A useful fit for

A commercial wired workgroup printing within 1,500–9,200 recommended monthly pages and using compatible confidential-print software.

The main tradeoff

Wi-Fi is optional; AirPrint has its own network arrangement and does not establish the desktop driver’s PIN or duplex options.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a commercial wired team combine Legal color duplex, 650 included sheets and PIN release at 9,000 monthly pages?

Yes with compatible computer-driver software and ordinary paper. The drawer and MP feeder provide 550 plus 100 sheets with matching settings; Legal duplex is explicit and the recommended ceiling is 9,200 pages/month.

Can basic AirPrint use the printer’s Ethernet connection on a suitable shared network?

Yes. The exact C746dn lists AirPrint, and Apple supports wired network arrangements when the device and printer share the appropriate network and the app offers printing. This does not require an included printer Wi-Fi radio.

Does an AirPrint job inherit the desktop driver’s confidential PIN release?

That combined arrangement is unestablished. PIN release is documented through compatible computer-driver software; its instructions do not establish PIN submission through the separate AirPrint route.

Color duplex printing for a commercial workgroup

The Lexmark C746dn is a color laser printer with included gigabit Ethernet, USB and automatic duplex. US part 41G0050 suits a commercial wired team printing within the maker's 1,500–9,200 recommended monthly pages. Its 2.4-inch color LCD uses buttons rather than touch, providing local status and settings without adding scanning, copying or fax.

The exact US page carries a commercial-use notice and says this model is not intended for residential environments. Check the offered unit's label and location suitability before reuse. Wi-Fi is optional, while the included Ethernet route can support several documented printing arrangements with different software conditions.

Plan the ordinary paper and envelope jobs separately

The supplied 650-sheet input combines a 550-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder at the 75-gsm or 20-pound ordinary-paper basis. The original tables explicitly support Letter, Legal and A4 in both sources and the automatic-duplex path. Set the actual size and type rather than relying on a previous load's settings.

For combined ordinary feeding, load matching stock and settings and use Cassette mode for the multipurpose feeder. Its support and extension need working space. A different stock or envelope load replaces its ordinary-paper stack; do not count both at once.

Suitable envelopes use the instructed one-sided multipurpose routine with the correct size/type and flap orientation. The stated capacity is ten envelopes. The separate 300-sheet output bin can need collecting before a full ordinary input load finishes, while the 4,300-sheet maximum requires optional hardware and appropriate support furniture.

Use duplex and confidential release through the right software

Compatible Windows and Macintosh computer printing software provides the documented duplex and binding controls. Check letterhead orientation and a short example before a longer report. The maker separately declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color and 23 black Letter sides per minute for automatic duplex. A color duplex rate is not established here.

Windows Print and Hold or Macintosh Job Routing can submit a confidential job with a user name and four-digit PIN. Select the job under Held Jobs and enter the PIN locally to release it. These jobs occupy printer memory and can be deleted under memory pressure. The separate Job Waiting feature needs a working optional hard disk.

The USB Type-B socket is the computer connection. The front Type-A socket accepts supported flash-drive output with its own file and device restrictions. Neither a host port nor a color control screen provides scanner hardware.

Keep AirPrint’s network arrangement distinct

The exact manufacturer specification lists AirPrint. Apple's instructions permit a wired network printer when the Apple device and printer share the appropriate network and the app provides printing. This allows the included Ethernet route to serve basic AirPrint output through a suitable shared network without assuming a built-in wireless radio.

That support does not establish every mobile media option or confidential-job feature. The reviewed AirPrint arrangement does not establish a specific paper-size list, automatic-duplex choices or PIN submission. Confirm the actual installed firmware, discovery and app options when those matter. The desktop driver's supported routines should be checked through that driver, and Mopria remains unestablished here.

Check toner and the remaining imaging components

The original US supplied toner declares 6,000 black and composite CMY pages. Replacements declare 12,000 black and 7,000 CMY under ISO/IEC 19798 on the maker's continuous one-sided basis. The guide restricts the 10,000-page CMY cartridges to C748 models, so do not assume those larger color supplies fit the C746dn.

Photoconductors, the waste toner bottle, fuser and transfer module also need inspection. Confirm their condition and the correct fuser voltage. The 85,000-page maximum monthly duty figure does not replace the recommended 9,200-page ceiling.

Lexmark marks this 55.6-pound model discontinued. Check its electrical label, proper cord, software and physical condition, allowing room beyond the listed body dimensions for trays, covers and airflow. A documented wireless or multifunction alternative is useful when either capability would simplify the commercial work area.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute for black or color. Black automatic Letter duplex is separately 23 sides per minute; a color duplex rate is unestablished. First-page time and color-quality figures are separate measures.

Paper handling

Included 550-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet MP feeder total 650 ordinary sheets at 75 gsm/20 lb. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both and automatic duplex. Match size/type and use MP Cassette mode for combined ordinary feeding. Envelopes replace its paper for a separate one-sided job; maximum 4,300 needs optional hardware and output is separately 300 sheets.

Scanning arrangement

Color print-only laser hardware has no scanner glass, document feeder, copying or fax. Its 2.4-inch color LCD is a non-touch control display, separate from color printing and document capture.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB Type-B computer port, gigabit Ethernet and a front Type-A flash-drive host port. Wi-Fi requires the optional internal radio. Exact manufacturer AirPrint support is represented through a shared network using included Ethernet; USB desktop printing does not provide that iPhone/iPad network route.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact US supplied toner declares 6,000 black/composite CMY pages. Replacements declare 12,000 black and 7,000 CMY under ISO/IEC 19798 in the maker’s continuous one-sided mode. C748-only 10,000-page CMY cartridges are excluded. Separate photoconductors, waste bottle, fuser and transfer module need condition checks.

Software and support

Compatible Windows Print and Hold/Mac Job Routing can submit memory-based confidential jobs with a four-digit PIN for local release. Memory pressure can delete held jobs. The separate Ethernet AirPrint arrangement establishes basic network printing; mobile media options, duplex and PIN release are unestablished there. Optional Job Waiting needs a working hard disk.

Electrical edition and setup

The exact US page specifies FCC Class A/commercial use and says the model is not intended for residential environments. Check the actual unit label, location and proper cord; nominal mains input is unestablished. Closed body weighs 55.6 lb; extended paper paths, covers and ventilation require more room. Optional drawers need proper stability arrangements.
