Lexmark X544n: reversing scan feeder without print duplex review

The scanner and printer handle sides differently

The Lexmark X544n is a color laser MFP for a wired workgroup that scans two-sided paperwork but mainly produces one-sided output. US part 3044503 supplies a reversing document feeder, a Legal-size flatbed, copying and analog fax. Lexmark recommends 800–3,000 printed pages per month, with declared one-sided Letter output up to 25 pages per minute in black or color.

Its name matters. The X544n does not include automatic two-sided printing: the exact specification marks that function unavailable. The feeder can still capture both sides automatically by reversing each original. This combination makes sense for an office digitizing incoming two-sided records, but it is a poor fit when two-sided printed reports are an everyday requirement.

Choose glass or feeder to protect the original

The 50-sheet feeder accepts suitable ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 pages. Load the stack faceup, short edge first, adjust the guides and select the original's side setting. A reversing feeder turns sheets to capture the second face. It should not be confused with a single-pass scanner that reads both faces in one transit.

The glass has an explicitly documented 8.5-by-14-inch maximum. That allows full-length Legal originals as well as Letter and A4, including material unsuitable for the feeder. Use it for photos, small items, fragile pages or a suitably thin book. Position the original at the marked corner and choose the correct original size to avoid an incomplete file.

Color capture and color output are both real functions here, though their operating figures differ. Lexmark declares simplex scans up to 20 Letter or 18 A4 sides per minute in black or color. Those scan figures do not predict reversing-duplex capture, file transfer or the complete time for a mixed office task.

Set up destinations and telephone service

USB Type-B connects a computer; 10/100 Ethernet connects the shared network. The original guide provides computer-scanning software and network Scan Profile or ScanBack routines. Create the destination and settings on the computer, then recall the profile at the machine. Confirm the output folder, permissions and file format before relying on a recurring scan job.

The front Type-A port is separate from the computer connection. It supports instructed flash-drive printing and scanning, with FAT formatting and supported file types. A password-protected PDF's file password is also different from a confidential print-job release PIN. Protected-job PIN release, AirPrint and Mopria are not qualified features here.

The 33.6-Kbps analog fax function needs an appropriate telephone connection and station information. Ethernet is not its ordinary fax transport. Digital telephone services need their documented adapters or filters and individual compatibility checks. Likewise, the optional external wireless print server is not an included radio or a confirmed wireless computer-scanning route.

Work with the supplied drawer

The base configuration has a 250-sheet drawer plus one-sheet manual feed, expressed as 250+1 at the maker's 20-pound or 75-gsm paper basis. Letter, Legal and A4 each fit the normal 250-sheet stack. Extend the drawer for longer paper and match size and type settings in the printer and computer software.

For an occasional envelope, use the instructed one-sided manual-feed routine with a suitable laser envelope. A 100-sheet multipurpose feeder belongs to the optional Duo Drawer, together with an additional 550-sheet drawer. The advertised 900+1-sheet maximum does not describe the supplied machine. Check actual installed hardware rather than using a product photograph as an inventory.

The 55,000-page maximum monthly duty figure is a separate upper-duty comparison. It does not change the recommended monthly ceiling of 3,000 pages, and the 25-ppm Letter rate is not a duplex printing claim.

Supplies, condition and the right alternative

The exact US page lists supplied 2,500-page black and 2,000-page color cartridges under ISO/IEC 19798. Replacement choices extend to 6,000 black and 4,000 color pages in the extra-high-yield range. Check supply region, Return Program conditions and the remaining toner in the actual offered machine; declared yield is not a live ownership-cost calculation.

This discontinued model weighs 60 pounds before packaging. Verify software support, condition, the electrical label and operating clearance around the glass and trays. An X544dn is the more suitable family alternative when automatic print duplex is essential. A documented single-pass MFP is the better comparison when two-sided scanning throughput drives the purchase.
