LaserJet Pro M402dnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Prepared black-and-white office documents using a compatible computer driver for automatic duplex within HP’s 750–4,000-page recommended monthly range.

The main tradeoff

No scanner or radio. Mobile AirPrint/Mopria printing is separate from the confirmed desktop duplex route, and PIN release needs separately purchased USB storage.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier M402dn automatically duplex Legal documents from a USB computer with 350 included Legal sheets and a 4,000-page monthly recommendation?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible installed HP driver. Legal feed and automatic duplex are positively documented, and 350 excludes the optional 550-sheet accessory.

Does its AirPrint listing confirm automatic A4 duplex in the AirPrint route?

Fails this essential combination. Network AirPrint printing is positive, but the original guide warns that the HP driver’s automatic duplex control may be absent in AirPrint; that mobile route remains unknown for duplex.

Does a standard dn provide PIN-held print jobs without adding USB storage?

Fails included PIN release. The dedicated flash drive and compatible job-storage setup are optional prerequisites, even though the printer can support the feature after adding them.

For automatic monochrome duplex from a compatible computer driver

The HP LaserJet Pro M402dn is useful when an office needs prepared black-and-white documents printed automatically on both sides through USB or wired Ethernet. It supplies that turning mechanism and 350 ordinary sheets without adding a cassette. Its limits are the print-only hardware, lack of a wireless radio and the differences between the desktop driver and a mobile print route.

HP's exact US listing identifies C5F94A#BGJ and explicitly says it is discontinued. The reviewed low-voltage configuration requires 110–127 volts at 50/60 Hz. Separate regional option codes use 220–240 volts; HP states that the power supply is not dual voltage. Confirm the actual machine's rating rather than relying on a shared family name.

Declared one-sided output is up to 40 Letter pages per minute, separately 38 A4 in the original user guide. Those are maker figures, not measured results from this review or a duplex throughput promise. The recommended monthly print range is 750–4,000 pages, whereas 80,000 is the separate maximum duty rating.

The included paper path supports ordinary Letter, Legal and A4

The dn includes a 100-sheet multipurpose feed and a 250-sheet cassette. The original capacity instructions use 75-g/m² paper, and HP's supported-media table positively includes Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds and the installed duplexer. That supports 350 ordinary sheets of the selected size when both feeds actually hold it.

A 550-sheet third tray is optional. The advertised 900-sheet maximum therefore does not describe the standard machine's included input. Paper already loaded in another size or type cannot be counted again for a particular run.

Use the driver's paper size, type and source settings to match the loaded media. For automatic two-sided output, the original Windows driver selects Print on both sides; the original OS X HP driver selects a binding option in Two-Sided. Check how the finished pages should turn, especially for landscape material or letterhead.

HP distinguishes the paths for different media. Tray 1 alone handles envelopes and labels. For an envelope batch, select the actual envelope size, Envelope type and Manual feed source before loading up to ten supported envelopes face up, short postage end first. The duplexer does not provide a two-sided envelope routine, and broader tray-1 weight limits do not apply to every stock in the duplex path.

Ethernet mobile printing is a separate route

The included computer interfaces are USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000T. Ethernet can provide a shared desktop queue with a compatible installed driver; USB provides direct computer printing. The host USB socket used for optional job storage is separate from the computer connection.

The exact US model also lists AirPrint and Mopria. Supported devices use the same suitable network subnet as the printer. A phone can reach that Ethernet-connected printer through the shared network even though the M402dn itself has no Wi-Fi radio.

However, the original OS X instructions expressly warn that automatic duplex may not be available when using AirPrint instead of the HP driver. This assessment keeps network mobile printing separate from the positively documented desktop duplex routine. It does not promise an essential AirPrint-plus-automatic-duplex combination by assigning one route's controls to the other.

The old manual's cloud-service names also do not guarantee a working present service. Check actual device, driver and app availability. This is still a monochrome printer: neither mobile software nor the two-sided output unit supplies a scanner, standalone copier, feeder or fax.

Private-job storage needs an extra device

The printer supports an optional stored-job routine, but the standard box does not provide the required storage. The original guide requires a dedicated rear USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16GB free space. It is formatted during setup, and removing it disables job storage. A supported driver is also necessary; the original minimum for HP Universal Print Driver is version 5.9.0.

After appropriate optional setup, the driver can create a Personal Job with optional PIN protection and the user retrieves it from Job Storage at the control panel. That is different from the network administrator password. The included configuration therefore does not satisfy a requirement for ready-to-use PIN release.

Check supplies and leave working room

The US page lists a supplied 26A cartridge at approximately 3,100 pages. Replacement 26A CF226A is also declared at approximately 3,100 pages, and high-yield 26X CF226X at approximately 9,000, using ISO/IEC 19752 maker conditions. Those figures do not establish remaining toner in a used unit or the yield of a particular document. No current price per page is calculated.

Its closed body is approximately 15.0 inches wide, 14.06 deep and 8.5 high. Allow extra room for loaded or open trays, the rear path and cartridge access. The current exact weight differs from the original manual's with-cartridge figure, so an unqualified weight field is left unknown. Choose the dn for its documented desktop duplex arrangement; choose an appropriately documented alternative if native wireless, paper capture or confirmed duplex from the intended mobile app is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided black Letter rate up to 40 ppm, separately 38 A4 in original manual. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 versus separate 80,000 maximum duty. No independent speed test or two-sided rate inferred.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose tray 1 plus 250-sheet tray 2, total 350 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Original HP c04813259 table positively supports Letter/Legal/A4 in both feeds. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 is not included in the 350-sheet plan. Only tray 1 handles envelopes or labels; up to ten envelopes, face up with short postage end leading, actual Envelope type/size and Manual feed source in compatible driver. Ordinary cassette media 60–120 g/m²; tray 1 wider named range 60–175 g/m² does not make every type suitable for duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Exact monochrome print-only laser; no scanner, feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. Print duplex and an app name containing All-in-One do not establish document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact M402dn includes USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000T, no wireless radio or Wi-Fi Direct. Compatible desktop HP driver supports actual Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex. Separate same-subnet supported AirPrint/Mopria route confirms mobile printing, with automatic duplex unknown rather than borrowed from the desktop driver.

Supplies and declared yields

US 26A CF226A replacement approximately 3,100 pages and 26X CF226X approximately 9,000, ISO/IEC 19752 maker declarations. Actual content changes yield; original supplied cartridges differ by suffix and must not be equated to every replacement. Current remaining toner and price per page unknown. Exact original US dn box lists a supplied 26A at approximately 3,100 pages; the n introductory 1,500-page figure is not substituted.

Software and support

Compatible HP computer driver needed for the documented desktop print routines. AirPrint/Mopria same-network mobile route is separate: original OS X manual explicitly warns two-sided options may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans do not borrow automatic duplex from the desktop driver. Included configuration does not qualify PIN release: job storage requires a separately purchased dedicated USB flash drive, original manual at least 16 GB free, a supported driver and optional setup/formatting. If UPD is used, original minimum is 5.9.0. No optional USB storage added to a normal plan. Retired cloud services named in old documents are not promised.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed exact US low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V option-code editions, explicitly not dual voltage. Current exact body 15.0×14.06×8.5 inches agrees with original 381×357×216 mm. Current exact weight 18.92 lb differs from original 19.6 lb with cartridges, so unqualified weight remains null. Current maximum depth 25 inches differs from original fully open 30.8 inches; closed dimensions do not guarantee complete operating/service clearance. Optional tray adds height and weight.
