The main tradeoff

Ethernet and automatic duplex are not supplied by this exact base package; expansion and wireless need verified hardware.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can USB combine PIN-held Legal printing, 600-sheet input and 18,000 monthly pages?

Yes with compatible confidential-print software and suitable paper. Legal fits the 500-sheet drawer and 100-sheet MPF; the recommended maximum is 19,000 monthly pages.

A larger base load for a directly attached queue

The Lexmark T642 base model combines monochrome laser output with a supplied 500-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. Exact US part 20G0200 fits a directly attached computer routine within the maker's recommended 3,000–19,000 printed pages per month. Its larger 600-sheet input is useful when the smaller T640 load would require more frequent replenishment.

The exact package remains important. Its base interface specification and original part-number catalog list USB and parallel, while the network-equipped T642n is a separate configuration. The matching duplex unit is optional too. Verify additions on an offered machine instead of assuming the full range of family options is supplied.

Use the actual computer and confidential-print routines

USB Type-B provides the supported direct-computer arrangement here. The front USB Direct interface is for a different walk-up file routine. Internal card slots and optional network servers provide expansion possibilities, but an empty slot does not establish Ethernet or wireless hardware.

The original guide describes installing compatible local print software and submitting documents from Windows and Mac applications. Select the intended printer and match paper source, size and type. Confirm a current compatible path on the actual computer, because historical driver instructions do not guarantee every later operating system.

Confidential printing uses an actual submission and release process. Compatible Windows software uses Print and Hold; the Mac routine uses Job Routing and Confidential Print. Submit a user name and four-digit PIN using digits 0–9, then select the user and job at the printer and enter the same PIN. Printed confidential jobs are deleted from printer memory.

This routine does not require borrowing optional hard-disk encryption. Other held-job types, such as Verify, Reserve and Repeat, behave differently and do not all require a PIN. Use the correct job type when protected local release matters.

Keep the 600-sheet paper arrangement distinct from options

The exact US specification and the guide's model table agree on a 500-sheet standard drawer. With the 100-sheet MPF, included input totals 600 at the stated 20-pound or 75-gsm basis. Letter, Legal and A4 fit both ordinary sources. Adjust guides, remain below load lines and match panel and software settings to the actual stock.

The compatible duplex unit is the version matching a 500-sheet standard tray. It mounts below the printer and is not included in this base package. Its name describes compatibility, not additional input capacity. An installed unit and the driver configuration need checking before relying on automatic two-sided printing.

Suitable envelopes use a separate one-sided MPF routine, with up to ten under the guide's conditions. Select Envelope and the exact size, and avoid stamps, windows, clasps, exposed adhesive or damaged stock. The 85-envelope feeder is a separate option.

Front PDFs and expanded output

The front USB Direct routine requires suitable USB storage using FAT rather than NTFS. The guide supports PDF printing but excludes encrypted files and files without print permission. Select the document and quantity at the panel, and leave the drive connected until the job finishes. Ordinary office document formats are not automatically equivalent to supported PDFs.

The 4,100-sheet maximum input, extra output bins and finishing arrangements require optional hardware. Base output holds 500 sheets. Inspect installed equipment and driver recognition, and follow support-furniture requirements for larger floor-mounted combinations. This print-only machine does not gain scanning, copying or fax from paper-handling options.

Rates, regional supplies and maintenance

Lexmark declares up to 45 one-sided Letter pages per minute. That is a manufacturer mode rather than a measured application result. The separate 225,000-page maximum duty rating does not replace the recommended monthly ceiling.

The original US supplied cartridge declares 6,000 pages. Americas replacements include 6,000- and 21,000-page choices under ISO/IEC 19752, without borrowing the T644's 32,000-page option. Specialized label work needs the specified cartridge and fuser-cleaner arrangement. On this discontinued model, inspect maintenance condition, the electrical label and operating space around the 51-pound body. A documented network or duplex package is the comparison when those functions are essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 45 one-sided Letter pages/minute. The matching 500-sheet duplex unit is optional, so no base automatic duplex mode or rate is qualified.

Paper handling

Exact included 500-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet MPF totals 600 at 20 lb/75 gsm; guide model table independently confirms the 500-sheet drawer. Letter/Legal/A4 fit both. Envelopes use MPF simplex. Maximum 4,100 input and additional output/finishing need options; base output is 500.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only monochrome hardware has no glass, document feeder, copying or fax. Optional paper-handling devices do not add scanning.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact base standard ports are USB Type-B, front USB Direct, parallel and two internal card slots. Original part-number catalog distinguishes base USB/parallel from T642n Ethernet. Generic Ethernet marketing is not used to qualify an included network plan; wireless is optional.

Supplies and declared yields

Original US supplied Return Program cartridge 6,000 pages. Americas 64015SA/64035SA replacements 6,000 and 64015HA/64035HA 21,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. T644 32,000-page cartridges are not borrowed. Special label work needs the specified cartridge/fuser-cleaner arrangement; maintenance items are separate.

Software and support

Original guide 40–41 gives compatible Windows Print and Hold and Mac Job Routing/Confidential Print with a four-digit PIN using 0–9 and local release. Jobs are held in printer memory; optional hard-disk encryption is a separate feature. Front USB PDF printing requires FAT storage and excludes encrypted files or files without printing permission. Verify current software compatibility.

Electrical edition and setup

Inspect actual installed options, maintenance condition, electrical label and correct cord. Allow loading, ventilation, output access and service clearance beyond body dimensions. Larger floor-mounted option stacks need the specified support furniture.
