magicolor 4650DN (U.S. 120V configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Compatible USB or Ethernet desktop color output using the DN built-in duplex path and exact paper-source limits.

The main tradeoff

The 350-sheet total applies to Letter/A4, while confidential release and several direct-file functions require optional storage.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can compatible wired 4650DN automatically duplex Legal with 100 included ordinary sheets?

Yes. The exact DN includes the duplexer and the US original names Legal at 60–90 gsm. Its included Legal source is the 100-sheet multipurpose tray.

Does its 350-sheet combined input provide 350 included Legal sheets?

No. The included 250-sheet main cassette ends at 297 mm. Legal uses only the 100-sheet multipurpose source unless an optional feeder is installed.

Are four-digit secured jobs included without its optional hard disk?

No. The actual guide explicitly makes Proof/Print and its password-protected saved jobs dependent on the optional HDD.

The DN includes the automatic duplex mechanism

The Konica Minolta magicolor 4650DN is an earlier color laser printer for compatible wired computer output. Its DN suffix identifies the built-in automatic duplex unit, which the EN sibling does not supply. The actual operating chapter independently confirms that distinction.

This remains a printing-only machine. There is no document scanner, copier or telephone fax. Automatic two-sided printing therefore should not be confused with the ability to capture both sides of an original, and network connectivity does not turn the printer into an MFP.

Legal duplex has a smaller included paper reserve

The US manufacturer brochure explicitly approves ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 for the duplexer, with its own 60–90 gsm paper condition. Suitable two-sided Legal output is therefore a documented DN function rather than an inference from a broad paper list.

The included sources are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 250-sheet main cassette. Letter and A4 can use both, giving 350 sheets. The main cassette's actual length ends at 297 mm, so Legal uses the multipurpose source and has only 100 included sheets.

The optional lower feeder can add a Legal-capable source, but it is not part of the ordinary package. A supported duplex size does not make every cassette accept that size or allow an optional feeder to count toward included capacity.

Match the driver to the actual material

The original loading chapter gives different orientations for the multipurpose source and cassette, along with size and media-type settings. Follow the named route rather than assuming that identical paper should be loaded in the same direction everywhere.

Envelopes, labels, thick stock and glossy material do not receive the ordinary-paper duplex approval. Use the appropriate one-sided routine and suitable laser-compatible construction. The guide warns against continuously using the printer exclusively for a special material, even when occasional jobs are supported.

Computer USB and the host socket serve different jobs

Computer USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet and parallel are included interfaces. Compatible PCL and PostScript desktop drivers provide the documented computer-printing route. Check the intended operating system and software before depending on this earlier model.

The separate USB host port supports camera or direct-file functions with their own prerequisites. The brochure's detailed notes require a hard disk for direct XPS, and a disk or CompactFlash for direct PDF, JPEG and TIFF. A visible socket does not establish unrestricted storage-free document printing.

Secured printing needs the hard disk

The actual guide makes the Proof/Print menu conditional on an optional hard disk. A secured job from the driver then requires its four-digit password before release. The ordinary memory configuration is not credited with that disk-dependent confidential workflow.

Declare installed memory and storage correctly in the driver. The CompactFlash adapter and its exclusion of simultaneous HDD installation are also separate conditions. Several features appearing in a shared menu should not be treated as evidence that every accessory is installed.

Use the physical and workload figures carefully

The US brochure gives the printer's body dimensions and separates bare, loaded and shipping masses. Allow additional room for the extended multipurpose source, ventilation and open service panels during normal use. Its loaded DN value differs from the preserved operating guide's loaded handling warning, so this assessment avoids choosing a single weight from the conflicting editions.

The 90,000-page monthly figure is maximum duty, not a recommended interval. Starter toner, replacement toner and imaging units have separate declarations and conditions. Verify the electrical label, driver, supplies and service access before relying on a particular machine.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The exact US maker brochure declares 25 ppm color/mono without explicit Letter simplex labeling. The indexed guide rate cell merges A4/Letter columns ambiguously, so strict Letter fields remain unknown. The 90000-page monthly figure is explicitly maximum duty, not a recommended interval.

Paper handling

The DN includes automatic duplex, unlike EN. Actual guide confirms the built-in mechanism and plain-paper restrictions; US brochure positively names Letter, Legal and A4 for duplex at 60–90 gsm. Included input is 100 multipurpose plus 250 main cassette. Legal is accepted only in multipurpose, giving 100 included Legal sheets versus 350 Letter/A4. A 500-sheet lower feeder is optional.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet and parallel use compatible desktop PCL/PostScript software. The USB 1.1 host port is distinct from computer USB. No native AirPrint, Mopria or included wireless is established from Bonjour or other network protocol names.

Supplies and declared yields

US brochure distinguishes 3000-page CMYK in-box toner from 4000/8000 replacements at 5% Letter/A4 coverage, with separate imaging units and waste-toner container. These are not asserted ISO yields, measured costs or monthly workload recommendations.

Software and support

Actual guide Proof/Print requires an optional HDD and describes four-digit password release of secured jobs. Ordinary 256 MB RAM does not establish that optional feature. Direct XPS needs HDD; direct PDF/JPEG/TIFF needs HDD or CompactFlash, whose adapter and mutual exclusion with HDD are separate prerequisites.

Electrical edition and setup

Actual US original brochure independently specifies a 120 V 50/60 Hz version and US manufacturer address. Body is 18.5 × 21.1 × 15.2 inches. Brochure DN loaded mass 79.1 lb differs from the indexed operating guide 37 kg/81.5 lb loaded warning, so a single loaded weight remains unknown. Keep machine level with supplies installed and use appropriate moving help and service clearance.
