A useful fit for

A small workgroup printing within the recommended 750–5,000 monthly pages and using documented network printing or confidential computer jobs.

The main tradeoff

The standard paper stack remains 250 sheets; additional drawers are extra, and there is no scanner or copier.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I print color Legal reports on both sides over Wi-Fi at 4,500 monthly pages, with Mopria and PIN release for supported computer jobs?

Yes, with suitable network access and compatible software. The standard Legal duplex arrangement supports the documented network mobile route and driver PIN routine within the 5,000-page recommended maximum.

Does the standard Letter package include 500 paper-input sheets?

No. Standard input is 250 sheets plus one-sheet manual feed. The larger 750+1 maximum needs optional drawers.

Can the touchscreen printer also scan and copy paper documents?

No. Lexmark explicitly classifies CS431 as print-only color hardware; the touchscreen does not provide a scanner or copier.

A touchscreen changes operation, not the print-only scope

The Lexmark CS431dw is a US color printer reference for a small workgroup that wants automatic duplex, network sharing and a touchscreen without adding scanner hardware. Its practical advantages over a simpler compact configuration include the 2.8-inch panel, documented 802.11ac wireless and optional paper expansion. The tradeoff is that the base machine still has a 250-sheet main stack.

The exact US reference is part 40N9320. Confirm the actual suffix, regional unit, compatible software, included equipment and supply condition when comparing a machine or offer. The manufacturer's current product reference is not a promise of current stock or a new warranty. Do not treat a photograph of added trays as proof that those accessories are included.

Keep the Letter print rate and duplex routine together

Lexmark declares up to 26 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color. Automatic print duplex is separately rated at 13 Letter sides per minute. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from testing for this article. The color touchscreen does not raise the print engine's declared rate or turn a two-sided job into the faster one-sided mode.

Letter, Legal and A4 are positively supported in the ordinary main input and duplex path. Envelopes follow the instructed one-sided media routine, with different loading and stock limits. The one-sheet manual feeder is useful for an occasional alternate item rather than a second substantial stack. A general supported-media list should not be used to promise automatic two-sided handling for every stock.

The expansion figure requires an actual paper package

Standard input is 250 sheets plus a one-sheet manual feed on the stated 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. The exact model lists optional 250-sheet trays and a 750+1 maximum, but those drawers are separate equipment. If different letterhead or longer uninterrupted runs are central to the office routine, identify the real installed tray arrangement before assigning it a larger capacity.

Lexmark recommends 750–5,000 printed pages monthly, separately from its 75,000-page maximum duty ceiling. A larger paper package can reduce refilling but does not itself increase the recommended monthly range. The 100-sheet output capacity collects finished pages and should not be counted as another input source.

Network printing, peer setup and protected computer jobs

Included interfaces are USB Type-B, gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The Type-B socket serves a computer connection. A separate Direct USB field does not deny that explicitly specified interface. AirPrint and Mopria are documented shared-network printing routes, while the original guide also provides a Wi-Fi Direct computer setup.

These are distinct arrangements rather than a promise that every protocol works through every connection. A compatible Print and Hold driver can submit confidential PIN jobs for release at the touchscreen. Verify the actual software and release sequence; a mobile printing protocol does not establish protected submission from every phone application. Cloud connectors likewise depend on current firmware, service and account conditions.

Supplies and the work this machine does not perform

The supplied toner is declared at 1,500 pages for each CMYK cartridge under ISO/IEC 19798. Exact US extra-high-yield replacements include 20N1XK0 black at 6,000 pages and 20N1XC0, 20N1XM0 and 20N1XY0 colors at 6,700 each. These differ from the CS331 high-yield limits and MC/C cartridge codes. Match geographic compatibility and Return Program terms without deriving today's running cost from yield alone.

Lexmark explicitly classifies CS431 as print-only color hardware. There is no scanner, document feeder, copier or fax behind the touchscreen; generic app scanning text does not add those functions. The body is 16.2 inches wide, 15.5 deep and 9.6 high at 35.5 pounds, before optional trays and working clearance. Verify the electrical label and correct cord. This reference fits a shared color printing routine. Compare actual multifunction hardware for originals, or a complete expanded-input package when refilling is the main constraint.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 26 one-sided Letter pages/minute black or color; automatic print duplex separately 13 Letter sides/minute. These are declared specifications, not measured throughput.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet main tray plus one-sheet manual feed, standard 250+1 at 20 lb/75 gsm; per-size stack 250. Letter, Legal and A4 support automatic print duplex. Optional 250-sheet drawers can raise the stated maximum to 750+1, but are not included. Envelopes use the instructed simplex routine.

Scanning arrangement

Explicitly print-only color laser. Generic app/driver text mentioning document capture or scanning does not establish scanner, copier, fax or feeder hardware.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB Type-B, gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Direct USB:No does not deny the separately listed Type-B computer connection. Original guide documents Wi-Fi Direct computer setup. AirPrint/Mopria are assigned to the shared-network route.

Supplies and declared yields

Supplied toner declared 1,500 pages each CMYK ISO/IEC 19798. Exact US 20N1XK0 black replacement 6,000 and 20N1XC0/20N1XM0/20N1XY0 colors 6,700 each; 20N10-family standard cartridges 1,500. Match geographic and Return Program conditions. CS331 4,500-page or MC/C supply codes are not substituted.

Software and support

Exact model page supports AirPrint and Mopria network printing. Original guide pages 37–38 supports compatible-driver Print and Hold confidential PIN jobs, including panel release directions for non-touchscreen models. Verify compatible current software; retired cloud listings are not service guarantees.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US part and regional reference established. Nominal electrical input is not directly established in the read print-only sources; check the actual unit label and correct cord. Body measurements exclude operating and service clearance.
