LaserJet Pro M1217nfw (CE844A#BGJ; earlier US reference)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An existing compatible full-software computer setup needing monochrome office documents, color file capture and a separately connected analog fax line.

The main tradeoff

No automatic print duplex or duplex scanning. Legacy direct printing is not standard Wi-Fi Direct, glass size and exact body limits remain unconfirmed, and current software compatibility needs checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer print, scan, copy and fax with color Legal-original feeder capture and 150 ordinary input sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the supported full computer software. Legal originals use the simplex feeder; fax separately needs the documented working analog telephone arrangement. Printed and copied output is monochrome.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can it automatically scan both sides of originals through the feeder on office Wi-Fi?

Fails. The exact model specification expressly says no duplex ADF scanning. Wireless networking does not change that hardware limitation.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does its legacy Wireless Direct menu establish a standard Wi-Fi Direct questionnaire connection?

Fails. The reviewed original names describe older HP Direct Print or ad-hoc arrangements; standard Wi-Fi Direct is not established and no equivalent connection is invented.

Earlier monochrome office work with wireless networking

The HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw combines black-and-white printing, copying, color scanning and an analog fax modem. It suits an established compatible computer setup that needs both an original feeder and office Wi-Fi. Its limits are manual two-sided work, a modest paper supply and software that must be checked against the actual computer.

The exact US reference identifies CE844A#BGJ and currently says not available. This is presented as an earlier model with the documented period software, without inventing a formal discontinuation date from that wording. A present support page or old software disc does not guarantee a supported scanning application on every current operating system.

HP declares up to 19 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 18 ppm on A4. Its recommended print range is 250–2,000 pages monthly. The 8,000-page maximum duty figure is a different ceiling and is not an everyday workload target or a measured endurance result.

The 35-sheet feeder captures one side at a time

The original M1210 configuration includes a flatbed and a 35-sheet document feeder. Exact M1217nfw specifications confirm an 8.5-by-14-inch feeder scan maximum, supporting ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 loose originals. They explicitly say no duplex ADF scanning.

Place supported loose originals face up in the feeder and adjust the guides. The original loading instructions warn against photographs, small or fragile originals, correction material, clips and staples. Use the glass for a suitable item that should not travel through the feeder. The glass route itself is confirmed, but its exact size limit is not independently established here, so a selected specific flatbed size does not qualify.

Color scanning is positively documented, separately from monochrome print and copy output. The original guide distinguishes its flatbed and feeder resolution limits. A high flatbed figure must not be copied into a promise about the feeder, and software interpolation must not be called optical resolution.

Scanning is performed through the computer software

The guide provides HP LaserJet Scan for Windows, HP Director for period Mac systems, and TWAIN/WIA application routines. Select the actual scanner and destination, start the capture, then save or deliver the file through the compatible computer application. The exact technical reference says its file, application and email delivery functions are from the PC.

The assessed full-software arrangements combine the model's documented USB or network installation with those scanner routines. Install the correct package and verify both print and scan functions. A generic printer queue, a surviving download page or an unrelated newer HP app does not establish equivalent capture support.

For Ethernet, use a functional TCP/IP network, connect the printer through the router or hub and choose the network installation in the original software procedure. The wireless addendum separately describes installing the printer on an infrastructure wireless network and checking its configuration report. That is the office Wi-Fi arrangement assessed here.

Legacy wireless direct is not a standard Wi-Fi Direct claim

The exact maker reference names HP wireless direct printing and AirPrint, with a possible firmware-update requirement for AirPrint compatibility. The original addendum describes both an ad-hoc installation and HP Direct Print through its Wireless Direct menu. These older names are retained rather than converted into a claim of standard Wi-Fi Direct support.

AirPrint is assessed as its own compatible, firmware-qualified local-network printing route. It does not borrow the full computer scanner, exact paper capacity or driver controls. Old HP ePrint service names are not treated as promises of a functioning cloud service today. Mopria and private PIN release remain unconfirmed.

Keep paper, fax and electrical requirements separate

The standard input holds 150 ordinary sheets or up to ten suitable envelopes. The reviewed exact source does not establish the ordinary capacity-test weight. Neither the 35-sheet original feeder nor the 100-sheet output bin adds blank-paper capacity. Letter, Legal and A4 printing are documented in the original paper table.

Load ordinary paper face up, top forward, with the guides snug against it. The guide specifically says to straighten the stack without fanning it. Short media may need the supplied extender tool. Two-sided printing is manual, requiring the compatible driver routine and paper reinsertion; it does not satisfy automatic-duplex requirements.

Fax uses its separate line port and a compatible telephone service. HP describes the product as analog and recommends a dedicated analog line; the computer network is not that line. Follow the actual downstream-device instructions, including its voicemail restriction. The US reference positively lists 110–127 V at 60 Hz, while regional high-voltage versions differ. Introductory toner is listed without a verified included-page yield. Confirm exact regional supplies and measure the installed unit; family preliminary dimensions and carton measurements are not substituted for an exact body limit.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided printing up to 19 Letter ppm, separately 18 A4 ppm. Recommended print range 250–2,000 pages monthly is separate from maximum duty 8,000. Feeder color scan rates, first-page timing and software interpolation are not print speed or measured results.

Paper handling

Included single input holds 150 ordinary sheets or up to ten suitable envelopes; ordinary capacity-test weight remains unconfirmed. Supported-media weight is not substituted for that basis. Original paper table supports Letter, Legal and A4 print input. Original ADF 35 and output 100 are separate. Two-sided printing is manual, not automatic. Load ordinary paper face up, top forward and adjust guides; straighten the stack without fanning. Short stock under the documented threshold needs the extender. No optional feeder or envelope duplex is assumed.

Scanning arrangement

Exact M1217nfw flatbed plus 35-sheet simplex ADF, with explicit no duplex ADF scanning. Ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 loose originals fit the confirmed 8.5 × 14-inch feeder scan maximum. Glass route is positively present but its exact size range remains unconfirmed, recorded as an empty size list rather than an invented limit. Color capture is positive. Original guide distinguishes flatbed up to 1,200 ppi and feeder up to 300 ppi; interpolation is separate. Use face-up feeder loading instructions; avoid photos, fragile/small originals, correction material, staples and clips.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact nfw includes USB 2.0, native 10/100Base-T Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi and RJ-11 telephone hardware. Original full-software computer installation and scanner routines support the assessed desktop arrangements. Wireless addendum describes infrastructure setup, older ad-hoc networking and HP Direct Print/Wireless Direct; these legacy names are not asserted as standard Wi-Fi Direct, so no standard Direct plan. AirPrint is a separate local-network printing route with required compatible firmware; Mopria remains unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US box lists an introductory black toner cartridge without a verified included-page yield here. A newly read original HP US 85A supply page independently lists the ordinary CE844A#BGJ M1217nfw, not only the refurbished model, and confirms CE285A replacement at approximately 1,600 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. This replacement yield is not supplied toner remaining. Verify the actual regional cartridge; no measured yield, price, running cost or HP+ lifetime policy is invented.

Software and support

Use an actually compatible period full package for HP LaserJet Scan, HP Director or TWAIN/WIA file capture. Exact digital sending is from the PC, including client email; not an independent SMTP gateway. Verify actual current OS/application support rather than infer it from a print queue or general download page. AirPrint may require firmware upgrade and does not inherit desktop capture, paper or driver controls. Retired cloud-service availability and private PIN release are unconfirmed. Analog fax needs the separate line port, correct cord and working compatible telephone arrangement; HP recommends a dedicated analog line and does not support voicemail in the documented setup.

Electrical edition and setup

US exact CE844A#BGJ identity and exact US technical reference positively establish 110–127 V at 60 Hz. Separate regional 220–240 V units are not universal voltage. Earlier classification reflects the documented period setup and exact current not-available wording, without an independently observed formal discontinued notice or date. Generic family dimensions are explicitly preliminary; exact body limits remain unknown, and carton dimensions/weight are excluded. Allow glass, feeder, paper, toner and cable access.
