LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw 4PA42A#BGJIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small-office setup that needs analog fax and computer-file capture but can turn two-sided originals manually.

The main tradeoff

Its 35-sheet feeder cannot scan both sides automatically, and the two-line display does not provide the related touchscreen models’ scan menus.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it scan single-sided Legal documents to a compatible computer over Wi-Fi and include fax for a 1,000-page monthly workload?

Yes, with full compatible scan software, appropriate analog phone setup and the 35-sheet simplex feeder.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will it automatically scan both sides of a stack?

No. Automatic print duplex is separate; the exact feeder specification says duplex scanning is unavailable.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the documented recurring workload support 5,000 printed pages every month?

That is beyond the 2,000-page recommended monthly upper limit, despite the larger maximum-duty figure.

Fax is included; automatic two-sided scanning is not

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw brings monochrome printing, color scanning, copying and analog fax into a small-office machine. Its automatic print duplexer can make two-sided output, while its document feeder scans one side at a time. That difference matters more than the general “all-in-one” label when deciding whether it fits your paperwork.

The US configuration is 4PA42A#BGJ, and HP identifies it as discontinued. An earlier example may still suit a compatible setup, but condition, software and remaining supplies deserve attention alongside the feature list. This assessment does not claim a hands-on speed test or a current offer.

Match the feeder to the originals, not the printer’s duplex setting

The 35-sheet feeder supports single-sided capture, including originals up to Legal size. Color scanning is available even though printed and copied output is black and white. For a two-sided document, plan to turn the original and manage the resulting page order yourself; selecting two-sided printing does not change the scanner hardware.

The operating guide also explains manual two-sided copying through the glass. That is a user-assisted procedure, not automatic duplex capture. If frequent two-sided originals are your main job, choose a machine whose actual scan route provides automatic duplex or single-pass capture instead.

Use a full computer installation for routine file capture

The original instructions document scanning from HP Scan on Windows and HP Easy Scan on compatible Mac systems. A user loads the original, selects the scan settings and saves the result as a file or sends it to an application. The intended computer needs suitable scanning software; successfully installing a printing driver does not prove that capture is ready.

USB, Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi provide the included computer connections. For an earlier machine, check the available full software for the computer you actually use. Historical operating-system lists and a broad compatibility heading do not mean that every listed system receives the same scan and fax components.

The M148fdw has a two-line display with physical fax and copy controls. Its guide reserves the email, network-folder and flash-drive scan menus for touchscreen models. Do not expect those related models’ panel workflows merely because the manual covers several machines.

Keep mobile printing and router-free printing distinct

AirPrint is a documented local-network printing route, with the printer and Apple device on the same subnet. Compatible Android printing through Mopria is described separately. Available mobile controls depend on the device, application and firmware, so desktop paper or scanning functions should not be assumed.

Wi-Fi Direct allows peer printing after the device joins the printer’s signal. It does not require the same router arrangement as infrastructure Wi-Fi, but it can interrupt the mobile device’s normal network connection. A connection PIN used to join that signal is not evidence of a stored private-print job waiting for release.

Paper capacity and recurring workload set the practical scale

The included ordinary-paper inputs total 260 sheets: ten in the priority tray and 250 in the main input. The shared loading instructions cover Letter, Legal and A4 automatic print duplex with matching media settings. Envelopes have separate loading rules and should not inherit the duplex assumptions used for ordinary sheets.

HP’s recurring recommendation is 200–2,000 printed pages monthly. The 20,000-page maximum duty number serves a different purpose. Likewise, a declared print speed is not the scanning rate, and neither predicts the time for an entire mixed fax, scan and print routine.

Check the complete earlier package before choosing it

Analog fax requires suitable telephone service, the appropriate cable and the documented setup. The physical fax keypad distinguishes this version from the non-fax M148dw. For placement, allow the expanded working space needed by paper supports, the scanner lid and cables rather than measuring only the closed body.

Toner and the imaging drum are separate supplies. A drum-life figure does not describe the toner remaining in a used cartridge. Verify the actual US electrical plate, current software route and surviving contents. The M148fdw fits straightforward black printing with fax and single-sided capture; a demanding two-sided scanning routine calls for a different feeder.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US technical field and original two-model insert specify 30 Letter / 28 A4 ppm; the generic 28-ppm feature tile is not substituted for Letter. Recurring recommendation is 200–2,000 pages, not maximum 20,000 duty.

Paper handling

Ten-sheet priority input plus 250-sheet main tray gives 260 ordinary sheets. Shared manual loading supports Letter, Legal and A4 automatic print duplex; use the correct size/type/Finishing settings. Envelopes have their separate supported sizes, orientation and ten-envelope ceiling; do not duplex them by assuming ordinary-paper rules.

Scanning arrangement

Exact HP specification explicitly says no duplex ADF scanning. The 35-sheet feeder takes simplex originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches; color capture is independent of monochrome output. Computer capture uses compatible full HP Scan/HP Easy Scan or actual TWAIN/WIA software, with a file-save procedure in the original guide. Exact flatbed-size boundary is not resolved here and is not admitted to a size-specific glass plan.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are included. US exact product declares 10/100 Ethernet, while the short shared insert says Gigabit; no Gigabit promise is made. Wi-Fi Direct is peer printing and separate from router Wi-Fi. AirPrint needs the same subnet; compatible Android Mopria print support is documented in the original guide. Mobile print routes do not inherit desktop scanning or exact paper controls.

Supplies and declared yields

Original introductory toner is rated about 1,000 pages; 94A CF294A and 94X CF294X replacements about 1,200/2,800. Separate 32A CF232A drum is about 23,000 under stated test assumptions, not a toner yield. Check remaining supplies and actual contents.

Software and support

M148fdw has a two-line LCD, alphanumeric fax keypad and physical controls. The original expressly reserves panel email/folder/flash-drive scan menus for touchscreen models, so those M227 menus are not borrowed. Full computer software includes scan components; a print-only installation does not establish capture. Historical software listings do not guarantee every present OS. Password-protected management and Direct connection PIN do not establish held-print PIN release.

Electrical edition and setup

US 4PA42A#BGJ is explicitly discontinued and low-voltage 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz. Body and expanded-space dimensions are separate: 15.9 × 16 × 12.3 inches closed versus 15.9 × 24.6 × 17.9 maximum; weight 20.7 lb. Fax is an analog device function, requiring appropriate line service and setup, not an Internet-fax guarantee.
