A useful fit for

A small wired monochrome queue within 250–2,000 recommended monthly pages using a current compatible driver or firmware-compatible same-network AirPrint.

The main tradeoff

No scanner, fax or standard wireless. Automatic driver duplex is documented, but its precise paper-size list and mobile duplex controls remain unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can P1606dn provide USB automatic duplex with 260 included sheets for 2,000 monthly pages when paper size is flexible?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible driver with automatic duplex enabled. The mechanism is positively documented; this size-flexible answer does not promise a specific automatic-duplex paper size.

Does Legal input support by itself establish automatic Legal duplex in this research?

Fails the selected exact duplex-size essential. Legal input is confirmed, but the guide warns that only some driver sizes duplex automatically and a separate exact duplex-size list was not established.

Can a firmware-compatible P1606dn print Letter through AirPrint on its wired network with 260 sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled when suitable AirPrint firmware is installed and the mobile device reaches the Ethernet-connected printer on the same LAN/subnet. This does not require a built-in Wi-Fi radio.

A wired monochrome printer with automatic duplex hardware

The HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn is an earlier print-only laser for a small office sharing ordinary black-and-white documents. HP's exact US page identifies CE749A#BGJ and marks it discontinued. This review covers its documented 110–127-volt, 60-Hz configuration. USB and built-in 10/100 Ethernet are standard, along with automatic two-sided printing.

The supported automatic-duplex mechanism is positively documented in both the exact product specifications and original user guide. Its precise supported-size list is a separate question: the guide warns that only certain driver media sizes work automatically but does not enumerate a separate duplex-size table in the material read. This review therefore confirms the mechanism without promising automatic duplex for every size the input trays accept.

Two included feeds provide 260 ordinary sheets

The main input holds 250 sheets and the priority slot holds ten at the guide's 75 g/m² basis. The supported-size table checks Letter, Legal and A4 in both feeds. Standard capacity is consequently 260 ordinary sheets for those sizes when the feeds are loaded and configured appropriately.

The priority slot is useful for a small different-stock job without replacing the main stack. For a single envelope or other supported special medium, the guide directs the user to that slot. Select the correct size and media type and use stock approved for a laser fuser. A sheet physically fitting a tray is not enough to approve every special-paper routine.

For computer automatic duplex, the Windows instructions require Allow Automatic Duplexing in Device Settings, followed by the two-sided option in the print dialog. The Mac instructions use the Layout menu and binding choice. These controls depend on a compatible actual driver. Verify the particular paper size in that driver; manual duplex remains the documented alternative for sizes unavailable automatically.

AirPrint can use Ethernet without adding a wireless radio

USB serves a directly connected computer, while the included Fast Ethernet interface serves the shared wired queue. HP lists an external wireless print server as an optional accessory. It is not counted as included Wi-Fi, and there is no established built-in Wi-Fi Direct route.

The exact current HP support record lists AirPrint and explicitly says a firmware upgrade may be required for AirPrint or HP ePrint compatibility. Confirm that the actual unit has suitable firmware and that the mobile device can reach the Ethernet-connected printer through the same local network. The phone can use the network's wireless access point while the printer remains wired; this does not give the printer a Wi-Fi radio.

The AirPrint route is kept separate from computer-driver duplex controls whose availability was not established in that mobile routine. A named Mopria arrangement and secure document PIN-release routine were not established. An embedded web interface or a network password is not substituted for either feature. Check current software support rather than treating the old CD's operating-system list as a present guarantee.

Use the recommended monthly range and check the actual machine

HP rates one-sided output up to 26 Letter pages per minute, separately 25 A4. Those are maker ratings, not our measurements or automatic-duplex throughput. The recommended monthly volume is 250 to 2,000 pages. The separate 8,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle is not treated as the recurring recommendation.

The exact US product identifies CE278A replacement toner. HP's 78A cartridge declaration gives approximately 2,100 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. That replacement figure does not establish the remaining toner in an installed cartridge. The package lists an introductory cartridge, but its exact included yield is not assigned here.

Request configuration and supplies information, inspect sample output and test both the intended connection and a real two-sided job with the chosen driver and paper. The machine has no scanner, automatic document feeder, paper-original copier or fax. A software copy-count setting merely repeats a computer file.

The exact US body dimensions are about 15.24 inches wide, 11.18 deep and 9.69 high, weighing 15.4 pounds. The maximum operating dimensions extend farther, so allow loading and service clearance beyond the closed cabinet. Check the actual voltage label because the separate 220–240-volt edition is not universal-voltage hardware. A complete P1606dn can fit a defined earlier wired monochrome workflow when its current driver, firmware and confirmed paper routine meet the work.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 26 one-sided Letter pages per minute, separately 25 A4. No measured or automatic-duplex rate. Recommended 250–2,000 monthly pages is distinct from 8,000 maximum monthly duty.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet main feed plus ten-sheet priority slot at 75 g/m²; both positively support Letter/Legal/A4, 260 included ordinary sheets. Original guide directs one envelope to priority slot and correct laser media/type settings. Computer-driver automatic duplex mechanism is positively documented, but its separate exact-size list was not established; do not borrow all input sizes as duplex sizes.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only monochrome hardware, no scanner glass, document feeder, copier or fax. Software copy counts do not capture a paper original.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard USB 2.0 or built-in 10/100 Fast Ethernet computer printing. AirPrint uses suitably updated firmware and reachable same LAN/subnet through Ethernet; no standard Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. Optional external wireless print server is excluded. Automatic computer-driver duplex is documented separately from unknown mobile duplex controls.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US product replacement CE278A, HP 78A declared approximately 2,100 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. Included introductory yield and installed remaining toner unassigned; no cost-per-page inference.

Software and support

Current exact HP support says a firmware upgrade may be required for AirPrint/HP ePrint. Use actual compatible driver; Windows requires Allow Automatic Duplexing in Device Settings. Guide warns only certain driver sizes support automatic duplex but does not enumerate a separate exact list. Mopria and secure document PIN release unestablished.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US CE749A#BGJ reviewed 110–127 VAC, 60 Hz configuration, separate from 220–240 VAC, 50 Hz. Check actual rating label. Closed body 15.24 W × 11.18 D × 9.69 H in, 15.4 lb. Maximum published 15.24 × 18.16 × 10.04 in indicates additional operating clearance. USB cable not assumed included.
