LaserJet Pro 4001ne (2Z599E#BGJ; US HP+ reference)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible connected office printing a recommended 750–4,000 pages monthly and accepting an HP account, Internet connection and lifetime Original HP Toner.

The main tradeoff

No automatic duplex or included wireless radio. USB does not remove HP+ Internet requirements; private-job storage and the 550-sheet feeder are separate purchases.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet monochrome Legal printing provide 350 included ordinary sheets for 3,000 pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible desktop software and the required HP+ account, Internet and lifetime Original HP Toner arrangement. Duplex is manual.

Does this exact ne configuration include automatic duplex for Letter printing?

Fails. The ne column explicitly lacks the automatic duplex mechanism; shared family marketing is not evidence that it is included.

A wired monochrome printer with permanent HP+ conditions

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001ne suits a small office that wants straightforward black-and-white printing and accepts the HP+ arrangement. Its included inputs total 350 ordinary sheets. The decisive restrictions are manual two-sided printing, no included wireless radio and a permanent requirement for an HP account, Internet connectivity and exclusive use of Original HP Toner.

The exact US product is 2Z599E#BGJ. HP now explicitly marks it discontinued, so this is an earlier-model reference rather than a current-stock offer. The e suffix matters: a nearby 4001n or 4001dn listing does not establish this model's account or supply policy.

HP's original comparison gives up to 42 Letter pages per minute, separately 40 ppm on A4. The exact support reference recommends 750–4,000 printed pages monthly; the 80,000-page maximum duty figure is a different limit. None of those numbers represents our own speed or endurance test.

Ethernet supports the normal connected-office arrangement

The original ne column confirms Ethernet and a computer USB interface. It explicitly excludes the wireless server, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi Direct available elsewhere in the family. A mobile device using the office's wireless access point does not mean the printer itself contains Wi-Fi.

For the clearest everyday setup, connect the printer by Ethernet to an Internet-connected network and complete HP's account and registration procedure. AirPrint and Mopria are documented for compatible devices on the appropriate shared network. Network discovery and firmware requirements still need checking against the actual office configuration.

The original guide also supports desktop USB printing. That physical connection does not cancel HP+ conditions: this ne still needs its separate Ethernet Internet arrangement, account and required toner. It should not be selected as a simple offline USB printer. Check the current driver package for the computer rather than relying on the guide's historical operating-system list.

The standard tray total includes Legal handling

A 100-sheet multipurpose tray and 250-sheet main cassette make the supplied 350-sheet total, rated on 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary paper. The exact size ranges and loading instructions establish Letter, A4 and Legal handling. A4 and Legal extend the main tray behind the printer, so the compact closed footprint is not the full working space.

Set the guides to the actual stock, keep below the fill indicators and choose matching paper size and type in the driver. Do not force guides tightly against the stack. The advertised 900-sheet maximum includes a separately purchased 550-sheet feeder; it is not the standard package. The 150-sheet output bin is also separate from blank-paper capacity.

Envelopes use Tray 1, up to ten, face up with the short postage end entering first. Select the envelope size, Envelope media type and manual-feed source. Labels also belong in Tray 1 rather than the main cassette. These specialty routines do not inherit the ordinary-sheet capacity.

Manual duplex and optional PIN storage are important limits

The model comparison explicitly marks automatic duplex unavailable on ne. For two-sided work, use the compatible driver's manual routine and refeed the stack as instructed. Someone must attend that process. A shared sales paragraph mentioning two-sided printing does not add the automatic mechanism included on dne or dwe configurations.

Private job retrieval is likewise conditional. The original procedure requires a dedicated USB 2.0 storage device of at least 16 GB in the rear host port; the exact US sales footnote also says it is a separate purchase. The printer formats that drive, and removing it disables job storage.

With the accessory installed and the appropriate driver enabled, Personal Job can wait for a PIN at the panel. That is useful functionality to investigate, but the assessed base package does not satisfy an included-PIN requirement. A general security feature name cannot replace the missing storage accessory.

Supplies and installation finish the decision

The original guide identifies 148A W1480A and 148X W1480X replacement black cartridges for 4001 models. The nearby 4002 uses a different regional cartridge family. Published trial-subscription wording is separate from HP+'s lifetime account, connectivity and Original HP Toner conditions; verify any actual enrollment offer independently.

This is print-only hardware, with no scanner, copier, feeder or fax. Choose it for a compatible connected monochrome office accepting manual duplex. If automatic duplex, offline operation or included private-job storage is essential, compare an exact configuration that positively includes that requirement. Check the actual electrical plate: the support source lists separate low- and high-voltage editions, not a universal-voltage supply.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original exact ne comparison declares up to 42 Letter ppm, separately 40 A4 ppm. Exact support recommends 750–4,000 printed pages monthly versus 80,000 maximum monthly duty. Source figures are not measured results or automatic-duplex rates.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2 equals 350 ordinary sheets on 75-g/m², 20-lb basis. Exact ranges and original loading instructions support Letter, Legal and A4 in the included arrangement; A4/Legal extend Tray 2 behind the body. Automatic duplex explicitly unavailable on ne. Optional 550-sheet feeder is excluded from the 900-sheet accessory maximum. Envelopes up to ten and labels use Tray 1 only; output 150 is separate.

Scanning arrangement

Exact US print-only monochrome laser, with no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. App names and print-management menus do not establish document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Original exact ne column includes Ethernet and computer USB, explicitly excludes wireless server, BLE and standard Wi-Fi Direct. HP+ requires an HP account, Internet connection and exclusive Original HP Toner for the life of the printer. USB desktop printing is conditional on retaining a separate Ethernet Internet arrangement; it is not an offline USB setup. Shared-network mobile printing does not imply included printer Wi-Fi.

Supplies and declared yields

Original exact 4001 supplies table identifies replacement 148A W1480A and 148X W1480X black toner, distinct from 4002 regional 149 cartridges. Included and replacement yields are not established here. HP+ lifetime Original HP Toner requirement is distinct from optional Instant Ink enrollment and any dated promotional trial; no live offer or cost-per-page promise.

Software and support

Complete supported HP setup, account registration and current compatible driver/firmware checks. AirPrint and Mopria use the suitable shared network. Base PIN release is false because dedicated rear-host USB 2.0 storage of at least 16 GB must be purchased; driver Job Storage controls and actual Personal Job retrieval are documented only with that accessory. Removing storage disables the feature; storage is formatted during setup.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US 2Z599E#BGJ is explicitly discontinued. Exact support body is 15 × 14.06 × 8.5 inches and 18.13 lb with unstated cartridge basis; original family guide gives 19.6 lb with cartridge and a larger fully open depth, so that difference is retained. Allow rear tray extension and service access. Source lists separate 110–127-V and 220–240-V, 50/60-Hz editions, not dual voltage; exact electrical option crosswalk remains unconfirmed, so verify the actual plate.
