Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can an Ethernet office scan both sides of Legal originals in one pass, print Legal duplex and include fax with 600 ordinary input sheets?
Qualifies with earlier models enabled, compatible full computer software or a configured network destination and suitable telephone service. Keep the rear output closed for print duplex; Legal scanning uses the feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I scan an entire Legal original on the glass over USB?
Fails. The glass is Letter/A4 length. The longer feeder route does not establish a Legal flatbed.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard dn include Wi-Fi computer printing?
Fails. The exact dn is wired; wireless networking requires additional hardware and is not counted in this base configuration.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired monochrome office station with single-pass capture
The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521dn combines black printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax with a substantial ordinary-paper supply. Its 50-page dual-head feeder captures both sides in one pass. It suits a prepared wired office handling two-sided incoming paperwork, while its lack of included Wi-Fi and shorter flatbed are important reasons to compare another configuration.
The assessed US package is discontinued A8P79A#BGJ. Its documented low-voltage arrangement is 110–127 VAC at 50/60 Hz; regional higher-voltage editions are separate. HP identifies the unit as FCC Class A commercial equipment. Check the actual plate, current software, accessories and condition before choosing an earlier example.
HP declares up to 42 monochrome Letter pages per minute, separately 40 ppm on A4. The recurring print recommendation is 2,000–6,000 pages monthly, while 75,000 is maximum duty. These figures describe published limits and rates rather than an editorial speed test.
Legal originals fit the feeder, not the glass
The original comparison confirms a 50-page feeder with an 8.5-by-14-inch maximum and automatic duplex scanning. The exact product sheet independently describes its single-pass, dual-head mechanism. Letter, Legal and A4 feeder originals are supported. The flatbed stops at approximately 8.5 by 11.7 inches, so a complete Legal sheet requires the feeder.
Color capture remains available even though printed pages and copies are monochrome. The operating guide specifies up to 300 dpi color capture through the feeder, versus up to 600 dpi color or 1,200 dpi monochrome on the glass. A different older sheet gives a broader glass resolution; this assessment retains the narrower operating-guide distinction instead of promising every setting everywhere.
Compatible full computer software provides HP Scan and documented TWAIN or WIA acquisition. On the original Mac route, the user scans the pages, then uses Send to save a file. A minimum driver installation may expose fewer acquisition components. Verify the complete software arrangement on the actual computer, not merely whether a print queue appears.
The touchscreen can deliver to a configured folder or email
Network-folder scanning is a separate documented route. First use the setup wizard or Embedded Web Server to prepare the destination, then run Save and Test. The printer needs an accessible shared path, suitable access permissions and the credentials required by the actual network.
For the job, load the glass or feeder, choose Scan to Network Folder, select the prepared folder and inspect the settings before starting. This procedure expressly accepts both original paths; it does not need to borrow a desktop application's feeder settings.
Email delivery instead needs a configured SMTP server and any required user ID and password. Save and Test verifies the prepared profile. The scanned file arrives as an attachment, rather than through direct USB acquisition. A PIN protecting an outgoing email profile is not evidence that printed jobs can be held for PIN release.
600 supplied sheets and a rear-bin duplex restriction
The standard inputs hold 100 plus 500 ordinary sheets, rated at 75 g/m², 20 lb. Both accept Letter, Legal and A4, and the operating instructions explicitly support those sizes for automatic print duplex. The optional extra 500-sheet tray is excluded from the supplied count, as are output bins and the original feeder.
The rear output bin changes the paper path. Open it for the documented face-up route when appropriate, but close it for automatic duplex: opening that bin makes the duplexer unavailable. Do not open or close it while a job is printing. The guide's rear-bin capacity is 50 sheets, differing from the older product sheet's 100; neither figure is extra blank-paper input.
Follow the actual preprinted-paper orientation for simplex or duplex. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten, face up with the short postage end entering first. Adjust guides without bending the paper, stay below the fill line and select the correct size and media type. Envelopes do not inherit ordinary-paper duplex support.
Connections, supplies and placement finish the decision
Computer USB and Gigabit Ethernet are included; wireless networking is an accessory question. AirPrint and Mopria can print through a suitable shared local network, without adding a Wi-Fi radio to this dn. Those mobile routes do not establish full computer scanning, exact media capacity or desktop finishing controls.
Analog fax needs appropriate telephone service and setup. The original box lists CE255A toner around 6,000 pages; CE255X replacement is declared around 12,500 under ISO/IEC 19752. Actual yields vary, and neither original figure reveals remaining toner in a particular offered unit.
The closed body is approximately 18.3 by 18.3 by 20 inches and 52.7 pounds, with much greater depth and height needed when opened. Choose the M521dn for its documented wired capture and paper routines, allowing access for loading, scanner use, supplies and cables.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 42 monochrome Letter ppm, separately 40 A4 ppm. Recommended monthly printing 2,000–6,000 pages versus 75,000 maximum duty. Original sheet scan rates of 21 black/15 color Letter ppm and 36 black/14 color duplex ipm count another operation; exact later support black scan speed differs. No review measurement or substituted copy rate.
Paper handling
Included 100 plus 500 ordinary sheets at 75-g/m², 20-lb basis, totaling 600 for Letter/Legal/A4. Optional additional 500-sheet feeder excluded. Actual original size ticks and Windows/Mac instructions expressly support Letter/Legal/A4 automatic print duplex. Rear output must be closed for duplex; opening it disables the duplexer. Guide rear output holds 50, versus older sheet 100, and neither is blank input. Preprinted simplex/duplex orientations differ. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten, face up/short postage end first with actual size/type selected; no envelope duplex promise.
Scanning arrangement
Exact dn column confirms 50-page automatic duplex feeder with max 8.5 × 14 inches; original exact product sheet positively calls it single-pass dual-head. Letter/Legal/A4 feeder capture and Letter/A4 glass supported; glass maximum about 8.5 × 11.7 inches, not Legal. Operating guide specifies color ADF up to 300 dpi, color glass up to 600 and monochrome glass up to 1,200; older sheet broader glass resolution is retained as a difference. Full compatible HP Scan/TWAIN/WIA computer files are documented. Actual network-folder and email job procedures explicitly accept glass or feeder, with destination setup completed first.
Computer and mobile connections
Included computer USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet; dn wireless column is blank while dw is marked, and exact support expressly says Wireless No. Optional wireless servers are excluded despite the old brochure first-page mislabeled standard-connectivity line. Local AirPrint/Mopria need a suitable shared network and applicable firmware. Mobile print routes do not inherit desktop acquisition, precise input capacity or finishing controls. Telephone line and separate host USB are distinct from computer networking.
Supplies and declared yields
US original box lists CE255A black approximately 6,000 pages. Replacement CE255A approximately 6,000 or CE255X approximately 12,500, ISO/IEC 19752 maker-declared basis, actual yields vary. Neighboring M525 higher-yield figures are not substituted. Original Mac/Windows bundles may include Readiris OCR; this is software, not proof of embedded OCR hardware. Remaining toner and live cost per page unknown.
Software and support
Full software offers HP Scan/TWAIN/WIA; minimum software is WIA-only according to the original guide. Mac HP Scan finishes through Send/save to file. Network folder and email require active network and configured EWS/wizard profiles, with Save and Test. Email needs SMTP server and authentication as applicable, delivering attachments. Outgoing-profile PIN and management password are not print-job PIN release, which remains unconfirmed. Historical software lists require current compatibility checks; no retired cloud-service availability is promised.
Electrical edition and setup
Discontinued exact US A8P79A#BGJ reviewed in documented low-voltage 110–127 VAC, 50/60-Hz configuration, corroborated by original North American sheet; higher-voltage edition separate, actual plate required. Closed body 18.3 × 18.3 × 20 inches, maximum 18.3 × 35.4 × 29.5; 52.7 lb has unstated cartridge basis. Older brochure 22.3-kg parenthesis does not convert consistently and is not substituted. FCC Class A commercial equipment. Fax requires suitable telephone service and setup, separate from IP connections.
