Lexmark E450dn: wired duplex printer with a four-line panel review

A small wired printer with more useful local guidance

The Lexmark E450dn is a monochrome laser printer that combines included wired networking, automatic duplex and a four-line display. US part 33S0700 is aimed at an office printing within the maker's recommended 1,500–6,900-page monthly range. Its body is compact, but the included paper configuration remains a 250-sheet drawer with a separate one-sheet manual slot.

The display is a practical distinction when somebody at the machine must resolve a paper or supply condition. It does not add color output or document capture: the E450dn has no scanner, copier or fax hardware. A team that receives paper originals still needs a separate capture arrangement or a genuine multifunction printer.

Wire the office and verify the connection

USB Type-B and parallel support local computer connections; 10/100 Ethernet supports wired sharing. The original guide recommends printing a network setup page and confirming that its status is Connected. That separates a cable or network problem from an application or driver problem before repeated jobs accumulate.

Use compatible printer software for the actual computer. The documented custom driver exposes the printer's features, while an operating system's generic driver may present different options. Check the intended files and job settings before relying on a historical compatibility list. Optional external wireless or gigabit servers should not be treated as included interfaces.

AirPrint and Mopria are not established here. A network socket, IPP entry or old software name is insufficient to promise a current phone workflow. Choose an explicitly supported mobile model when that requirement is central to the purchase.

Automatic duplex has an explicit paper range

The E450dn guide specifically limits automatic duplex to Letter, Legal, A4 and Folio paper. That gives an office a documented route for ordinary two-sided Legal documents rather than merely a general Legal input claim. Choose the correct size, source, side setting and binding in compatible printing software.

The normal drawer holds 250 sheets at the 20-pound or 75-gsm basis, with Letter, Legal and A4 each supported at that ordinary-paper capacity. Extend the drawer for longer sheets and leave rear clearance for the extension and dust cover. Set paper size and type to match the load, and avoid mixing unlike media in a stack.

The one-sheet manual slot handles suitable envelopes and occasional different stock. Set its size and type separately and let the feed mechanism engage without force. Envelopes use a one-sided routine. A 550-sheet optional drawer is needed to reach the advertised 800-sheet input maximum; the separate 150-sheet output bin does not increase input capacity.

Held jobs are useful, but read what they actually do

The guide documents Verify Print, Reserve Print and Repeat Print. Verify produces an initial copy for inspection before the remaining copies are released. Reserve retains a job for later local selection, and Repeat allows additional copies while its data remains in memory. These routines require suitable computer software and have different retention behavior.

Memory pressure can delete some retained jobs, and selecting a user name at the panel is not the same as proving confidential PIN authentication. The reviewed instructions do not establish a complete PIN-release arrangement. If privacy depends on entering a secret code before output appears, choose a model and driver with that exact routine documented.

Workload and supplies need their own checks

Lexmark declares up to 35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 16 Letter sides per minute in automatic print duplex. Those modes should remain distinct when considering a real document routine. The 80,000-page maximum monthly duty figure is also separate from the recommended monthly ceiling of 6,900 pages.

The original US package includes a declared 6,000-page Return Program toner cartridge. Regional E450A11A or E450A21A replacements also declare 6,000 pages, while E450H11A or E450H21A declare 11,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate E250X22G photoconductor uses an approximately 5% coverage basis for its 30,000-page declaration. Remaining supplies in an offered machine are a different question.

This discontinued printer weighs 25 pounds. Check the electrical label, correct cord, software availability, cartridge region and physical condition, and allow service access beyond the closed body. A documented multifunction or wireless model is the more appropriate alternative when the office needs those functions together.
