LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw (CZ183A#BGJ; US configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A modest 250–2,000-page monthly office using compatible full HP computer software, one-sided feeder originals and an actual telephone line when fax is needed.

The main tradeoff

No automatic print or scan duplex. Legal originals need the ADF because the explicit original table limits the glass to Letter/A4. Legacy HP Wireless Direct is distinct from Wi-Fi Direct.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a wired computer scan one-sided color Legal documents through the included feeder?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible full HP scanning software, actual Ethernet setup and suitable originals in the 35-sheet simplex feeder. Legal uses the feeder, not the Letter/A4 glass.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the feeder automatically scan both faces of A4 originals over Wi-Fi?

Fails. The exact model specification explicitly says no duplex ADF scanning. The guide’s two-sided copying routine requires manually turning the glass original and returning the printed output.

Can a USB computer scan a full Legal original on the flatbed?

Fails the selected glass size. The original exact fw configuration limits the flatbed to Letter/A4, despite an inconsistent old store heading. Full Legal scanning needs the single-sided feeder.

An earlier office MFP for one-sided document routines

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw brings black-and-white printing, copying, color scanning and an analog fax together with USB, Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi. Its useful distinction is a 35-sheet document feeder that accepts Legal originals. Its main compromise is two-sided handling: print duplex is manual, and the feeder does not automatically capture both faces.

HP's exact US page identifies CZ183A#BGJ and explicitly marks it discontinued. This review concerns the documented US low-voltage configuration, 110–127 VAC at 60 Hz. Separate 220–240-V editions are not dual voltage. Check the actual option code, plate, condition and compatible software before choosing an earlier unit.

The three-inch color touchscreen controls the machine. It does not produce color paper output. A real color-scanning specification separately establishes color capture; those are different capabilities.

Choose the correct original path

The original guide's exact M127fw column limits the flatbed to Letter or A4. The old US shop feature list contains a conflicting Legal-size flatbed heading. This review follows the explicit original configuration table: use the glass for Letter/A4 and the documented 8.5-by-14-inch feeder for full Legal sheets.

The feeder supports up to 35 suitable originals, with a stated 16–24-lb media range. It is a single-sided route. Prepare loose sheets without staples, paper clips or correction material, load them face up and adjust the guides snugly. Photographs, fragile originals and small items belong on the glass. Remove any originals from the feeder when you want the glass used; the original routine gives the feeder priority.

For the glass, place the original face down at the rear-left corner, aligned with the markings. The original scanning instructions recommend keeping a Letter/A4 original's long edge along the left side. Use the compatible HP Scan application on Windows or Mac and save the resulting file. A print-only driver installation does not guarantee those scanning controls.

The exact US specification describes scan-to-email through HP software. It is not evidence of an independently configured SMTP sender at the panel. AirPrint also explicitly provides printing only in the original guide and cannot substitute for the computer scanning application.

Keep the input reserve and duplex work realistic

The single included paper input holds 150 ordinary sheets and supports Letter, Legal and A4. The 100-sheet face-down output bin is separate. There is no included second input to dedicate permanently to envelopes or forms.

When adding new paper, remove the existing stack and straighten it together with the new stock. The guide says not to fan it. Load ordinary paper face up with the top entering first and move the guides against the edges. Choose the actual paper size and type in the driver so a job's assumptions agree with the tray.

For Windows two-sided work, open the driver's Layout tab and choose the required manual-duplex binding. After the first half prints, return the output printed-side down and top edge first. Confirm at the computer and use the panel if prompted. The original Mac procedure uses the same return orientation, but requires the HP print driver; its manual control may be unavailable with AirPrint.

The guide's two-sided copying chapter is also a manual routine. It returns the printed output to the paper input and asks you to turn the original on the glass. Neither that chapter heading nor the presence of an ADF establishes automatic duplex scanning. If unattended two-sided handling is essential, select a model with the actual print duplexer or automatic duplex scanner you need.

Up to ten suitable envelopes can use the normal input. The orientation table specifies face up, top edge toward the right of the tray and postage end entering last. Select the envelope's real size and type and use a one-sided job.

Network printing has an older direct-wireless alternative

USB is a computer connection; the included network port is documented as Fast Ethernet 10/100. A generic shared-manual row mentions 10/100/1000, but the exact US interface specification takes priority here. Ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi provides another computer print/scan arrangement with the compatible full software.

For AirPrint, the original instructions put the Apple device and printer on the same wireless network. The exact US page establishes Ethernet networking as well, but mobile matching here stays with the explicitly described same-Wi-Fi arrangement. Mobile paper controls, input capacity and computer scanning are not borrowed into that route.

HP Wireless Direct is a separate older feature. Enable it through Wireless Menu and Wireless Direct Settings, then use a compatible client; the manual warns a firmware update may be required. It specifically permits AirPrint on supported Apple devices. This review keeps the original HP Wireless Direct name and does not label it Wi-Fi Direct or promise a retired HP cloud app remains available.

Fax uses its own telephone connection

The actual analog fax needs a telephone line connected to its fax input. HP recommends a dedicated analog line. Ethernet and Wi-Fi do not replace that cable or guarantee compatibility with a VoIP service.

Configure the date, time and fax header, including the sender's number and name. At the touchscreen choose Fax, enter the destination and start transmission, using the feeder or glass as appropriate. A separately attached extension phone or answering machine uses the telephone output. The M127fw does not borrow the integrated handset from the different fp configuration.

Check software, toner and working space

HP no longer supports Smart Install for this family and recommends the latest available support-site installation software. Verify today's exact operating-system and scanning support before committing to the earlier hardware. An administrator password protects settings; secure held-job PIN printing remains unconfirmed.

The exact US cartridge is HP 83A, CF283A, with a declared replacement average of about 1,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752 continuous printing. The original introductory cartridge is separately about 700 pages, not a promise about remaining toner.

HP rates one-sided black printing up to 21 Letter ppm, separately 20 A4 ppm. Recommended volume is 250–2,000 monthly pages, distinct from the 8,000-page maximum duty. The documented body is about 16.5 inches wide, 14.4 deep and 12.2 high, weighing 20 lb. Its stated maximum depth grows to 17.2 inches; leave further practical access for originals, the lid, cables and service.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US technical page declares up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm in black, original exact fw column separately 20 A4 ppm. Recommended 250–2,000 monthly pages differs from maximum 8,000 duty. Scanner 7 black/5 color ppm is not print speed. No measured performance claimed.

Paper handling

One included 150-sheet ordinary-paper input supports Letter/Legal/A4 in actual original size table. Separate 100-sheet output is not additional input. Remove/straighten old stock when adding paper, do not fan, load face up/top first and guides snug; actual driver size/type must match. Windows Layout manual duplex returns printed output down/top first, confirms computer OK and panel if prompted; Mac HP driver similarly returns printed down/top first and manual control may not appear in AirPrint. No automatic duplex. Manual two-sided copy routine turns original and returns printed output, not automatic scanner. Up to ten suitable envelopes, face up/top edge at right/postage last under original orientation table, one-sided only.

Scanning arrangement

The original exact fw column on physical page 13 explicitly limits the glass to Letter/A4 and positively says it scans in color. The US store feature heading Legal-size flatbed conflicts; the explicit original configuration controls glass support. Exact US support establishes an ADF maximum of 8.5×14 inches, a minimum of 6×4.5 inches, 35 sheets and 16–24-lb media, with no duplex ADF scanning. Letter, Legal and A4 fit that feeder range; the glass supports Letter/A4 only. There is no automatic or single-pass duplex capture. Original pages 49–50 describe compatible HP Scan computer file capture, and the full software package supports desktop scanning. Exact US scan-to-email is through HP software, not a proven autonomous SMTP sender at the panel. Load feeder originals face up and glass originals face down at the rear-left mark. The feeder takes priority if both are loaded; photos, fragile and small originals are excluded from the feeder.

Computer and mobile connections

The exact US included USB 2.0 computer interface, Fast Ethernet 10/100 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, together with actual scan drivers, establish compatible computer print/scan routes. The shared manual comparison says 10/100/1000; exact US 10/100 takes priority, with no Gigabit claim. Original page 41 requires the AirPrint client on the same wireless network and explicitly provides printing only, without USB or scanning. Original page 42 documents legacy HP Wireless Direct, possibly requiring a firmware update, and supports compatible Apple AirPrint clients. This legacy route is available only with a flexible connection choice; it is not tagged as Wi-Fi Direct. Generic support links mentioning Wi-Fi Direct do not establish that exact protocol. Mopria remains unconfirmed, and old HP ePrint cloud or app availability is not promised.

Supplies and declared yields

The exact US replacement is HP 83A, CF283A, declared at about 1,500 pages. The introductory cartridge is separately about 700 pages. Both declarations use ISO/IEC 19752 continuous printing. No actual remaining toner, higher-capacity sibling cartridge, current price or tested quality is claimed. One black cartridge provides monochrome paper output, while the independently documented scanner captures color.

Software and support

HP official notice c04782323 explicitly discontinues the Smart Install installation path for the M127 family and recommends the latest available support-site software. Historical OS and software lists require current exact compatibility checking. HP Scan, TWAIN and WIA in the full software are separate from a print-only driver. An administrator security password or generic secure-print link does not establish included held-job PIN release, which remains unknown. No HP+ lifetime policy is borrowed from newer we models.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact HP US CZ183A#BGJ is explicitly discontinued, requiring earlier opt-in. Documented US 110–127 VAC at 60 Hz is separate from 220–240-V editions; not dual voltage, check the actual plate and option code. Exact US body is 16.5×14.4×12.2 inches and 20 lb, with stated maximum depth 17.2 inches; allow further lid, original, cable and service access. The US box lists USB and phone cords. Analog fax requires the actual phone line and date/time/header setup; a dedicated analog line is recommended. Ethernet/VoIP substitution or the separate fp model handset is not assumed. No current-stock promise.
