Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the earlier M402n meet monochrome Letter printing, AirPrint over an Ethernet setup and 350 included Letter sheets at 4,000 pages per month?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a supported Apple device on the same suitable subnet. This is the mobile network plan; it does not provide automatic two-sided printing.
Explore this need in the finder →Will its USB driver automatically turn Legal sheets for two-sided output?
Fails automatic duplex. This exact n hardware lacks the duplexer and requires the instructed manual stack reload instead.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard M402n hold print jobs for PIN release without adding anything?
Fails included PIN release. Original job storage needs a separately purchased dedicated USB flash drive with at least 16 GB free and compatible driver setup; the host socket alone is not stored-job hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired monochrome printer with manual page turning
The HP LaserJet Pro M402n fits an office that wants USB or wired-network black-and-white output and can handle a second print pass manually when needed. Its included Ethernet connection also supports documented network mobile printing. The important limitation is the n configuration's lack of an automatic print duplexer: a generic M402 family feature list must not add one.
HP's exact US page identifies C5F93A#BGJ and explicitly marks this model discontinued. This assessment covers the documented US low-voltage 110–127-volt, 50/60-Hz configuration. The separate 220–240-volt editions are not the same electrical package, and HP expressly says the supply is not dual voltage. Check the actual label on an imported or previously owned machine.
The manufacturer declares up to 40 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 38 A4 in the original manual. Neither figure measures this reviewer's results or the throughput of a manually reloaded document. The recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 printed pages; the separate 80,000-page maximum duty figure is not an ongoing recommendation.
Choose the actual print route
Included connections are USB 2.0 computer printing and Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000T. A compatible installed driver provides the desktop routines. The host USB socket used for optional job storage serves a different purpose from the computer's USB connection; it does not add a scanner or an ordinary network interface.
The exact US specification positively lists AirPrint and Mopria. The original mobile instructions require the printer and supported mobile device to use the same network subnet. A wired printer can participate in that arrangement when the phone or tablet reaches the suitable shared network; the M402n itself does not have the wireless radio supplied on M402dw.
The older manual mentions several cloud services and mobile applications. Their appearance in a historical list does not establish that a retired service is available today. Current device and app compatibility still needs checking. The manufacturer's broad promotional description also refers to richer color, but the exact technical function and single black cartridge establish monochrome output.
Three hundred fifty sheets before optional expansion
The included feeds are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet cassette. Both capacities are stated for ordinary 75-g/m² paper. HP's original supported-media table positively covers Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds, giving 350 ordinary sheets when the feeds contain the selected size.
The additional 550-sheet tray is optional. A 900-sheet family maximum therefore does not satisfy an included-capacity requirement for this standard machine. If separate feeds hold different stocks, capacity for one particular size is only what is actually loaded for that task.
Align paper guides to the stack and keep paper below the full indicators. The original cassette instructions warn against envelopes and labels in tray 2; those use tray 1. For an envelope job, choose the actual size, Envelope type and Manual feed source in the compatible driver, then load up to ten supported envelopes face up with the short postage end leading.
Manual duplex and optional private printing require different actions
For two-sided desktop output, use the supported driver's manual-duplex routine and follow the actual reload instructions. In the original OS X procedure, remove blank paper from tray 1, reload the printed stack with its printed side down and continue at the control panel when prompted. Check page order and orientation before committing a long report.
A driver option called two-sided printing does not install a turning mechanism. The exact original hardware column says automatic duplex is unavailable on M402n. Choose an equipped model when documents must print both sides without that operator step.
Job storage and private printing are conditional options. The original manual requires a dedicated USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16GB free space in the rear host port, plus a supported driver; the drive is formatted during setup. If using HP's Universal Print Driver, the original minimum is version 5.9.0. Removing the storage disables the feature, so the normal included package does not qualify for essential PIN release.
Supplies, document scope and placement
The documented US replacement cartridges are 26A CF226A, approximately 3,100 pages, and 26X CF226X, approximately 9,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 maker conditions. The exact M402n box specification separately lists an introductory approximately 1,500-page cartridge. It should not be counted as a new 3,100-page replacement, and actual remaining toner in a previously owned unit is unknown.
This is a print-only monochrome laser. It cannot scan paper originals, make standalone photocopies or send analog faxes. Software names do not supply those missing mechanisms. Select an MFP with the supported actual scan connection if document capture is part of the routine.
The closed body is approximately 15.0 by 14.06 by 8.5 inches, but extended trays and service access need more room. The current exact weight figure differs from the original manual's with-cartridge figure, so no unqualified weight guarantee is used. The M402n is sensible for prepared black-and-white documents and manual two-sided work; automatic print duplex or built-in wireless requirements point to an appropriately equipped alternative.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker one-sided black Letter rate up to 40 ppm, separately 38 A4 in original manual. Recommended monthly printing 750–4,000 versus separate 80,000 maximum duty. No independent speed test or two-sided rate inferred.
Paper handling
Included 100-sheet multipurpose tray 1 plus 250-sheet tray 2, total 350 ordinary 75-g/m² sheets. Original HP c04813259 table positively supports Letter/Legal/A4 in both feeds. Optional 550-sheet tray 3 is not included in the 350-sheet plan. Only tray 1 handles envelopes or labels; up to ten envelopes, face up with short postage end leading, actual Envelope type/size and Manual feed source in compatible driver. Ordinary cassette media 60–120 g/m²; tray 1 wider named range 60–175 g/m² does not make every type suitable for duplex.
Scanning arrangement
Exact monochrome print-only laser; no scanner, feeder, flatbed, standalone copier or fax. Print duplex and an app name containing All-in-One do not establish document capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact M402n includes USB 2.0 and Gigabit 10/100/1000 Ethernet; no included infrastructure radio or Wi-Fi Direct. Compatible desktop driver enables instructed envelope/manual-duplex routines. Separate supported same-subnet AirPrint/Mopria mobile printing is positively listed; no mobile manual-duplex or envelope-driver workflow borrowed.
Supplies and declared yields
US 26A CF226A replacement approximately 3,100 pages and 26X CF226X approximately 9,000, ISO/IEC 19752 maker declarations. Actual content changes yield; original supplied cartridges differ by suffix and must not be equated to every replacement. Current remaining toner and price per page unknown. Exact original M402n box lists an introductory approximately 1,500-page cartridge, not the 3,100-page supplied cartridge on other suffixes.
Software and support
Compatible HP computer driver needed for the documented desktop print routines. AirPrint/Mopria same-network mobile route is separate: original OS X manual explicitly warns two-sided options may not be available through AirPrint, so mobile plans do not borrow automatic duplex from the desktop driver. Included configuration does not qualify PIN release: job storage requires a separately purchased dedicated USB flash drive, original manual at least 16 GB free, a supported driver and optional setup/formatting. If UPD is used, original minimum is 5.9.0. No optional USB storage added to a normal plan. Retired cloud services named in old documents are not promised.
Electrical edition and setup
Reviewed exact US low-voltage 110–127-V 50/60-Hz configuration; separate 220–240-V option-code editions, explicitly not dual voltage. Current exact body 15.0×14.06×8.5 inches agrees with original 381×357×216 mm. Current exact weight 18.92 lb differs from original 19.6 lb with cartridges, so unqualified weight remains null. Current maximum depth 25 inches differs from original fully open 30.8 inches; closed dimensions do not guarantee complete operating/service clearance. Optional tray adds height and weight.
