Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an earlier M15w serve a 1,000-page monthly Letter workflow over shared Wi-Fi with AirPrint and 150 sheets loaded?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a supported device on the shared Wi-Fi network. The maker recommended monthly maximum is 1,000 pages and the included Letter tray holds 150 sheets.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically turn Letter sheets for two-sided USB printing?
Fails. HP explicitly identifies the M15w as having no automated duplex printing; USB does not add that hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its direct wireless setup print US Legal documents on 14-inch sheets?
Fails the Legal requirement. The exact published custom maximum length is 11.69 inches; Letter and A4 are the supported full-page choices retained here.
Explore this need in the finder →A small monochrome printer with a narrow job
The HP LaserJet Pro M15w makes sense when the task is modest black-and-white printing and desk space matters more than office expansion. The reviewed US W2G51A#BGJ is an earlier model that HP now marks discontinued. Its appeal is a short list of useful connections in a small body: a computer can print over USB, devices can share it through Wi-Fi, and a compatible mobile device can connect using genuine Wi-Fi Direct. There is no Ethernet socket in the documented standard configuration.
Choose it for letters, forms, reading material and occasional envelopes. Do not plan a household scanning station around it. The exact hardware function is print only. HP's references to scanning from a smartphone describe a phone and its app; they do not give this printer a scanner glass or document feeder. It cannot independently copy an original, scan a paper stack or receive a fax. That distinction matters more than the app name when deciding whether one device can handle all the paperwork on a desk.
Connections that solve different problems
USB provides a straightforward local printing arrangement with a compatible computer and driver. It does not turn the printer into a network AirPrint endpoint. For supported AirPrint or Mopria printing, use the documented shared Wi-Fi arrangement and check that the phone or tablet can reach the printer. This separates the benefit of wireless discovery from the simpler cable connection.
Wi-Fi Direct is also explicitly documented for this model. It lets a compatible device join the printer's own wireless signal without first sharing a router network. That can help in a small workspace with no suitable existing network, but joining the printer signal is a real setup step. Confirm the application and device support rather than assuming that every mobile printing method operates identically in this peer connection. Historical cloud-service names on an older product page are not a guarantee that those services remain available.
Paper limits are more consequential than its footprint
The single input tray holds up to 150 sheets, and the output bin is rated for 100. Those figures suit short runs with someone nearby to refill and collect pages. They are plain-paper capacities, not a promise that 150 envelopes can be loaded. HP lists Letter, A4 and several smaller formats, along with No. 10, C5 and DL envelopes. Set the actual paper size and media type in the driver when switching jobs.
Legal is an important exclusion. The published custom media maximum is 8.5 by 11.69 inches, which does not accommodate a 14-inch Legal sheet. Another exclusion is automatic duplex: HP explicitly says this model does not have automated two-sided printing. If producing two-sided packets without handling the stack is essential, this is the wrong hardware, regardless of whether the job arrives by USB or wirelessly.
The closed body measures 13.6 inches wide, 7.5 deep and 6.3 high, at 8.4 pounds. Those are attractive storage dimensions, but HP's maximum operating dimensions expand to 13.6 by 13.7 by 11 inches. Leave room to open the paper supports and retrieve the output. A shelf that fits the closed housing can still be awkward in daily use.
Volume, toner and an earlier model's buying checks
HP rates one-sided Letter printing at up to 19 pages per minute; its A4 figure is separately 18. These are maker maximums, not our measured performance or a two-sided rate. The recommended monthly volume is 100 to 1,000 pages. The much larger 8,000-page duty-cycle figure describes a maximum reference point and should not replace that recommended workload when sizing a routine printing job.
The original introductory cartridge is declared around 500 pages. Replacement HP 48A CF248A toner is declared around 1,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, with actual yield depending on what is printed. Neither declaration tells you how much toner remains in a particular used machine. HP also documents dynamic security: cartridges need a new or reused HP chip, and firmware can block cartridges with other chips. Check the actual supply you intend to use before treating a low purchase price as a complete running-cost answer.
For this US edition, the published nominal supply is 110–127 volts at 50–60 Hz. Verify the physical rating label and the current driver for your computer. The surviving HP pages differ on whether a USB cable was included, so inspect the actual package. A working M15w can remain a useful small Letter/A4 printer when its limited paper handling and print-only scope match the job.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker maximum 19 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 18 A4. ISO/IEC 24734 excludes the first test set; actual application, driver and document affect speed. Not a duplex rate.
Paper handling
One included 150-sheet input tray. Letter and A4 are supported; the published custom maximum is 8.5 × 11.69 inches, so Legal is not a supported selection here. No automatic duplex. No. 10, C5 and DL envelopes are documented; envelope capacity is not 150.
Scanning arrangement
The exact function is print only. HP app smartphone scanning does not supply a flatbed, document feeder, hardware copy or fax function.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and built-in 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi; genuine Wi-Fi Direct is explicitly documented. AirPrint and Mopria are kept in the supported shared-network plan rather than borrowed by USB or an unverified peer protocol arrangement.
Supplies and declared yields
Original introductory black toner is declared approximately 500 pages. Compatible replacement HP 48A CF248A is approximately 1,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 and continuous printing; actual content changes yield. HP documents dynamic security requiring a new or reused HP chip.
Software and support
Verify the current driver and mobile operating system. Old Google Cloud Print and app references do not establish an operating cloud service today. Wireless and app features depend on the actual supported arrangement.
Electrical edition and setup
Reviewed US W2G51A#BGJ specifies nominal 110–127 V, 50–60 Hz; check the rating label. Closed body is 13.6 × 7.5 × 6.3 inches, while the maker maximum operating dimensions are 13.6 × 13.7 × 11. Box USB-cable statements conflict between exact store and regional family pages, so cable inclusion is not promised.
