LaserJet Pro 4001n (2Z599F#BGJ; US reference)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired office printing black documents at a recommended 750–4,000 pages monthly and accepting attended two-sided jobs.

The main tradeoff

The n lacks the dn/dw automatic duplexer and the dw radio. Its optional storage routine is outside the base configuration; check the electrical plate, driver and supply-chip compatibility.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can USB monochrome printing provide 350 ordinary Legal sheets and a recommended workload of 3,000 pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible desktop print driver. The main tray extends for Legal; automatic duplex and a 900-sheet expanded package are not included.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the supplied n automatically duplex Letter reports?

Fails. The exact n has no automatic duplexer. Its compatible-driver two-sided routine requires manual refeeding.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can confidential Ethernet jobs use PIN release without buying a storage drive?

Fails for the base configuration. The original procedure requires a separate dedicated USB 2.0 drive of at least 16 GB, initialization and compatible driver configuration.

Choose the n for a wired, one-sided routine

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001n is a monochrome print-only model for a small office that wants USB or Ethernet printing and can handle two-sided pages manually. Its useful included configuration is straightforward: two paper inputs, a compact closed body and a maker-rated 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute. It does not include the automatic duplexer found on dn and dw versions or the dw wireless radio.

The exact US reference assessed here is 2Z599F#BGJ. HP explicitly marks it discontinued, so this is an earlier-model assessment rather than a current-stock claim. It has no scanner, copier, document feeder or fax. App promotion that mentions scanning cannot turn this print-only machine into a multifunction printer.

350 sheets, with space for the tray to extend

The standard inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet cassette, on the original guide's ordinary 75-g/m², 20-lb paper basis. Letter, A4 and Legal are supported. Unlike some shorter cassettes, this main tray extends for A4 and Legal; allow space behind the printer when using those sizes. The optional 550-sheet accessory raises the maximum to 900 sheets, but it should not be counted in a base package.

Adjust the width and length guides to the paper markings, avoid squeezing the stack and keep it below the fill indicators. The application and driver should agree with the loaded size and type. A mixed-paper office can use the multipurpose input for a separate batch, but a thicker stock does not retain the ordinary-paper sheet count.

Manual duplex is an attended desktop routine. In a compatible Windows driver, choose the manual two-sided setting, print the first side, move the output stack to Tray 1 and follow the prompt to continue. Check the orientation with a small document first, especially for letterhead. Rated one-sided engine speed does not describe the time spent collecting, turning and reloading a report.

Envelopes and labels also use Tray 1, rather than the main cassette. The guide allows up to ten envelopes and requires the appropriate paper settings. The absence of a separate envelope feeder does not mean envelopes are unsupported; it means someone must load the ordinary multipurpose path for that job.

Network mobile printing is separate from wireless hardware

Connect one computer through USB or attach the printer to a suitable Ethernet network. The original n column explicitly excludes the wireless print server, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct. Neither the shared security settings list nor a wireless sibling's instructions establish an included radio on this model.

AirPrint and Mopria are nevertheless supported through an appropriate shared network. A phone can use the office access point while the printer uses Ethernet, provided both can communicate on the required subnet. That arrangement is different from printing directly to a printer-created wireless network. Mobile printing also does not acquire the desktop driver's manual-duplex and job-storage controls automatically.

PIN printing needs an additional storage setup

HP promotes a PIN/pull option, but the original operating procedure supplies the important prerequisite: install a dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB in the rear host port. The printer uses that device for stored jobs, initializes it as directed and disables Job Storage if it is removed. The process can erase the drive, so it should not contain files that need keeping.

After suitable storage and compatible driver controls are configured, Personal Job can wait for release at the printer. The user selects the folder and named job and supplies its PIN. That is a conditional extension to the supplied configuration, so this assessment does not match the base printer to a requirement for included PIN release. A rear host USB port alone is not the missing storage device.

Workload, supplies and checks before committing

The recommended monthly volume is 750–4,000 pages. The separate 80,000-page duty rating is a maximum comparison figure, not the workload to plan every month. HP distinguishes 42 ppm on Letter from 40 ppm on A4; neither is our measured result.

A black cartridge is preinstalled, but its included yield is not established here. Standard W1480A replacement toner is declared around 2,900 pages and W1480X around 9,500 under HP's ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing basis, with actual yield varying. The current exact policy also warns that non-HP-chip cartridges can be blocked by firmware. That policy should be checked separately from the lifetime requirements of HP+ e models, which are not borrowed into this non-e review.

The exact US page lists a 15 by 14.06 by 8.5-inch body at 18.12 pounds; the newer shared guide uses a different weight basis and larger opened depth. Allow operational clearance and inspect the electrical plate, since the listed regional supplies are not dual voltage. Keep this model for a workable wired monochrome routine; choose a documented duplex or multifunction configuration when refeeding or separate scanning would become a recurring inconvenience.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact n rated up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 40 A4 ppm; neither is a measured manual-duplex completion rate. Recommended monthly volume 750–4,000 pages is separate from maximum 80,000-page duty.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and 250-sheet Tray 2 on the original 75-g/m², 20-lb basis; Letter, Legal and A4 supported, including main-tray extension for Legal/A4. Optional 550-sheet Tray 3 raises the maximum to 900 but is excluded. Automatic duplex is explicitly unavailable on n; manual desktop refeeding uses Tray 1. Up to ten envelopes in Tray 1, with labels also restricted there. Output 150 is not input.

Scanning arrangement

Exact print-only monochrome configuration has no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. Generic HP app scanning promotion does not add physical capture hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet on exact n; no wireless print server, BLE or Wi-Fi Direct in the original n column. Rear host USB is for the documented separate-storage arrangement, not a radio or scanner. Shared-network mobile printing is possible through Ethernet with a suitable access point for the phone.

Supplies and declared yields

Original black toner is preinstalled; its supplied yield is not established here. Replacements HP 148A W1480A about 2,900 pages and 148X W1480X about 9,500; W1020XC about 10,000 is separately identified as a contract cartridge. Maker ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing basis, variable actual yield. Exact current policy requires a new or reused HP chip and warns firmware updates can block non-HP-chip cartridges; this is distinct from HP+.

Software and support

Private Job Storage requires a dedicated separately purchased USB 2.0 drive of at least 16 GB at the rear host port, compatible driver setup and initialization; formatting erases the drive and removal disables Job Storage. Base secure PIN is therefore false. No HP+ lifetime account/Internet/original-toner requirement is borrowed from an e suffix. Applicable setup/app requirements and current driver versions still need checking. Network AirPrint/Mopria do not inherit desktop storage or media controls.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US 2Z599F#BGJ explicitly discontinued. Source lists separate 110–127-V and 220–240-V regional supplies, not dual voltage; actual option/plate not independently established, so mains null. Exact n body 15 × 14.06 × 8.5 inches and 18.12 lb, cartridge basis unstated. Shared newer guide gives 19.6 lb with cartridges and 30.8-inch open depth versus US 25; preserve those conditions and allow tray/service clearance. USB cable is separately purchased.
