The Lexmark MS317dn is an earlier small-workgroup monochrome printer with included automatic duplex, a two-line LCD and wired computer connections. Exact US part 35SC060 combines a 250-sheet drawer with a 50-sheet multipurpose feeder. It can suit a modest office queue whose regular month stays within the manufacturer's 500–2,500-page recommendation.
Lexmark marks it discontinued. Verify the actual offered unit and regional supplies before buying. A particularly useful distinction from the nearby MS312 is the toner family: this model's exact listed replacements are 51B products. A similar body, speed or shared guide is not enough to make a higher-yield cartridge from another model the right choice.
Ordinary computer connections are included
Standard USB Type-B connects to a computer, with a bidirectional parallel interface also listed. Ethernet is 10/100BaseTX and works within a 1000Base-T network, but the printer's own port should not be described as gigabit. These connections support the conventional computer-printing routine; the separate DirectUSB No entry does not remove the listed USB Type-B interface.
Wi-Fi requires optional MarkNet hardware. The original shared guide also discusses mobile printing, but its AirPrint instructions state that they apply only to some printer models. Use the monthly recommendation and the right speed mode

Work with the two paper sources

Letter, Legal and A4 fit both ordinary inputs and the automatic-duplex path. Set the guides and size/type settings for the load. Matching settings matter if the intention is to use the two sources for the same ordinary paper.
Legal paper requires moving the length guide beyond the base. That changes the room needed for operation even though the closed body is 15.0 inches deep. Loading, output and service access also need space. A second 250- or 550-sheet drawer is optional, with 850 sheets maximum using the larger accessory; that maximum is not included input.
Suitable envelopes have a separate one-sided multipurpose-feeder routine. They are not main-drawer or automatic-duplex media. Follow the original loading directions and media restrictions rather than assuming that every envelope construction behaves like plain office paper.
Check toner identity and protected-job needs
The original US package declares 1,500 pages of starter toner. Exact listed replacements 51B1000 and 51B00A0 each declare 2,500 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, with Return Program conditions on the former. The 50F0Z00 or 50F0ZA0 imaging unit is a separate 60,000-page component with its own coverage and job assumptions. Those declarations do not establish present cartridge prices or a live running cost.
The shared manual's confidential-job chapter expressly names MS315, MS415 and MS417. It does not establish a complete MS317 PIN-release routine. Choose a positively documented protected-output configuration when that is central to the work. This model remains print-only monochrome hardware without paper scanning, copying or fax.
