Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the earlier M402dne support Mopria printing over an Ethernet network with 350 included Letter sheets?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a supported Mopria device on the same suitable network subnet. This mobile route does not inherit the HP desktop driver’s automatic-duplex or envelope controls.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require both AirPrint and automatic Legal duplex in the same mobile route?
Fails the essential combination. AirPrint printing is positively listed, but the original guide says automatic-duplex controls may be unavailable through AirPrint; the mobile plan therefore leaves duplex unknown.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 256 MB dne package include 900 A4 sheets without another tray?
Fails included input capacity. It contains 100 plus 250 ordinary sheets; reaching the family maximum requires the optional 550-sheet cassette. Additional memory is unrelated to paper capacity.
Explore this need in the finder →The 256MB wired version for prepared monochrome documents
The HP LaserJet Pro M402dne offers automatic two-sided printing, USB and Gigabit Ethernet in a monochrome, print-only device. Its exact US specification lists 256MB of memory. The useful role is a supported office print queue with ordinary paper already prepared electronically; that memory figure does not add a scanner, wireless radio or more included paper.
HP's exact US listing identifies C5J91A#BGJ and explicitly marks it discontinued. This assessment covers the documented 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz US configuration. The maker separately lists 220–240-volt regional editions and says the supply is not dual voltage. Confirm the label on the actual machine rather than assuming a matching model name establishes its electrical edition.
HP declares up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute. The family guide separately gives 38 A4. These are maker rates affected by the document, software and driver, not measurements here or a prediction of two-sided job completion time. Recommended monthly printing is 750–4,000 pages, separate from the 80,000-page maximum duty rating.
Included automatic duplex with 350 ordinary sheets
The exact dne technical table identifies a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet cassette. Original instructions state these ordinary capacities for 75-g/m² paper. HP's supported-media bulletin covers Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds and the installed automatic duplexer, so those ordinary sizes can use the documented desktop duplex routine.
The optional 550-sheet cassette raises the family maximum to 900. It is not in the standard 350-sheet configuration. When feeds contain different stocks, count only paper actually loaded for the particular run; memory and an automatic page-turning unit do not increase loaded input.
A compatible HP computer driver provides the established automatic-duplex controls. Choose Print on both sides in the original Windows routine, or the required binding edge in the original OS X HP driver. Configure the actual size and type to match the loaded sheets, and follow the supported media path rather than assuming the tray-1 maximum weight applies to duplex.
Envelope work uses tray 1 alone. The instructed computer-driver routine selects the envelope's actual size, Envelope type and Manual feed source, then loads up to ten supported envelopes face up, with the short postage end leading. Envelopes are a separate one-sided routine, not part of an automatic duplex job or a 350-envelope capacity.
Mobile network printing has its own feature boundary
USB 2.0 connects a compatible computer directly, and Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000T provides the native shared network connection. The host USB socket for optional job storage has a different purpose. The exact dne page says wireless capability is No; neither ordinary Wi-Fi nor Wi-Fi Direct is supplied by this suffix.
AirPrint and Mopria are positively listed for the exact model. The original mobile instructions require the supported device and printer to be on the same suitable network subnet. A phone may reach that wired printer through the shared network, without implying that the printer contains its own radio.
The original guide also warns that automatic duplex available through the HP desktop driver may not be available when using AirPrint. This review therefore treats desktop automatic duplex and network mobile printing as separate routes. A confirmed AirPrint connection does not automatically satisfy an additional essential two-sided requirement.
Check actual present driver and app support. Historical operating-system lists, old cloud-printing names and generic All-in-One application names do not establish current service availability or document scanning. The exact function is Print, using one black cartridge; there is no flatbed, feeder, standalone copier or analog fax.
Extra memory does not remove the private-job prerequisite
The US dne page positively lists 256MB DRAM, while its optional-storage footnote still requires a separately purchased USB flash drive. The original guide's storage instructions require a dedicated USB 2.0 drive with at least 16GB free in the rear host port, formatting and supported driver setup. HP Universal Print Driver needs at least the original stated version 5.9.0 when used.
After the appropriate optional setup, a Personal Job can have PIN protection and is released through Job Storage at the control panel. Removing the drive disables stored jobs. The included configuration therefore does not qualify for essential PIN release, regardless of its larger memory figure or network administrator password.
Cartridges and the working space around the body
The exact US box lists a supplied 26A cartridge at approximately 3,100 pages. Replacement 26A CF226A is declared at approximately 3,100 pages and 26X CF226X at approximately 9,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 maker conditions. Those figures differ from the M402n introductory cartridge, and actual remaining toner in a previously owned machine is unknown. No live supply price or page-cost estimate is assumed.
The closed body is approximately 15.0 inches wide, 14.06 deep and 8.5 high. Allow working room for paper, rear-path and cartridge access; the optional tray changes installed height and weight. Current and original weight figures differ, so no unqualified weight is used. Choose this model for its documented wired computer-driver duplex arrangement; choose an appropriately documented wireless or multifunction model when those other hardware routines are essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker one-sided black Letter rate up to 40 ppm, separately 38 A4 in original manual. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 versus separate 80,000 maximum duty. No independent speed test or two-sided rate inferred.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet multipurpose tray 1 plus 250-sheet tray 2, total 350 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Original HP c04813259 table positively supports Letter/Legal/A4 in both feeds. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 is not included in the 350-sheet plan. Only tray 1 handles envelopes or labels; up to ten envelopes, face up with short postage end leading, actual Envelope type/size and Manual feed source in compatible driver. Ordinary cassette media 60–120 g/m²; tray 1 wider named range 60–175 g/m² does not make every type suitable for duplex.
Scanning arrangement
Exact monochrome print-only laser; no scanner, feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. Print duplex and an app name containing All-in-One do not establish document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact C5J91A#BGJ M402dne has USB 2.0/Gigabit Ethernet and no wireless radio. Exact US 256 MB DRAM does not add scanning or USB job-storage media. Compatible HP desktop driver confirms automatic Letter/Legal/A4 duplex. Supported AirPrint/Mopria same-subnet mobile printing is a separate route with duplex unknown and no borrowed desktop envelope workflow.
Supplies and declared yields
US 26A CF226A replacement approximately 3,100 pages and 26X CF226X approximately 9,000, ISO/IEC 19752 maker declarations. Actual content changes yield; original supplied cartridges differ by suffix and must not be equated to every replacement. Current remaining toner and price per page unknown. Exact original US dne box lists a supplied 26A at approximately 3,100 pages, not the n’s introductory 1,500-page cartridge. Exact page also lists CF226XC as an alternative, without a yield used here.
Software and support
Compatible HP computer driver needed for the documented desktop print routines. AirPrint/Mopria same-network mobile route is separate: original OS X manual explicitly warns two-sided options may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans do not borrow automatic duplex from the desktop driver. Included configuration does not qualify PIN release: job storage requires a separately purchased dedicated USB flash drive, original manual at least 16 GB free, a supported driver and optional setup/formatting. If UPD is used, original minimum is 5.9.0. No optional USB storage added to a normal plan. Retired cloud services named in old documents are not promised.
Electrical edition and setup
Reviewed exact US low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V option-code editions, explicitly not dual voltage. Current exact body 15.0×14.06×8.5 inches agrees with original 381×357×216 mm. Current exact weight 18.92 lb differs from original 19.6 lb with cartridges, so unqualified weight remains null. Current maximum depth 25 inches differs from original fully open 30.8 inches; closed dimensions do not guarantee complete operating/service clearance. Optional tray adds height and weight.
