Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible Ethernet desktop save color scans from a stack of Legal originals?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, the HP+ requirements accepted and the actual HP scan software configured. Legal fits the simplex feeder; reverse sides still need a manual separate pass.
Explore this need in the finder →Does automatic print duplex also provide automatic two-sided original scanning?
Fails. The exact 3G628E scanning table explicitly says duplex ADF scanning is not available. Print-side paper turning is a different function.
Explore this need in the finder →Can Legal originals be captured on the glass?
Fails. The exact documented glass maximum is 216×297 mm. Legal is supported by the feeder and paper input, not by this glass.
Explore this need in the finder →A simplex feeder within an HP+ office setup
The HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdwe suits a small office that produces black documents and captures mostly one-sided original batches. The documented US configuration includes copying, fax, automatic print duplex and a 50-sheet original feeder. Its deciding limitation is that the feeder does not automatically scan reverse sides. HP+ also imposes continuing operating conditions that should be accepted before choosing this exact e model.
HP marks 3G628E#BGJ discontinued. It requires an HP account, Internet access and exclusive use of Original HP Toner for the printer's life. This review concerns that documented configuration, without claiming current stock, measured reliability or compatibility with every future operating system.
Read the two kinds of duplex separately
Automatic print duplex turns paper for printed second sides. The exact scanner table, however, explicitly says duplex ADF scanning is unavailable. A two-sided agreement therefore needs separate manual passes and careful checking of page order. It cannot be treated as a single-pass document-capture appliance.
The feeder accepts Letter, Legal and A4 originals within its stated size range. The glass has a separate 216 by 297 mm maximum, supporting Letter and A4 but not Legal. Place suitable individual originals on the glass and use the feeder for longer supported documents; paper-input support does not enlarge either scanner route.
Color scanning remains available even though paper output is monochrome. That distinction matters when retaining colored annotations or stamps in a file. A black paper copy does not establish that the saved original must also be grayscale.
Verify delivery to the actual computer
The original guide describes Scan to Computer with installed HP software. Both devices must be connected and running, and the Windows software must be active. The panel workflow chooses the computer destination before sending the scan. On a network installation, a previously disabled Scan to Computer feature needs to be enabled again in the software.
USB computer scanning is specifically described, alongside Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi arrangements. A local USB connection does not cancel HP+ account or Internet requirements. Choose the actual installation route, make a representative scan and confirm that a complete readable file reaches the intended location.
The guide also describes configured network folders and browser-based Webscan. A shared folder needs the correct permissions, path and test; Webscan is initially disabled and can be restricted by an administrator. These options require deliberate setup, rather than following automatically from a working print queue.
One paper input and practical loading space
The included main tray holds up to 250 ordinary sheets or ten envelopes. Letter, Legal and A4 appear in the exact US paper list. The size-specific capacity is not separately established here, so the ordinary headline is not used as an unconditional 250-sheet promise for every selected medium.
Legal loading extends the input tray. Keep room for that extension, the output support, scanner lid and servicing when deciding where the machine can fit. Envelope jobs use their own face-up loading and paper-type settings, rather than the automatic plain-paper duplex routine.
Automatic print duplex is standard for compatible desktop use. Its exact supported paper-size subset is unconfirmed in this assessment. That allows a flexible paper requirement without promising an unsupported specific paper-and-duplex combination.
Mobile printing is another arrangement
AirPrint and Mopria support suitable shared-network printing. The original guide also positively describes true Wi-Fi Direct, where a supported device connects to the printer directly for output. Neither route automatically supplies the desktop software's computer-scanning controls.
Direct printing changes the local link, while the model's ongoing HP+ conditions remain. Ethernet also disables the infrastructure Wi-Fi connection in the original setup instructions, so choose and test the actual network arrangement. Analog fax has a separate telephone-line requirement and setup test; its hardware is not an Internet fax subscription.
Consider the recurring workload and toner commitment
HP declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and recommends 350 to 2,500 monthly pages. The 50,000-page duty maximum is a different figure. Check the actual electrical plate because the published specifications list regional voltage editions.
Instant Ink enrollment is optional and separate from the lifetime Original HP Toner condition. Match the correct US 138A or 138X replacements and distinguish their declared yields from the introductory cartridge. Choose this model for a verified simplex capture routine; frequent two-sided original batches justify comparing a documented automatic-duplex scanner.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
HP declares up to 35 one-sided Letter ppm. The recommended monthly range is 350–2,500 pages, distinct from the 50,000-page maximum duty figure. ADF color/black scan rates are separate from printed output.
Paper handling
One included main input holds up to 250 ordinary sheets or 10 envelopes. Letter, Legal and A4 printing are confirmed; an exact 250-sheet capacity for each selected size remains unestablished here. Legal loading extends the tray. Automatic print duplex is standard in compatible desktop use, while its exact paper-size subset is unconfirmed. Envelope loading and paper-type settings are a separate one-sided routine.
Scanning arrangement
The 50-sheet feeder is explicitly simplex, with no automatic duplex ADF. Its 148×210 to 216×356 mm range supports Letter, Legal and A4. The 216×297 mm glass supports Letter and A4, not Legal. Compatible HP desktop software saves color scans; network Scan to Computer must be enabled if previously disabled. A working print queue alone does not verify capture.
Computer and mobile connections
USB computer connection is documented in the original guide, separately from 10/100 Ethernet and dual-band infrastructure Wi-Fi. Ethernet disables the infrastructure Wi-Fi connection in the original routine. AirPrint/Mopria shared-network printing and true Wi-Fi Direct basic printing are separate plans. All arrangements retain the mandatory HP+ account, Internet and Original HP Toner conditions.
Supplies and declared yields
HP+ requires Original HP Toner for the printer’s life. Optional Instant Ink delivery can be cancelled separately, with HP original Standard/XL cartridges still required. US 138A W1380A declares about 1,500 pages and 138X W1380X about 4,000; the introductory cartridge declares about 1,000. The exact US page gives ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing yield conditions. No current cost is estimated.
Software and support
The original setup pairs the printer with an HP account through the portal. Actual Scan to Computer controls require installed running HP software; its USB route is enabled by default, while network capture can need re-enabling. Webscan requires administrator permission and explicit enablement. PIN/pull marketing alone does not establish the included private-release storage and workflow, so PIN capability remains unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US 3G628E#BGJ is discontinued. Account pairing and continuing Internet access are part of HP+ use. Separate 110–127 V and 220–240 V regional electrical editions are listed; actual unit mains compatibility remains unknown here. Body is 16.5×15.7×12.3 inches and 23.1 lb, cartridge basis unestablished. Allow tray, lid and service clearance. Analog fax needs a working suitable telephone line and setup test.
