A useful fit for

A wired small office needing color printing, copies, fax and automatic two-sided document capture within 800–6,500 printed pages monthly.

The main tradeoff

The feeder reverses originals rather than scanning both sides in one pass; Wi-Fi and extra input are options.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I scan both sides of Legal originals in color over Ethernet, and print/copy/fax in a 5,000-page monthly office with 250 Letter sheets?

Yes, with earlier references enabled, compatible scan software and a separately configured working analog phone line. Legal fits the reversing feeder, not the glass.

Can it satisfy single-pass duplex scanning for a two-sided Letter batch?

No. The exact CX421adn has a reversing duplex feeder; it does not use single-pass capture.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can I scan a Legal sheet on the glass instead of using the feeder?

No. The service manual explicitly excludes Legal from the scanner glass, even though the feeder supports it.

A wired multifunction printer with a reversing feeder

The Lexmark CX421adn fits a small office that wants color printing, copying, computer scanning and analog fax in one wired device. Its 50-sheet feeder automatically captures both sides by reversing the original. The main tradeoff is that this is not single-pass duplex scanning, and the included network connection is Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi.

This reference covers US part 42C7330, marked discontinued by Lexmark. Verify the exact unit, regional supplies, installed options and current software when comparing an offer. There is no claim here about current stock, warranty on an offered machine or measured performance. Nearby CX and MC variants have different radios, feeder mechanisms and paper expansion, so matching only the family name is insufficient.

Use the feeder and glass for different originals

The feeder is rated for 50 sheets on the 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. The exact original service manual supports Letter, Legal and A4 in the feeder while explicitly excluding Legal from the scanner glass. Use the glass for Letter or A4 originals and suitable items that should not pass through the feeder. A general scanner-area headline should not erase that distinction between physical routes.

For Letter originals, Lexmark declares simplex scan rates of 50 black or 32 color sides per minute. Reversing duplex is separately 23 black or 14 color sides per minute. A4 figures differ. These are manufacturer ratings, not measurements from this article, and scan-side rates are not printer pages per minute. Compare a single-pass feeder if repeated two-sided capture is the deciding workload.

Printing, monthly volume and the supplied paper stack

The one-sided Letter print rating is up to 25 pages per minute in black or color, with automatic print duplex separately at 12.5 Letter sides per minute. Letter, Legal and A4 have positive support in the ordinary main tray and two-sided print path. Scanning and printing duplex are different functions even though both are present in this exact configuration.

Included input is 250 sheets plus a one-sheet manual feed, stated as 250+1 at the specified paper weight. One optional 650-sheet duo assembly raises the maximum to 900+1; it is not included with the base printer. Envelopes need their own one-sided media routine. Lexmark recommends 800–6,500 printed pages monthly, distinct from a 75,000-page maximum duty ceiling. Use the recommendation and real refill pattern for normal planning.

Computer scanning, shared mobile printing and fax setup

The exact US page positively lists scanning to a USB-connected or network-connected computer. USB Type-B provides the computer interface, while gigabit Ethernet provides shared networking. The guide explains network ScanBack profiles and compatible Windows or Mac scanning routines. Front flash-drive scanning is a separate destination, not proof that every USB socket serves a host computer.

AirPrint and Mopria use a suitable shared network. A phone on office Wi-Fi can reach a wired printer under that arrangement; the optional MarkNet N8372 radio is still optional. The 2.4-inch color LCD has buttons and a keypad rather than a touchscreen. Compatible confidential-print software submits a PIN-protected job for release at the panel.

The exact analog fax hardware is positively documented, but it needs a working supported telephone-line connection and completed setup. Ethernet alone is not that phone line. Separate etherFAX subscription, registration and firmware conditions or a FoIP license should not be treated as an already configured base fax service.

Supplies and the space to operate

Supplied toner is declared at 2,000 black pages and 1,400 pages for each color under ISO/IEC 19798. Exact US 78C1XK0 black replacement reaches 8,500 pages, and 78C1XC0, 78C1XM0 and 78C1XY0 colors reach 5,000 each. Match region and Return Program conditions, with imaging, developer and waste components considered separately. These yields do not establish a present cost per page.

The body is 17.4 inches wide, 21.9 deep and 18.2 high at 59 pounds before access clearance. Check the actual electrical label and cord. Choose it for a supported wired office routine when reversing duplex capture is adequate; compare another exact configuration when single-pass scanning, included wireless or more supplied paper is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 25 one-sided Letter pages/minute black or color; print duplex 12.5 Letter sides/minute. Letter scan simplex 50 black/32 color sides/minute, reversing duplex 23 black/14 color sides/minute. A4 figures differ; no measured results claimed.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet main tray plus one-sheet manual feed at 20 lb/75 gsm, standard 250+1; main stack 250 for Letter, Legal and A4, all automatic print duplex supported. Optional 650-sheet duo alone increases maximum to 900+1. Envelopes use their separate one-sided routine.

Scanning arrangement

Flatbed plus 50-sheet reversing duplex ADF, not single-pass. Original service manual explicitly supports Letter/Legal/A4 in feeder and excludes Legal from glass; glass Letter/A4 only. Exact US scan destinations include USB or network connected computer; original guide explains network ScanBack and computer scanning.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB Type-B computer print/scan and gigabit Ethernet. Type-A flash-drive input is distinct from the computer port. MarkNet N8372 Wi-Fi is optional. Documented AirPrint/Mopria use a suitable shared network; mobile devices may use office Wi-Fi while the printer is wired. Analog fax separately requires a working supported telephone-line arrangement and setup.

Supplies and declared yields

US supplied toner declared at 2,000 black and 1,400 each CMY pages under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement 78C1XK0 black 8,500 and 78C1XC0/XM0/XY0 colors 5,000; no CX622 ultra-high supplies borrowed. Imaging/developer/waste components separate; geographic and Return Program conditions apply.

Software and support

Original guide documents network ScanBack profiles and compatible Windows/Mac computer scanning; exact US destinations also name a USB-connected computer. Compatible Print and Hold or Job Routing/AirPrint PIN options submit confidential jobs for panel release. Check current software compatibility. Old cloud names do not guarantee service availability.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US configuration established. Nominal electrical input is not established in the read sources; verify the real unit label and correct cord. Body dimensions exclude paper extensions, open scanner cover and service clearance.
