Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can included Wi-Fi combine print duplex, Legal reversing scans and fax at 2,500 monthly pages?
Yes with flexible print paper size, compatible network scanning software and a suitable separate analog telephone path. The radio and Legal reversing route are included; the exact print-duplex size subset remains unestablished.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a USB computer capture a fragile Legal original on the glass and print ordinary Letter pages or envelopes?
Yes with compatible scanner software. The glass explicitly accepts 8.5-by-14-inch originals; ordinary Letter input holds 250 sheets, while suitable envelopes use a separate one-sided manual-feed routine.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the built-in wireless radio confirm Wi-Fi Direct peer scanning?
No. The established arrangement joins a configured wireless network; a separate Wi-Fi Direct computer-scanning path is not established.

The Lexmark X544dw is the X544 family configuration with an included wireless radio as well as automatic print duplex, copying, analog fax and reversing duplex scanning. US part 26C0400 also retains wired Ethernet and USB computer connections. It fits a small office that wants to position a shared color MFP away from an Ethernet socket while keeping ordinary computer scanning in the workflow.
The deciding qualifications are the scanner's reversing method and the platform's age. Two-sided originals turn inside the feeder rather than passing two sensors in one transit. The built-in radio also does not by itself establish current mobile protocols. Lexmark marks the machine discontinued, so verify the intended software and network setup before choosing an offered unit.
Configure the network before creating scan profiles
The exact US specification includes 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 10/100 Ethernet and USB Type-B. This distinguishes the dw from family variants that list an external wireless print server as an option. For wireless installation, gather the network name and matching security settings, then follow the setup software's connection prompts. A temporary installation cable is not the same thing as the final network route.
Network computer scanning uses a configured destination. The guide provides browser-based Scan Profile and ScanBack routines: select the output settings and location on the computer, create the profile, then recall it at the printer. Check the destination permissions and a completed sample file. USB computer scanner software is documented separately and should be verified with the intended operating system.
Neither historical Bonjour or IPP terminology nor the presence of Wi-Fi establishes AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct here. If a phone-only workflow is essential, choose a printer with an explicitly supported protocol and current setup instructions. The front Type-A port has separate supported flash-drive print and scan functions; it is not the USB socket used to connect the computer.
Use the full glass area when needed
The scanner glass explicitly accepts originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. That supports full-length Legal capture as well as Letter and A4, including documents that should not be fed automatically. Place fragile pages, photos, small items and suitably thin book pages on the glass at the marked corner.
The 50-sheet reversing feeder handles suitable loose Letter, Legal and A4 originals. Load pages faceup with the short edge first, adjust the guides and select the actual original-side setting. Reversing duplex capture is automatic, but a single-pass requirement calls for different hardware. Color scanning preserves colored markings, while color laser printing is a separate output capability.
For fax, connect an appropriate telephone path and enter the station information. The ordinary fax arrangement is analog; the wireless computer network does not replace its phone connection. Digital telephone services require their documented equipment and individual checks.
Keep paper capacity and optional hardware distinct
The supplied paper system is a 250-sheet drawer and one-sheet manual feed, declared as 250+1 using 20-pound or 75-gsm paper. Letter, Legal and A4 each fit the ordinary drawer stack. The additional 550-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder belong to the optional Duo Drawer. The stated 900+1 maximum therefore requires extra hardware.
Automatic print duplex is included, but the reviewed paper-size table does not separately establish its exact size subset. Check the precise paper and driver choice for a required two-sided job. Suitable grain-long paper from 60–105 gsm is the documented duplex media range; envelopes, labels, card stock and transparencies do not belong in that duplex path. Envelopes instead use the instructed one-sided manual feed.
Lexmark recommends 800–3,000 printed pages per month. The much higher 55,000-page maximum duty figure is not that recommendation. Up-to-25-ppm black or color Letter printing is also explicitly one-sided, separate from scan or automatic print-duplex performance.
Inspect an earlier unit as a complete system
The original US package declares 2,500-page black and 2,000-page color Return Program toner under ISO/IEC 19798. Extra-high replacements reach 6,000 black and 4,000 color pages. Match cartridge region and conditions, and inspect remaining toner and separate imaging or waste components rather than assuming a used machine retains its original package.
The 60-pound body needs room for the glass lid, extended paper, cables and service access. Check its electrical label and actual condition. If modern mobile printing or intensive single-pass digitizing is central, a more recent explicitly documented MFP is the sensible comparison. For a moderate computer-based office, the X544dw's included network options are its main distinction.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Maker maximum 25 one-sided Letter pages/minute in black or color. Simplex scan rates separately reach 18 A4 or 20 Letter sides/minute in black or color; reversing capture and print duplex are different modes with no throughput inferred here.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet drawer plus single-sheet manual feed, declared 250+1 at 20 lb/75 gsm. Each Letter/Legal/A4 stack holds 250; the manual slot is separate. Optional Duo Drawer adds 550+100; maximum 900+1 is not supplied. Envelopes use the one-sided manual-feed routine.
Scanning arrangement
50-sheet reversing duplex ADF and an explicit 8.5 x 14-inch glass support Letter, Legal and A4. A reversing feeder turns originals; it is not single-pass capture. Included print duplex is confirmed, but its exact paper-size subset remains unestablished.
Computer and mobile connections
Included 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 10/100 Ethernet and USB Type-B. Computer scan profiles work through a configured network; USB computer scan software is also documented. No Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria route is established. Front Type-A/PictBridge and analog telephone fax remain separate routines.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact US supplied 2,500-page black and 2,000-page CMY Return Program toner, ISO/IEC 19798. Extra-high replacement choices reach 6,000 black/4,000 CMY; high yields 2,500/2,000 and standard 1,000 are separate. Regional identity and Return Program terms matter.
Software and support
Compatible computer printer/scanner software is required. The guide documents network Scan Profile/ScanBack, Scan Center and USB/network scanner connection troubleshooting. Modern OS compatibility, AirPrint/Mopria and protected-job PIN release remain unestablished.
Electrical edition and setup
Inspect the actual electrical label and correct cord; nominal mains input is unestablished. Body dimensions exclude extended trays, scanner lid and service/ventilation access. Historical warranty, toner-price guarantee and Rewards terms are not present purchase promises.
