Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a supported USB computer automatically duplex Legal documents at 2,500 pages per month with 260 included sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible HP print driver. Legal is explicit in both original tray duplex rows, included capacity is 260 and the recommended monthly maximum is 2,500.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a compatible Apple device use AirPrint for one-sided Letter documents on the shared Wi-Fi network?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, supported AirPrint 1.5 device and the same network subnet. This answer does not assert automatic duplex through AirPrint.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the HP phone app make the M203dw a document scanner and copier?
Fails the scan-and-copy requirement. The printer is print-only hardware; smartphone capture is performed by the phone.
Explore this need in the finder →A small wired or wireless printer with a specific workload
The HP LaserJet Pro M203dw suits a small office producing black-and-white documents through a computer or supported mobile setup. The reviewed US G3Q47A#BGJ is discontinued, so this is an earlier-model assessment. Its useful combination is a standard automatic duplexer, a 250-sheet main tray and several genuine connection choices. These can make routine letters and longer reports convenient without turning the printer into a large multifunction machine.
HP's recommended monthly range is 250 to 2,500 pages. That is the meaningful workload reference here. Surviving HP records disagree on maximum duty cycle, showing both 20,000 and 30,000 pages, so that maximum remains unconfirmed rather than being used to inflate a routine-volume recommendation. The one-sided Letter speed is separately rated up to 30 pages per minute; it is a maker claim, not a measurement of an individual used unit or a duplex rate.
Paper flexibility comes from two standard feeds
The standard main tray holds 250 sheets and the priority feed holds ten, using the guide's 75 g/m² paper basis. Letter, Legal and A4 appear in both tray tables for one-sided and two-sided work. The included normal-paper capacity is therefore 260 sheets for those sizes. The priority feed is useful for interrupting ordinary output with a short run on another supported stock; it is not a second full-size cassette.
Longer Legal paper needs more loading room at the front. When using envelopes, choose the correct envelope size and type and follow the manual-feed driver routine. The guide limits either tray to ten envelopes, a separate rule from the main tray's 250-sheet plain-paper capacity. Keep specialty media and automatic duplex requirements separate rather than assuming that any sheet accepted by a tray can use every paper path.
Automatic duplex is included and documented with the compatible HP-driver routine. Configure the correct paper and binding direction for the actual job. A printer capable of turning the sheet still needs a driver or application that requests the intended two-sided layout.
Connection details determine what is actually available
USB supports a local computer with the appropriate driver. For sharing, the technical specifications list 10/100 Ethernet and built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. A generic marketing paragraph calls the wired connection Gigabit, but the exact port rows consistently specify 10/100; that is the interface retained here. Ethernet sharing can work without giving the printer its own wireless radio connection, provided devices can reach it through the network.
AirPrint 1.5 is documented for supported Apple devices on the same network subnet. The original shared user guide qualifies automatic duplex on OS X: it is available with the HP print driver and might not be available through AirPrint. Thus ordinary network AirPrint and confirmed driver duplex are useful separate capabilities; their coexistence is not proof that every driverless application exposes automatic two-sided printing.
Genuine Wi-Fi Direct is another option. A compatible device can join the printer's signal without using a shared router, and the guide describes supported Android printing with an HP Print Service or Mopria plugin. Check the device's connection procedure and reconnect to the normal network afterward if required. A Wi-Fi Direct connection PIN is for joining the signal, not releasing a confidential held print job. A secure job-release PIN function was not established in the material read.
Supplies and physical access deserve attention
The M203dw has no paper scanner, copier or fax hardware. Phone-app scanning captures originals with the phone; it does not add a flatbed or feeder. The LED reference describes the control panel, while the engine remains a monochrome laser. These distinctions are useful when interpreting an older product page with many app and management features.
The correct replacement toner choices are HP 30A CF230A and 30X CF230X, declared approximately 1,600 and 3,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 with continuous printing. The original starter toner is approximately 1,000 pages. A separate 32A CF232A imaging drum has a different declared life, about 23,000 pages. Neither cartridge yield nor drum declaration tells you the condition of supplies in the offered machine. The shared guide's 94A and 94X entries are explicitly for the M118dw and are not substitutions for this model.
The exact US body dimensions are 14.6 inches wide, 16 deep and 8.8 high at 15.2 pounds. Fully open dimensions extend to 24.6 inches deep and 14.2 high, so allow access for paper and supplies. Verify a currently supported driver, actual firmware and the physical US 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz rating label. HP expressly separates the 220–240-volt edition rather than describing a universal supply. A complete M203dw is most useful when its driver-based duplex and documented connection arrangement fit the work you actually need.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact US maximum 30 one-sided Letter pages per minute under ISO/IEC 24734 excluding the first set. Not a measured test or a duplex rate. HP duty-cycle records conflict between 20,000 and 30,000; maximum duty remains unconfirmed, while the consistent recommended range is 250–2,500 pages monthly.
Paper handling
Standard 250-sheet main tray plus 10-sheet priority tray, each rated at 75 g/m². The original shared guide explicitly lists Letter/Legal/A4 in both one- and two-sided tray rows; total included normal input 260 for each. Up to 10 envelopes per tray use the documented manual-feed setup. Larger Legal stock needs front clearance.
Scanning arrangement
The exact US function is print only. Smartphone scanning uses the phone; there is no flatbed, document feeder, independent copier or fax hardware. Automatic duplex concerns printed output only.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact technical ports are Hi-Speed USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet and built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, plus genuine Wi-Fi Direct. A generic store paragraph calling the Ethernet Gigabit is rejected against the technical rows. Supported network AirPrint 1.5 is separated from confirmed HP-driver duplex because the guide warns AirPrint may omit duplex.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact replacements HP 30A CF230A about 1,600 pages or 30X CF230X about 3,500; separate 32A CF232A imaging drum about 23,000 pages. Original starter toner about 1,000 pages. HP toner yield basis is ISO/IEC 19752 with continuous printing, not remaining supply or cost per page. The 94A/94X rows are explicitly M118dw-only and are not used.
Software and support
Verify a current compatible HP driver and actual firmware. Confirmed driver duplex, same-subnet AirPrint and compatible Android Wi-Fi Direct/Mopria-plugin printing are separate arrangements. Historical cloud/voice-service names do not establish current operation. Administration passwords and Wi-Fi connection PINs do not prove secure held-job PIN release.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US G3Q47A#BGJ plus HP electrical footnote 17 establishes US 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz, not dual voltage. Check the label. Exact US closed body 14.6 × 16 × 8.8 inches and 15.2 lb; maximum open 14.6 × 24.6 × 14.2. Current exact US dimensions take precedence over rounded 14.5-inch common guide width.
