Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible Ethernet computer print, scan, copy and fax with color Legal-original capture and 150 ordinary input sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the supported full software. Legal originals use the simplex feeder; fax separately needs the working configured analog telephone arrangement. Neither is supplied by the Ethernet cable alone.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it automatically print both sides of Letter pages over USB?
Fails. The documented print duplex routine is manual and requires reinserting paper for the second pass.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it qualify for a specifically Legal-sized flatbed scan?
Fails because that exact glass size is unconfirmed in the reviewed evidence. A glass route exists with size flexible, and Legal is confirmed through the simplex feeder; the feeder limit is not borrowed by the glass.
Explore this need in the finder →A discontinued wired MFP for a compatible existing setup
The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf suits an established office that needs monochrome printing, copying, color scans and conventional analog fax without expecting a wireless radio. It includes USB and native Ethernet, a 150-sheet blank-paper input, a flatbed and a 35-sheet original feeder. Its limitation is that two-sided printing and original handling remain manual.
HP's exact US CE841A#BGJ reference explicitly marks it discontinued. This earlier-model assessment describes the supported original arrangements, not current stock, service condition or a guarantee that all capture functions work on every present operating system. The wireless nfw model has different hardware; its radio and direct-print menus are not assigned to this nf.
The maker's one-sided print declaration is up to 19 Letter pages per minute, separately 18 ppm on A4. Recommended monthly print volume is 250–2,000 pages. The 8,000-page duty maximum is a different limit rather than an appropriate routine or a test result from us.
Set up computer printing and scanning as a complete arrangement
Connect a computer through USB or install the MFP on a functional TCP/IP Ethernet network. The original network instructions connect the printer to a router or hub, verify the network link and select network installation in the software setup. Use the actual supported package rather than assuming a generic working print queue supplies scanner functions.
The original guide documents HP LaserJet Scan for Windows, HP Director for period Mac systems and TWAIN/WIA application capture. In the scan program, choose a destination, capture the original and save the resulting file. Email scanning uses the computer application and client; it is not a printer SMTP gateway operating independently of the computer.
The exact maker reference lists period operating systems and separately warns that some server installations receive only print and scan drivers. Verify the combination of computer, driver and application that you actually have. A modern support-page heading is not evidence that a historical full software suite has unchanged functionality.
Use the simplex feeder for ordinary multipage originals
The 35-sheet ADF has a confirmed scan maximum of 8.5 by 14 inches. Ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 loose originals fit the documented feeder range. The exact specification expressly says no duplex ADF scanning, so a two-sided original needs manual handling rather than an automatic single-pass or reversing routine.
Load supported originals face up and bring the guides against the stack. The dedicated loading instructions exclude photographs, small or fragile originals, correction material, clips and staples. Use the glass for a suitable item that should not pass through the feeder.
The flatbed route and color capture are confirmed, but an exact flatbed-size limit has not been established in this evidence set. A specific glass-size requirement therefore remains unqualified instead of borrowing the feeder's Legal maximum. The guide also distinguishes flatbed and feeder resolution limits; interpolation is not optical resolution.
Fax needs a separate telephone line connection
The fax modem and RJ-11 ports are included, but the Ethernet cable is not a telephone service. HP describes this product as analog and recommends a dedicated analog telephone line. Connect the documented line port and use the matching setup instructions for any downstream telephone or answering device.
The original setup has a voicemail restriction and limits the device chain. A modern voice adapter or arbitrary splitter is not automatically validated by the presence of a matching socket. Fax memory and transmission estimates use stated document conditions and are not guarantees for every scanned original.
Budget for manual duplex and a single paper tray
The one input holds 150 ordinary sheets or up to ten suitable envelopes. The reviewed exact reference does not establish a capacity-test paper weight. The 35-sheet document feeder and 100-sheet output bin are separate quantities, not additional blank-paper inputs.
The original paper table positively includes Letter, Legal and A4. Load ordinary stock face up, top forward, align the guides and straighten the stack without fanning it. Short media may need the extender tool. Driver-assisted two-sided printing requires reinsertion for the second pass and fails an automatic-duplex requirement.
AirPrint is documented with a possible firmware-upgrade requirement. Its supported local-network arrangement can use the printer on Ethernet and an Apple device through the accessible local network; it does not add Wi-Fi hardware or inherit desktop scanner controls. Mopria and private PIN release remain unconfirmed, and retired cloud-service names are not promised as functioning services.
HP's US 85A page independently maps ordinary CE841A#BGJ to CE285A replacement toner, approximately 1,600 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. That is not remaining toner. Regional electrical editions and preliminary family body figures need an actual unit check. Choose another documented configuration when automatic duplex, wireless hardware or a confirmed specific glass size is essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker one-sided printing up to 19 Letter ppm, separately 18 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly print volume 250–2,000 pages is not maximum duty 8,000. Fax estimates and scan page/image rates are separate from print speed; no measured throughput or endurance is claimed.
Paper handling
Included single input holds 150 ordinary sheets or ten suitable envelopes. Exact ordinary capacity-test weight is not established; supported-media range or output-weight basis is not substituted. Original named paper table confirms Letter, Legal and A4 input. ADF 35 originals and output 100 are separate. Print duplex is manual and requires a second paper pass. Load face up, top forward, with guides snug; straighten without fanning. Short stock can require the original extender tool. No accessory or envelope duplex is assumed.
Scanning arrangement
Exact nf has glass and a 35-sheet original feeder, with confirmed ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 simplex originals within the 8.5 × 14-inch feeder maximum. Duplex ADF explicitly No; automatic and single-pass scanning false. The flatbed route is confirmed but its exact size range is unconfirmed, recorded as an empty size list. Color capture positive; original flatbed and feeder resolutions differ and software interpolation is separate. Use dedicated face-up feeder loading instructions, excluding photos, fragile/small originals, correction material, staples and clips.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0, native 10/100Base-T Ethernet and RJ-11 telephone hardware. Exact nf has no included wireless route; no nfw radio, optional converter or Direct accessory is assumed. Full compatible computer software is required for the assessed USB/Ethernet file capture arrangements. AirPrint is a separate local-network printing route with compatible firmware, not proof of an included Wi-Fi radio. Mopria remains unconfirmed; mobile jobs do not inherit desktop capture, paper-capacity or PIN controls.
Supplies and declared yields
Original HP US 85A page independently lists ordinary M1212nf CE841A#BGJ and CE285A replacement at approximately 1,600 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. This replacement declaration is not introductory toner remaining, a measured yield, current price or cost per page. Regional CE285A/CC388A family references are not interchangeable without the exact local mapping. No HP+ lifetime policy is inferred.
Software and support
Use an actually compatible full computer package for HP LaserJet Scan, HP Director or TWAIN/WIA capture and file/client-email delivery. Native network installation selects the network connection and verifies the link. Current OS, driver and application support must be checked; historical listings and generic queues are not blanket guarantees. AirPrint may require a firmware upgrade. Retired cloud-service availability and private PIN release are unconfirmed. Analog fax separately requires the proper line port, cord and compatible working telephone service; HP recommends a dedicated analog line, documents a voicemail restriction and limits connected downstream devices.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US CE841A#BGJ explicitly discontinued. The US technical body lists both 110–127 V at 60 Hz and 220–240 V at 50/60 Hz editions without an independently established option mapping; mains unknown, not universal voltage. The original family body table is explicitly preliminary, so exact body scalars remain unknown. Carton and pallet figures are excluded. Measure the actual unit with paper supports, glass lid, feeder, toner and cables accessible.
