Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet handle color Letter printing, envelopes and 1,200 monthly pages with 250 sheets loaded?
Yes with compatible computer-print software. The ordinary Letter drawer and separate one-sheet envelope routine coexist, within the recommended monthly range.
Explore this need in the finder →Can USB provide Legal color printing without a scanner requirement?
Yes. Legal fits the ordinary drawer; extend the tray as instructed and match size/type settings. This is printing, not Legal document capture.
Explore this need in the finder →Does this exact n model print both sides automatically?
No. Lexmark explicitly lists automatic duplex as unavailable for C540n. Choose a positively documented duplex variant if that is essential.
Explore this need in the finder →Color output for a small wired queue
The Lexmark C540n is a print-only color laser for a modest shared office queue. US part 26A0000 includes USB Type-B and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet, with a recommended monthly range of 500–1,500 pages. It makes sense when printed color and conventional computer access matter, while scanning and automatic two-sided output are handled elsewhere or are unnecessary.
The exact n model has no automatic duplex. That is a deciding difference from C543dn and other duplex-equipped relatives. A family brochure showing two-sided printing elsewhere does not add that hardware here. Lexmark also marks this model discontinued, so assess the actual offered machine, supplies and software rather than treating the surviving page as a new-stock promise.
Use a computer connection that is actually supplied
The Type-B USB socket connects a computer directly. Fast Ethernet provides a conventional wired network arrangement for sharing. An optional external wireless print server is different from built-in Wi-Fi, and an optional gigabit server does not change the speed of the supplied Ethernet interface.
The original guide describes printing from Windows and Mac software. Set the paper size and type on the printer, then choose matching settings in the application's print dialog. For an older model, verify compatible software on the intended system before committing to a workflow. A historical operating-system list is not a present-day compatibility guarantee.
Network listings such as IPP and Bonjour do not independently establish AirPrint or Mopria. If a particular phone or tablet protocol is essential, choose hardware with explicit support for that routine. This machine also has no scanning glass, feeder, copier or fax; a print driver does not provide those document functions.
A 250-sheet load and a separate manual slot
The base printer contains a 250-sheet drawer and single-sheet manual feeder. Lexmark expresses the combined figure as 250+1 on a 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. The extra one is a sheet presented to the manual slot, not another stack or an additional enclosed tray.
Letter, Legal and A4 are confirmed in the main drawer. Longer-than-Letter or A4 paper requires the documented tray extension. Set the guides against the paper and update size/type settings when changing the load. Avoid mixing sizes or weights in one stack, and allow room behind the machine for the extended arrangement.
Suitable envelopes use the manual feeder one at a time, with their flap side up and guides adjusted. Select Envelope and the correct size in the software or panel settings. Use laser-compatible stock and avoid windows, clasps, exposed adhesive or damaged envelopes. This is a separate one-sided routine.
The optional Duo Drawer combines a 550-sheet tray and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, raising maximum input to 900+1. It is not supplied with the base C540n. The 100-sheet output bin is a separate limit, so paper collection can still be necessary during a longer queue.
Keep speed and regular volume in perspective
Lexmark declares up to 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute in both black and color. That figure is a continuous print mode, not a measured completion time for an application file. The printer also lists true 1200-by-1200-dpi printing separately from its Color Quality terminology; those labels should not be combined into a larger physical resolution claim.
The 35,000-page maximum duty rating does not replace the recommended 1,500-page monthly ceiling. For a consistently larger queue, compare a model documented for that regular volume and its actual supplied paper arrangement. For routine two-sided documents, start with an integrated-duplex model.
Check all four toner positions and physical condition
The original US package declares 1,000-page black and 1,000-page cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges. Listed high-yield replacements reach 2,500 black and 2,000 for each color under ISO/IEC 19798. The C544's larger cartridge choices should not be assumed compatible. Imaging kits, developer units and waste-toner parts are separate items to inspect.
Match supply region and Return Program conditions, and verify the electrical label and correct cord. The 46.2-pound body needs loading, ventilation and service clearance beyond its dimensions. Historical price guarantees or Rewards promotions do not establish present costs or entitlements. A duplex color printer or a color MFP is the more suitable comparison when those functions define the work.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Manufacturer maximum 21 one-sided Letter pages/minute in black or color. Exact C540n automatic duplex Not Available; no duplex rate borrowed from C543dn.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet drawer plus one-sheet manual feed, declared 250+1 at 20 lb/75 gsm. Letter/Legal/A4 each use the 250-sheet stack; the manual slot is not another tray. Manual-feed envelopes are one-sided. Maximum 900+1 needs an optional 650-sheet Duo Drawer; output 100 is separate.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only C54x hardware has no glass, document feeder, copying or fax. Choose separate scanning hardware for original capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Included USB Type-B and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet. External N4050e wireless and N7020e gigabit servers are optional. No included Wi-Fi/peer/mobile-protocol arrangement is established.
Supplies and declared yields
Original US supplied Return Program toner 1,000 black and 1,000 each CMY; replacements C540A1 series 1,000, C540H1KG/C540H2KG black 2,500 and C540H1/H2 C/M/Y color 2,000 under ISO/IEC 19798. C544 6,000-black/4,000-color supplies are not borrowed; imaging/developer/waste parts are separate.
Software and support
Original guide 53 gives Windows/Mac computer-print routines; current compatible software must be checked. Network IPP/Bonjour naming alone does not establish AirPrint or Mopria. Panel PIN protection is not evidence of confidential-job release.
Electrical edition and setup
Inspect the actual electrical label and correct cord. Body measurements exclude extended long-paper tray, ventilation and service clearance. Historical supply-price, Rewards and warranty promotions are not current purchase promises.
