Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a Wi-Fi office print both sides automatically and scan one-sided Legal originals in color while keeping 350 ordinary sheets loaded?
Yes with compatible computer software and appropriate print media. The included 100-sheet and 250-sheet trays provide 350 ordinary sheets on the 75 gsm basis, and Legal originals fit the 50-sheet simplex feeder. The printer has automatic duplex hardware; the precise print-paper size still needs verification, so this preset leaves print size flexible. A 3000-page month is inside the stated 750–4000 recommended print range.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I place an entire Legal original on the glass and scan it to a USB-connected computer?
No. The exact detailed glass limit is 216 x 297 mm, covering Letter and A4 rather than Legal. The separate 216 x 356 mm feeder limit must not be transferred to the flatbed.
Explore this need in the finder →Does automatic print duplex mean the dw can scan both sides of Letter originals in one pass?
No. Its exact variant table provides a simplex feeder and explicitly excludes the dual-head single-pass hardware. Choose a separately verified duplex-scanning model for an unattended two-sided original stack.

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428dw is a monochrome laser printer, copier and color scanner with USB, Gigabit Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi. This review follows the W1A28A identity in HP's US product record, which marks it discontinued. It suits black-and-white office output and mostly one-sided scanning.
The dw's automatic duplex function turns printed paper, not original documents in the feeder. It also lacks fax. Those distinctions matter more than a generic family description: M428fdn and M428fdw equipment must not be added to this model simply because they share a manual.
Legal scanning uses the feeder rather than the glass
The included feeder accepts up to 50 suitable originals and scans one side at a time. Its documented size range reaches 216 x 356 mm, covering Legal as well as Letter and A4. The detailed flatbed limit is separately 216 x 297 mm, so a Legal original does not fit the glass in full.
Use the glass for a suitable bound or fragile original within its size limit. For a feeder stack, straighten the pages and adjust the guides before scanning. A software prompt to turn originals manually is a useful assisted routine, but it does not provide unattended duplex capture.
For Windows, HP's original procedure opens HP Printer Assistant, selects Scan a Document or Photo, adjusts settings and starts the scan. On a compatible Mac, HP Easy Scan provides a separate load, scan and save routine. Confirm the actual operating system and full scanner software rather than assuming a print-only driver includes every scan control.
Shared-folder delivery has an explicit setup step
A wired or wireless network can support computer printing and configured scan delivery. For a shared folder, the network administrator needs the computer's destination path and suitable credentials. The folder must actually be shared and accessible on the same network.
The Windows wizard can create or select that share and offers a Save and Test step. The embedded web interface provides another configuration method. A successful print job does not prove that folder permissions and scan delivery are already working.
AirPrint and Mopria are documented for appropriate local-network printing. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate route: connect the mobile device directly to the printer's wireless network before sending the job. Check the application's available settings and keep computer scan delivery separate from a mobile print capability.
Its standard paper supply is 350 sheets
The base has a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet drawer, both normal paper stacks on a 75 gsm basis. Suitable Letter, Legal and A4 fit their documented ranges. The 900-sheet headline requires a separately purchased 550-sheet third tray.
Use the compatible driver to select automatic two-sided printing and suitable media. Check the supported duplex size for a specific job rather than applying the general feed range to every two-sided setting. Envelopes use the multipurpose tray only, in batches up to ten, with the correct envelope size and type selected.
HP recommends 750–4000 printed pages monthly, separately from its 80,000-page duty ceiling. Its declared one-sided Letter rate is 40 pages/min; A4 and duplex image rates are different figures. These are manufacturer declarations, not speed tests performed for this article.
PIN release needs storage that is not in the base arrangement
The genuine Personal Job routine can hold a document for a release PIN. However, the manual requires a dedicated USB 2.0 storage device with at least 16 GB free in the rear host port. The printer formats it, and the driver must recognize job storage. Removing that drive disables the feature.
This is different from a PIN protecting a scan-folder shortcut, and it is different from the front USB socket used for ordinary files. Check that the storage and compatible driver are present before depending on confidential release.
Finally, allow room to open the scanner and paper paths, beyond the closed body's approximately 16.5 by 15.3 inches. Check the actual electrical label and regional toner identity. A European 59A or 220–240 V data sheet does not establish the supplies or power edition of every US-listed unit.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
HP explicitly declares 40 one-sided Letter pages/min and 38 A4 pages/min for this model group. These are distinct from A4 duplex image rates and feeder scan rates. The recommended printed volume is 750–4000 pages/month; 80,000 is the maximum duty ceiling, not the suggested monthly routine. Actual job completion depends on the document, connection, software and media. No speed or quality measurement from this site is claimed.
Paper handling
The included 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and 250-sheet Tray 2 hold 350 ordinary sheets on a 75 gsm basis. Both documented custom ranges include suitable Letter, Legal and A4; the standard unattended capacity is 350 at each of those sizes. The 550-sheet third tray is optional, so 900 sheets is an expanded maximum. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to 10, with the proper size, Envelope type and orientation. Automatic print duplex is included, but an exact supported duplex-size list is not established in the read sections; verify the driver and media requirements for a particular size. A general feed-size range does not establish every duplex size.
Scanning arrangement
The exact dw has a 50-sheet simplex document feeder and a color flatbed scanner. The detailed scannable-area row gives 216 x 297 mm for the glass and 102 x 152 through 216 x 356 mm for the feeder. Suitable Letter and A4 fit the glass; Legal uses the feeder. The original variant matrix and exact data sheet explicitly exclude automatic two-sided feeder scanning on dw. The fdn/fdw single-pass hardware is not included. A manual second-side prompt or generic family duplex chapter does not turn it into a duplex scanner.
Computer and mobile connections
Included computer connections are USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. Use the full compatible scanner software for computer scanning: HP Scan through HP Printer Assistant on Windows, or HP Easy Scan on a supported Mac; load the glass or feeder, select settings and save the result. For network-folder delivery, configure an enabled shared computer folder, path, credentials and a successful Save and Test through the wizard or EWS. Wired and wireless network interfaces are ordinary alternative setups. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate mobile print route, with the phone connected to the printer network; its print procedure does not establish computer scan delivery.
Supplies and declared yields
Check the regional cartridge identity before purchasing supplies. The reviewed EMEA data sheet lists 59A/59X and an approximately 3000-page initial cartridge on the declared ISO/IEC 19752 continuous-printing basis. The HP US support body separately distinguishes 58A for the Americas, 59A for EMEA and 76A for Asia-Pacific. The EMEA cartridge or mains specification is not assigned to every US-listed unit. Verify the actual label and supported local supplies; no current stock, remaining toner or cost per page is inferred.
Software and support
AirPrint and Mopria are documented for suitable shared-network printing; Wi-Fi Direct is separately documented for the wireless dw. Computer-driver duplex and scanner functions are not promised as universal mobile-app options. The genuine Personal Job PIN routine requires a dedicated USB 2.0 storage device with at least 16 GB free, installed in the rear host port, formatted by the printer and recognized in the driver. Removing it disables job storage. That added storage is not an included base component, so base PIN release is false. A scan-folder access PIN is different from holding a print job for release. Historical cloud names are not promises of a service operating today.
Electrical edition and setup
HP marks exact US W1A28A discontinued. The user guide gives closed body dimensions of approximately 16.5 x 15.3 x 12.7 inches and 28.4 lb with cartridges. Its 12.9 kg cartridge-included basis is retained separately from the data sheet's 12.6 kg value without that explicit basis. The fully opened guide dimensions reach 17.8 inches wide, 33 inches deep and 22.7 inches high; optional tray installation changes height and weight. Separate regional electrical editions exist, so check the unit label. The EMEA 220–240 V table does not establish US mains compatibility.
