ECOSYS M3540idnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired or USB office needing Legal originals, automatic two-sided scanning, copying and monochrome output in the same machine.

The main tradeoff

Wi-Fi, additional drawers and the SD card for HyPAS applications are optional. The reversing feeder is not single-pass, and the named maximum duty is not a recommended workload.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a USB desktop workflow combine monochrome duplex printing with Legal flatbed and automatic two-sided color scanning?

Yes, with the documented compatible USB scan/print drivers. Both scanner inputs cover Legal; the automatic duplex feeder is reversing, rather than single-pass.

Does the 75-sheet duplex feeder meet a single-pass requirement?

No. The original sheet expressly identifies a reversing automatic document processor.

Can the standard package supply Wi-Fi and 2600 included sheets?

No. Wireless and extra drawers are optional; the standard input supply totals 600 sheets.

A document-focused MFP with color scanning

The Kyocera ECOSYS M3540idn combines monochrome printing with copying, color scanning and fax hardware in its documented office configuration. Its main appeal is handling a variety of office originals while keeping printed output black and white. A color touchscreen and color scanner do not provide color printing.

This is a useful distinction when a team distributes scanned color documents but prints mainly contracts, forms and correspondence. If color handouts are essential, move to a color output engine. If monochrome is sufficient, the more relevant questions are how originals enter the scanner and how the computer will connect.

The Legal scanner limit is supported for both inputs

The original American sheet gives a 75-sheet reversing automatic document processor and explicitly lists originals through Legal. It independently gives the scanner glass an 8.5×14-inch limit. This matters when a Legal original cannot go through the feeder: Legal printing alone would not prove the same size fits on the glass.

The feeder automatically processes both sides by reversing the original. That is a genuine automatic duplex scan routine, but it is different from scanning both sides in one pass. Use the correct feeder weight and handling instructions for loose sheets, and place appropriate individual originals on the glass instead of forcing every document through the automatic path.

USB computer scanning is documented, Wi-Fi is optional

The sheet identifies both USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet in its scan-connectivity section, alongside compatible TWAIN/WIA and other documented scanning functions. A direct USB desktop arrangement can therefore be considered for computer scanning, subject to the exact supported driver and operating system.

For a shared office, Ethernet also enables configured network destinations such as an SMB folder or email. Those destinations need their own permissions and network setup. The optional IB-51 wireless interface should not be mistaken for included Wi-Fi. AirPrint is documented for a compatible network arrangement; it is not a feature added to a USB-only cable connection by selecting a mobile-print requirement.

Keep the standard paper package separate from expansion

The included input arrangement totals 600 sheets: a 500-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The much larger 2,600-sheet maximum needs up to four optional PF-320 drawers. Check the machine actually being offered, rather than assuming an expandable configuration means all the drawers come with it.

The ordinary-paper paths and automatic print-duplex unit are specified through Legal, with different permissible stock weights. The multipurpose tray provides an envelope routine, but envelopes are not ordinary-paper duplex media. Choosing the correct paper source and media setting remains part of everyday operation.

A touchscreen helps navigation without including every application

The seven-inch color touchscreen gives the operator a larger control surface than a small text display. Consider the people making regular copies and scans, and whether the panel's workflow suits them. Screen size alone does not tell you whether a particular business integration is ready to run.

The sheet's HyPAS application footnote requires an optional SD card. Named applications also need a suitable present-day setup, rather than simply appearing in a historical brochure. Private Print is mentioned, but the precise PIN-release procedure has not been established in this assessment, so that stricter questionnaire requirement is not assigned from the feature name alone.

Compare speed, workload and installed size honestly

Kyocera declares 42 pages per minute on Letter, 33 on Legal and 40 on A4 for the stated one-sided output conditions. Duplex scanner images per minute describe a different process. These manufacturer figures are useful for comparing like conditions, but they are not our measurements of real-world jobs.

The 150,000-page maximum duty is also different from a recommended monthly workload. No positive recommended monthly ceiling is established in the read sheet. Check supplies and service needs against the actual unit's condition instead of treating either the duty number or a long-life-component claim as proof of suitability.

The reviewed body measures 18.7×17.9×22.6 inches and weighs 48.5lb. Leave room for open trays, the feeder, cables and maintenance. The reviewed American electrical configuration is 120V/60Hz; other-voltage versions are separately listed. Choose the M3540idn for its documented Legal scanning and wired MFP functions, then verify the exact electrical version, installed accessories and current software before buying.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker-declared one-sided print/copy rates: 42 ppm Letter, 33 ppm Legal, 40 ppm A4. Scanner rates are separate, with duplex feeder operation using a reversing path.

Paper handling

Standard 500-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet multipurpose tray; 600 included sheets. 2600-sheet maximum needs up to four optional PF320 drawers. Both stated ordinary-paper paths and duplex unit support through Legal with their specified weights.

Scanning arrangement

Color and monochrome scanning; 75-sheet standard reversing automatic document processor, through Legal; glass explicitly 8.5 × 14 in. USB 2 and Ethernet are stated scan-connectivity paths, with compatible TWAIN/WIA/WSD or configured network destinations as appropriate.

Computer and mobile connections

USB computer interface and Gigabit Ethernet are standard. IB51 wireless LAN is optional. AirPrint belongs to the compatible network setup and is not borrowed into USB-only use.

Supplies and declared yields

ECOSYS design uses separate toner and long-life imaging components. This read sheet does not establish the exact current regional supply price or the remaining service life of a particular machine.

Software and support

Seven-inch touchscreen; HyPAS applications require the separately specified optional SD card and suitable application setup. Named historical software and OS support are not universal current compatibility promises. Private Print is named but its exact PIN-release routine has not been established here.

Electrical edition and setup

Reviewed 120 V/60 Hz/8.4 A configuration; 220–240 V versions listed separately. Body 18.7 × 17.9 × 22.6 in and 48.5 lb; extra room is required for feeder access, paper, cables and service. The 150,000 maximum duty is not a recommended monthly volume.
