter originals on this printer?
No. The dw adds wireless printing, not a scanner or copier. A phone-camera app cannot supply missing glass or feeder hardware.

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw suits a small workgroup that needs black-and-white documents over office Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a direct computer USB cable. It includes automatic two-sided printing and two ordinary paper inputs totaling 350 sheets. Its limitation is straightforward: this is a dedicated printer, so neither the HP app nor the wireless radio adds a scanner, copier or fax.
The exact US model is 2Z601F#BGJ, which HP's current reference explicitly marks discontinued. This assessment therefore appears with earlier models enabled. It covers the non-e dw configuration, without assigning the HP+ lifetime conditions of the separately named dwe. Actual software compatibility, supplies and the particular unit still need checking.
HP declares up to 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 40 ppm on A4. Its recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 pages. The 80,000-page maximum duty figure is a separate comparison limit rather than an everyday workload target or a measured result from us.
Choose the connection for the actual job
The original dw column positively includes the wireless print server, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct. The dn and n columns do not share those wireless features. For a computer on the office network, use the supported driver through Wi-Fi or Ethernet; the documented USB device interface supplies the direct computer route.
The exact US page and original guide disagree about the Ethernet speed wording, so this assessment promises the Ethernet route without choosing a rate from the conflicting listings. The maker's cable statements also differ between the box list and a separate cable field. Confirm the actual cable supplied rather than treating either line as a guaranteed package inventory.
AirPrint and Mopria are documented for local-network printing. The phone and printer need the supported network access; AirPrint's instructions specify the same subnet. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate peer connection: enable it through Setup, Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Direct Status, then select the printer's direct name. The original guide explicitly supports Apple AirPrint on this direct arrangement. Mobile jobs are not assumed to expose every full-driver paper, duplex or storage control.
350 sheets are included; 900 needs an accessory
Tray 1 holds 100 sheets and Tray 2 holds 250 on the original 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary-paper basis. The separately purchased 550-sheet feeder raises a deliberately upgraded setup to 900; it is not inside the assessed standard count. The 150-sheet output bin is another separate quantity.
HP's supported-paper table positively lists Letter, Legal and A4 in both included inputs and for automatic duplex. Match the size, type and two-sided setting in the compatible driver. Use the documented ordinary duplex stock range, rather than transferring the heavier multipurpose-tray limit into a two-sided promise.
For Legal or A4, Tray 2 extends behind the printer. Set the length and width guides to the actual markings without squeezing the stack, stay below the fill indicators and leave room for the rear extension. The closed body is not the entire operating footprint.
Envelopes and labels use Tray 1, not the main cassette. The original envelope routine accepts up to ten suitable envelopes, face up with the short postage end entering first. Select the actual envelope size, Envelope type and manual-feed source as directed by the compatible driver. Neither envelopes nor labels should be duplexed.
The PIN headline has a storage prerequisite
The rear host USB port is different from the computer's USB device connection. Private job storage requires a separately purchased, dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB. Setup formats that drive, and removing it disables job storage. The base package consequently fails an included-PIN requirement despite the marketing security headline.
With that deliberate upgrade, enable the Job Storage controls, choose Personal Job and assign the PIN. At the two-line panel, open Job Storage, select the folder and job, then enter the required PIN to release it. Confirm the actual driver supports the procedure; HP specifies Universal Print Driver 5.9.0 or newer when using that driver family.
Confirm regional power and replacement supplies
HP lists 148A W1480A at approximately 2,900 pages or 148X W1480X at approximately 9,500, under continuous-printing ISO/IEC 19752 conditions. These are replacement yields, not remaining toner. Dynamic security checks for a new or reused HP chip. Separate 110–127 V and 220–240 V electrical editions are documented rather than universal voltage; verify the actual plate. Choose the 4001dw for its documented monochrome network printing, and choose an actual MFP when original-document capture is essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker one-sided speed is up to 42 Letter ppm, separately 40 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly volume is 750–4,000 pages, distinct from the 80,000-page maximum duty figure. No measured speed or inferred duplex-sheet rate is claimed.
Paper handling
Included Tray 1 holds 100 and Tray 2 holds 250 ordinary sheets on the 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. The 550-sheet feeder is optional; 900 is an upgraded total, not included capacity. Output 150 is separate. Letter, Legal and A4 are positively listed in both included inputs and automatic duplex; supported ordinary duplex stock is 60–120 g/m². Tray 2 extends behind the printer for Legal or A4. Use marked guides and fill limits. Envelopes and labels use Tray 1 only, never duplex; up to ten envelopes, face up, short postage end first.
Scanning arrangement
Dedicated monochrome print-only hardware. No scanner, glass, document feeder, copier or fax is established; phone-camera functions in the app do not create printer capture hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact dw column positively includes USB device printing, Ethernet, wireless print server, BLE and standard Wi-Fi Direct. US page says Ethernet 10/100 while original guide and North American sheet say 10/100/1000; Ethernet is supported without a rate promise. BLE is not invented as a separate full print connection. AirPrint and Mopria use supported local networking; AirPrint requires the same subnet. Original guide also explicitly supports AirPrint through Wi-Fi Direct. Mobile plans do not borrow desktop paper, duplex, PIN or capacity settings.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact US replacements are 148A W1480A around 2,900 pages and 148X W1480X around 9,500 under continuous-printing ISO/IEC 19752. W1020XC around 10,000 is separately listed as a contract cartridge. No included yield, remaining toner, price or current cost per page is inferred. Dynamic security requires a new or reused HP chip; Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection are separate administrator functions.
Software and support
Private job storage requires a separately purchased, dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB in the rear host port. Setup formats it; removing it disables storage. Base secure PIN is false. With the upgrade, use supported Job Storage/Personal Job controls and PIN release through the folder/job at the two-line panel. UPD version 5.9.0 or newer is required when using UPD. Optional licensed management is separate. Non-e dw does not inherit HP+ lifetime requirements from dwe.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US 2Z601F#BGJ reference explicitly discontinued. Both 110–127 V and 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz electrical editions are listed without an independently established option-to-voltage map; not dual voltage, check the plate. Exact US body is 15 × 14.06 × 8.5 inches and 18.87 lb, weight basis unspecified. Newer guide gives 19.6 lb with cartridges and 30.8-inch open depth versus US 25 inches; leave actual rear-extension, tray, toner and cable clearance. Box cable list and separate cable-included field conflict; verify supplied cable. Guide memory 512 MB versus older exact sheet 256 MB is preserved without upgrade inference.
