A useful fit for

A wired team needing Legal glass scans, automatic two-sided feeder capture and ordinary printing within a 12,000-page recommended monthly ceiling.

The main tradeoff

The base model has no fax; wireless, extra drawers and some advanced scan formats depend on optional hardware or software.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Ethernet combine Legal glass scans, Legal duplex feeder scans and Legal duplex printing with 350 included sheets?

Yes. The exact model footnote includes Legal glass, and the reversing feeder and both ordinary print inputs support that size.

Can a USB workstation print PIN-held Letter jobs for 10,000 monthly pages?

Yes with compatible Print and Hold software and local release. The recommended monthly maximum covers that workload.

Does the shared MX511 guide give this base MX510 analog fax too?

No. The exact US specification lists modem N/A, and the original service model table explicitly says No fax for MX510de.

Choose it for scanning, not for a presumed fax modem

The Lexmark MX510de is a wired monochrome office MFP with a useful combination of Legal-size glass and automatic two-sided feeder scanning. US part 35S5702 includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 350 sheets of paper input and automatic print duplex. Its recommended monthly range is 2,000–12,000 pages.

The important suffix distinction is fax. The exact US page lists its modem as N/A, and the manufacturer's service configuration table explicitly identifies the MX510de as No fax. A shared manual with the MX511 does not install that neighboring model's modem. If conventional fax is essential, compare an exact fax-equipped configuration before considering other features.

Legal originals have two supported routes

The 50-sheet feeder supports Letter, Legal and A4, and captures both sides by reversing the original. It is automatic duplex scanning, but not single-pass scanning. The glass also supports all three sizes. That last point is model-specific: the original paper table expressly includes MX510 in its Legal-glass footnote, unlike the smaller MX410 and MX417.

This makes the glass useful for a full-length Legal original that should not travel through rollers. Normal loose pages can go faceup into the feeder, short edge first, with guides adjusted. Books, photographs, small items and thin or fragile media belong on the glass. Color capture is available even though printed pages and copies remain monochrome.

The maker separates Letter scan modes: up to 43 black or 20 color sides per minute for simplex, and 19 black or 9 color sides for duplex. These are not print rates or a guarantee for scanning, processing and saving a particular file. A large recurring duplex workload may justify comparing a genuine single-pass feeder.

Computer workflows and optional processing features

The exact source lists scanning to a USB- or network-connected computer. A gigabit Ethernet installation can use the documented Scan Profile process: choose settings and a computer destination, submit a profile, then initiate it at the touchscreen. Check current software compatibility and the intended destination permissions before relying on an older workflow.

The front USB host port also provides supported flash-drive routines, subject to the guide's FAT formatting and file restrictions. It is distinct from the USB Type-B computer port. A listed searchable-PDF option is not an unconditional included feature: the source requires optional OCR, 1 GB of RAM and a hard disk. Highly compressed PDF also carries stated upgrade conditions.

Confidential printing has a separate ordinary computer routine. Compatible Print and Hold software assigns a four-digit PIN, with local release at the panel. Expiration, invalid attempts and memory pressure can remove stored jobs. The optional disk should not be confused with the guide's ordinary memory-based held-job instructions.

Wired access and the included paper load

Gigabit Ethernet and USB Type-B are included. Wireless needs an optional N8350 card, while parallel and serial interfaces are also optional. The exact US AirPrint listing supports suitable shared networking; it does not create a built-in radio or prove every other mobile protocol.

A 250-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder total 350 sheets on the stated 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both inputs and automatic duplex. Set size and type to match the load, and use the separate one-sided feeder routine for suitable envelopes. Reaching the 2,000-sheet maximum needs additional drawers.

Printing is declared at up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute, with duplex separately 20 Letter sides per minute. The 120,000-page maximum duty figure is not the recommended monthly ceiling. These are manufacturer specifications, not measured application results.

Supplies and installation checks

The original US starter declares 5,000 pages. Listed replacements are 60F1000 at 2,500, 60F1H00 at 10,000 and 60F1X00 or 60F0XA0 at 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. The separate 60,000-page imaging unit uses its own job and coverage basis. Match regional and Return Program conditions. Lexmark marks this model discontinued; inspect the offered unit, electrical label, available software and loading space around its 48-pound body.
