LaserJet Pro 4001dwe (2Z601E#BGJ; HP+ US reference)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A small office accepting the documented HP+ conditions and printing a recommended 750–4,000 black pages monthly.

The main tradeoff

HP+ conditions remain after cancelling an optional Instant Ink plan. PIN release needs extra USB storage; exact duplex paper sizes and the actual electrical plate remain unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can configured Wi-Fi monochrome desktop printing combine automatic duplex, 350 ordinary sheets and a 3,000-page monthly workload with paper size flexible?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the lifetime HP+ account, Internet and Original HP Toner conditions accepted. Exact duplex paper sizes remain unconfirmed here.

Can USB printing provide PIN release from the supplied configuration alone?

Fails. Private job storage requires a separate dedicated USB 2.0 drive of at least 16 GB plus initialization and compatible driver configuration; USB printing also retains HP+ conditions.

Will Wi-Fi Direct AirPrint also scan originals into the computer?

Fails the combined need. The documented Direct AirPrint route prints, while this model has no physical scanner.

Start with the HP+ commitment

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dwe offers automatic two-sided monochrome printing, wired and wireless connections, and two supplied paper inputs. Its deciding condition appears before any speed comparison: this is an HP+ model. HP explicitly requires an HP account, an Internet connection and exclusive use of Original HP Toner for the life of the printer. A USB cable or Wi-Fi Direct job does not remove that commitment.

The exact US reference is 2Z601E#BGJ, which HP marks discontinued. This is an earlier configuration to assess with its setup conditions, software support and actual condition in mind. It is not a multifunction printer: there is no scanner, copier, document feeder or analog fax. Software names containing Print/Scan do not change that physical scope.

Instant Ink is a separate subscription arrangement. The page advertises an available introductory period, but enrollment, ongoing charges and cancellation have their own terms. HP says that cancelling the plan allows a return to ordinary Original HP standard or XL cartridges. That does not cancel the printer's permanent HP+ requirements. Evaluate the two commitments separately before choosing this suffix.

Ordinary reports and occasional special paper

The supplied paper inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet cassette, on the original guide's 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary-paper basis. Together they hold 350 sheets. An additional 550-sheet feeder is optional, so a 900-sheet maximum should not be read as the contents of a standard box.

Letter, A4 and Legal have supported feed arrangements. The main cassette extends at the back for A4 and Legal, which affects installation depth even before someone opens it for loading. Set the guides to the paper markings, keep the stack below the fill indicators and choose the same size and type in the application and driver. A thicker material does not retain the ordinary-sheet capacity.

Automatic duplex is a genuine included dwe feature, confirmed in its original model column. A compatible desktop driver exposes its two-sided control. The exact supported duplex-size subset is not established in the read material, so this assessment does not infer that every simplex size can automatically turn. Confirm a specific format and paper type before making it essential to a report routine.

Envelopes use the multipurpose tray, with up to ten documented; labels also belong there rather than the main cassette. These are separate loading routines. The 150-sheet output bin is not another source of input paper, and supported envelope printing is not permission to duplex an envelope.

Connections still share the same account conditions

The original dwe column includes computer USB, Ethernet, wireless connectivity and Wi-Fi Direct. The exact US page lists dual-band 2.4- and 5-GHz Wi-Fi. Bluetooth Low Energy belongs to its wireless/setup context, rather than establishing an independent Bluetooth printing method. Configure the chosen route through the documented software and Smart Admin onboarding process.

A compatible mobile device can use AirPrint or Mopria on an appropriate shared network. Genuine Wi-Fi Direct also supports a documented AirPrint peer-printing arrangement after Direct is enabled and its name is selected. These are assessed as their own routes; mobile printing does not automatically inherit the desktop driver's duplex settings, exact media capacity or private-job controls. The printer's HP+ Internet and account obligations still remain.

Private printing requires more than the rear port

The original operating instructions require a separately purchased, dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB for Job Storage. Install it in the rear host port, complete the formatting step and verify that the compatible driver exposes Job Storage. Formatting can erase the device, and removing it disables the feature.

With that additional setup, Personal Job can wait for a configured PIN before being released from the named folder and job at the printer. The base configuration is therefore not matched to a requirement for included PIN release. Network security settings and an administrator password serve other purposes; they do not replace the missing storage setup for a private print job.

Volume, supplies and the practical decision

HP rates output up to 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately from 40 ppm on A4. Its recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 pages. The 80,000-page maximum duty figure is not the workload to plan every month, and none of these declarations is a hands-on performance result.

A black Original HP cartridge is preinstalled, with supplied yield unconfirmed here. Replacement W1480A is declared around 2,900 pages and W1480X around 9,500 under HP's ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing basis; actual yield varies. The US body is about 15 by 14.06 by 8.5 inches, before allowing greater access for trays and service. Inspect the electrical plate because separate regional supplies are documented.

Keep this option for an office that accepts HP+ and its monochrome duplex routine. Prefer a documented non-e configuration when those permanent conditions do not fit, or a multifunction model when scanning is part of the daily job.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original exact dwe rate up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 40 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly range 750–4,000 pages, separate from maximum 80,000 duty. No measured duplex throughput or reliability claim.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2, original 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary-paper basis. Letter/Legal/A4 fit the supplied paths; main tray extends for Legal/A4. Optional extra 550-sheet tray is excluded from the 350 total. Included automatic duplex is positive, but exact duplex-size subset remains unconfirmed. Up to ten envelopes and labels use Tray 1. Output 150 is not input.

Scanning arrangement

Monochrome print-only hardware has no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. Print/Scan Doctor and app terminology do not add capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact original dwe supports computer USB, Ethernet, wireless connectivity and true Wi-Fi Direct; US lists dual-band 2.4/5-GHz Wi-Fi. BLE serves the documented wireless/setup context rather than an independent print route. HP+ account, Internet and lifetime Original HP Toner requirements apply to every route, including USB and peer printing.

Supplies and declared yields

Preinstalled Original HP black toner is documented, with supplied yield unknown here. Replacement HP 148A W1480A about 2,900 pages and 148X W1480X about 9,500, maker ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing declaration and variable actual yield. Original HP Toner lifetime requirement is explicit, not just a temporary subscription promotion. No live price or cost-per-page calculation.

Software and support

Permanent HP+ requires an HP account, Internet connection and exclusive Original HP Toner for the printer life. Setup/onboarding uses the Smart Admin Dashboard. Instant Ink is a separately enrolled subscription that can be changed/cancelled; cancellation permits ordinary Original HP standard/XL cartridges and does not cancel HP+. Private Job Storage needs a dedicated separately purchased USB 2.0 drive of at least 16 GB, initialization/formatting and compatible driver controls; removal disables it, so base PIN is false. Shared/mobile and Direct plans do not borrow desktop duplex settings.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US 2Z601E#BGJ explicitly discontinued. Two regional supplies, 110–127 V and 220–240 V at 50/60 Hz, are listed as not dual voltage; actual plate/option unconfirmed, so mains null. US body 15 × 14.06 × 8.5 inches and 18.13 lb with cartridge basis unstated; original guide specifies a different shared weight/greater open depth, so allow service and extended-tray space. USB cable inclusion conflicts between the box row and separate cable field; verify the actual package.
