Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can Ethernet combine fax, Letter glass, Letter duplex feeder scans and 350-sheet Legal duplex printing?
Yes with compatible network scan software and a suitable separate fax line. Letter scanning and ordinary Legal printing are confirmed independently.
Explore this need in the finder →Can USB support PIN-held A4 duplex printing for 9,000 monthly pages?
Yes with compatible protected-job software and local release. Ordinary A4 print duplex and the recommended monthly range meet these needs.
Explore this need in the finder →Is full-length Legal glass scanning established despite the US area entry?
No confirmed Legal glass route is modeled. The exact US 8.5-by-11 maximum and broader family tables conflict, so that selected size needs clarification before choosing.
Explore this need in the finder →Wired printing and two-sided capture with a touchscreen
The Lexmark MX421ade combines monochrome printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. US part 36S0700 includes gigabit Ethernet, USB Type-B, a front USB host port and 350 sheets of input. It suits a wired office that wants automatic two-sided A4 or Letter feeder capture within a recommended 1,000–10,000-page monthly range.
The document feeder reverses each sheet to capture both faces. That is automatic duplex scanning, but not single-pass scanning. The model's suffix also does not provide standard Wi-Fi: the exact US record says Wireless No and lists an N8372 option. Confirm any offered wireless hardware separately.
Confirm the scanner surface when size matters
Letter glass scanning and A4 or Letter feeder modes are established. The US page, however, gives an 8.5-by-11-inch maximum scan-area entry while a broader family table describes larger routes. Those records do not provide a consistent exact Legal scanning boundary. Confirm the required surface and size before choosing for full-length Legal originals or another essential glass dimension.
That caution does not remove the documented scanner. Appropriate loose pages go faceup in the 50-sheet feeder, with their leading edges aligned and guides adjusted. Use the glass for books, photos, small items and fragile media. Color originals can be captured in color, while copies and printed documents remain monochrome.
The exact source declares A4 and Letter duplex scan rates separately up to 20 black or 10.5 color sides per minute. Those figures are not print speeds or measured complete processing times. If large two-sided batches dominate the routine, compare a genuine single-pass mechanism rather than treating every automatic feeder as equivalent.
Prepare computer scanning and protected output
Scanning to USB- or network-connected computers is explicitly listed. The original guide describes ScanBack profiles, Windows Fax and Scan, and Mac Image Capture workflows. Check current scanner software, destinations and permissions on the intended system. A functioning print queue alone does not establish a configured scan workflow.
The exact US page lists AirPrint, and the scoped guide supplies Mopria and AirPrint instructions for suitable shared networking. A compatible mobile device can reach the wired printer through the appropriate network. This is different from an included radio or an unverified peer connection.
Confidential printing has a specific computer routine. Compatible Windows software uses Print and Hold; Mac software provides PIN Printing. A four-digit PIN controls local release, with expiration and invalid-attempt settings affecting stored jobs. Confirm the complete submission and release process for the intended software rather than relying on a general security claim.
The front USB host port supports documented flash-drive functions, subject to file and FAT-format restrictions. It is separate from the Type-B computer connection. Analog fax likewise needs its own suitable telephone-line or adapter arrangement and station information; Ethernet is not the ordinary analog fax transport.
The base paper load and ordinary printing
The included 250-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder total 350 sheets on the stated 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. Letter, Legal and A4 fit the ordinary print inputs and automatic print duplex. That printing capability does not settle the separate scanner-size conflict.
Set guides, size and type to match each load, and use a separate one-sided feeder routine for suitable envelopes. The 900-sheet maximum needs an optional drawer. The maker declares up to 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately 21 Letter sides per minute in print duplex. Its 100,000-page maximum duty rating is distinct from the recommended monthly ceiling.
Supplies and an earlier offered unit
The original US starter declares 3,000 pages. Listed replacements are 56F1000 at 6,000, 56F1H00 at 15,000 and 56F1X00 or 56F0XA0 at 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate 60,000-page imaging unit has a different job and coverage basis. Match regional and Return Program terms.
Lexmark marks the MX421ade discontinued. Inspect condition, installed options, compatible software and the electrical label. Allow loading, scanner-cover and service room around the 42.8-pound body. A confirmed larger scanner surface or standard-wireless configuration is the comparison when either is essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact US maximum 42 one-sided Letter pages/minute; print duplex separately 21 Letter sides/minute. A4/Letter reversing duplex scans separately up to 20 black/10.5 color sides/minute; scan and print rates are different.
Paper handling
Exact US included 250-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet MPF: 350 sheets at 20 lb/75 gsm. Letter/Legal/A4 fit the ordinary inputs and automatic print duplex. Extra drawers are optional; suitable envelopes use MPF simplex. Generic family standard-550 heading does not change this package.
Scanning arrangement
50-sheet reversing duplex ADF, not single-pass. Letter glass and A4/Letter feeder modes are confirmed. Exact US gives 8.5 x 11 maximum while generic family table is broader; Legal scan routes and A4 glass remain unresolved and are not qualified for selected size requirements.
Computer and mobile connections
Included gigabit Ethernet, USB Type-B and front Type-A flash port. USB/network computer scanning is explicit. Wireless No; N8372 Wi-Fi is optional, so no included wireless or peer arrangement is modeled. AirPrint exact US positive and scoped Mopria instructions use suitable shared networking.
Supplies and declared yields
US starter Return Program toner 3,000 pages. 56F1000 replacement 6,000; 56F1H00 15,000; 56F1X00/56F0XA0 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. Separate 56F0Z00/56F0ZA0 imaging unit 60,000 uses a different job/coverage basis. Match regional and Return Program conditions.
Software and support
Guide 42–43 supplies actual compatible Windows Print and Hold and Mac PIN Printing with four-digit PIN and local release, plus expiration/invalid-attempt settings. Unqualified scoped Mopria and AirPrint instructions require suitable shared networking. Front flash routines have FAT/file restrictions; verify current compatible print/scan software.
Electrical edition and setup
Analog fax needs station information and a suitable separate phone-line/adapter arrangement. Ethernet or Wi-Fi is not the ordinary analog fax transport. Inspect the actual electrical label and allow loading, scanner-cover and service space beyond body dimensions.
