LaserJet Pro M402dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Prepared black-and-white office documents using a compatible computer driver over USB, Ethernet or 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, with separate documented shared-network mobile or Direct peer printing options.

The main tradeoff

No scanner or fax. AirPrint/Direct automatic duplex remains unconfirmed; PIN release needs separately purchased USB storage and 900-sheet input needs an optional cassette.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the earlier M402dw automatically duplex A4 from a compatible HP-driver computer over ordinary Wi-Fi with 350 included A4 sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a suitable 2.4-GHz infrastructure network. This is the documented desktop-driver route, not a promise of the same controls in a mobile app.

Can I require both AirPrint and automatic Letter duplex on the Wi-Fi mobile route?

Fails this essential combination. AirPrint printing is positively supported on the shared network, but its duplex controls are unconfirmed and do not borrow from the desktop HP driver.

Can it provide monochrome printing without an office router through genuine Wi-Fi Direct?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, Direct enabled at the panel and an actually supported compatible device such as the documented Android embedded printing route. This does not promise AirPrint/Mopria or automatic duplex over Direct.

Wireless monochrome printing, with a choice of actual routes

The HP LaserJet Pro M402dw suits prepared black-and-white documents when an office wants ordinary Wi-Fi as well as USB and wired Ethernet. It also includes automatic print duplex and genuine Wi-Fi Direct. Its deciding limitation is that those connection names do not establish every print control in every app: the desktop HP driver, network mobile printing and Direct peer printing have different documented boundaries.

HP's exact US listing identifies C5F95A#BGJ and explicitly marks it discontinued. This assessment covers the documented 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz US configuration. Other option-code editions use a separate 220–240-volt supply. HP states it is not dual voltage, so check the actual machine's rating before connecting an imported or previously owned unit.

The maker declares up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 38 A4 in the original guide. Neither is a measurement from this review or a guarantee of duplex completion time. The recommended monthly print range is 750–4,000 pages; its separate 80,000-page maximum duty rating is not the routine monthly target.

Distinguish the shared network from a Direct connection

Included interfaces are USB 2.0 computer printing, Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000T and 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi. HP's exact wireless footnote specifies 2.4-GHz operation. Do not assume an n radio here supplies a five-GHz network merely because a router offers one.

A supported computer with a compatible installed HP driver can use its actual USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection for the documented desktop routines. Verify current software availability for that computer. A historical operating-system list does not guarantee a present driver with every original option.

AirPrint and Mopria are positively listed for network mobile printing. The original guide requires a supported device and printer on the same suitable subnet. Keep that route separate from desktop automatic duplex: the guide expressly warns that two-sided options available in the OS X HP driver might not be available when using AirPrint.

Wi-Fi Direct is a genuine peer route on this exact dw, not a substitute name for ordinary Wi-Fi. The original instructions enable it through Network Setup and Wi-Fi Direct, then use a compatible device without joining the office router. The documented example uses supported Android embedded printing. Direct or NFC pairing does not establish that AirPrint, Mopria, duplex controls or a particular app feature works through that peer route.

Automatic page turning and two included feeds

The dw includes a 100-sheet multipurpose feed and a 250-sheet cassette, totaling 350 ordinary sheets at the original 75-g/m² capacity basis. HP's supported-media bulletin positively covers Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds and the automatic duplexer. These are normal print-sheet paths, not document-scanning routes.

For the confirmed computer-driver duplex routine, select the correct paper size and type, then choose the desired binding direction. The original Windows procedure uses Print on both sides; the original OS X HP driver uses the Two-Sided binding selection. Do not expect a mobile print dialog to expose those same controls.

Letterhead orientation differs between the feeds and between one- and two-sided work. The original tray-1 duplex instruction loads preprinted paper face down with its top edge leading; tray 2 uses face up with its top edge at the front. Follow the actual routine rather than moving a preloaded stack between feeds unchanged.

The optional 550-sheet cassette raises maximum input to 900 sheets, but is not included. When trays hold different sizes or types, count only the paper actually available for that task. Heavier stock and named media types have separate path restrictions; a broad tray-1 weight limit does not make all stocks duplex-compatible.

Envelopes and private jobs each need their instructed setup

Only tray 1 supports the documented envelope routine. In the compatible driver select the envelope's actual size, Envelope type and Manual feed source. Load up to ten supported envelopes face up, short postage end first. This is a one-sided desktop routine, rather than a mobile or automatic-duplex envelope promise.

Private-job storage also has an extra prerequisite. HP's original guide requires a dedicated rear USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16GB free, formatting and a supported driver. For HP Universal Print Driver the original minimum is version 5.9.0. Removing the drive disables stored jobs.

After that optional setup, a Personal Job can use PIN protection and is released through Job Storage at the panel. The standard package does not supply the extra storage, so it does not qualify for essential included PIN release. A network password or NFC pairing credential is not a document-job PIN feature.

Supplies, body space and the limits of print-only hardware

The exact US box lists a supplied 26A cartridge at approximately 3,100 pages. Replacement 26A CF226A is also approximately 3,100 and 26X CF226X approximately 9,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 maker conditions. Actual content changes yield, and remaining toner or current page cost is not established here.

The closed body is approximately 15.0 by 14.06 by 8.5 inches. Allow additional access for paper, the rear path and cartridges; optional input changes installed size and weight. Current and original weight figures differ, so no unqualified weight guarantee is used. The dw is a print-only monochrome laser, with no scanner, standalone copier or fax. Choose an MFP for paper-original capture, or a model with the exact documented mobile duplex route when that combination is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker one-sided black Letter rate up to 40 ppm, separately 38 A4 in original manual. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 versus separate 80,000 maximum duty. No independent speed test or two-sided rate inferred.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose tray 1 plus 250-sheet tray 2, total 350 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Original HP c04813259 table positively supports Letter/Legal/A4 in both feeds. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 is not included in the 350-sheet plan. Only tray 1 handles envelopes or labels; up to ten envelopes, face up with short postage end leading, actual Envelope type/size and Manual feed source in compatible driver. Ordinary cassette media 60–120 g/m²; tray 1 wider named range 60–175 g/m² does not make every type suitable for duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Exact monochrome print-only laser; no scanner, feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. Print duplex and an app name containing All-in-One do not establish document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact M402dw includes USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, 2.4-GHz 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi, genuine Wi-Fi Direct and compatible NFC printing. Desktop HP-driver automatic Letter/Legal/A4 duplex is recorded separately from same-subnet supported AirPrint/Mopria mobile printing, whose duplex is unknown. Direct peer route uses actual supported device/Android embedded printing; no AirPrint/Mopria, duplex or desktop envelope workflow borrowed into it.

Supplies and declared yields

US 26A CF226A replacement approximately 3,100 pages and 26X CF226X approximately 9,000, ISO/IEC 19752 maker declarations. Actual content changes yield; original supplied cartridges differ by suffix and must not be equated to every replacement. Current remaining toner and price per page unknown. Exact original US dw box lists a supplied 26A at approximately 3,100 pages. USB computer cable is positively listed for this US dw box, unlike the n/dn/dne cable notes; actual used-unit contents still require checking.

Software and support

Compatible HP computer driver needed for the documented desktop print routines. AirPrint/Mopria same-network mobile route is separate: original OS X manual explicitly warns two-sided options may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans do not borrow automatic duplex from the desktop driver. Included configuration does not qualify PIN release: job storage requires a separately purchased dedicated USB flash drive, original manual at least 16 GB free, a supported driver and optional setup/formatting. If UPD is used, original minimum is 5.9.0. No optional USB storage added to a normal plan. Retired cloud services named in old documents are not promised.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed exact US low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V option-code editions, explicitly not dual voltage. Current exact body 15.0×14.06×8.5 inches agrees with original 381×357×216 mm. Current exact weight 18.92 lb differs from original 19.6 lb with cartridges, so unqualified weight remains null. Current maximum depth 25 inches differs from original fully open 30.8 inches; closed dimensions do not guarantee complete operating/service clearance. Optional tray adds height and weight.
