Aficio SP C221N (documented US120V configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible computer setup needing color Letter or Legal documents and accepting manual two-sided refeeding.

The main tradeoff

Automatic duplex and C222DN-only USB-host features are not included C221N functions.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can standard Ethernet combine color Legal printing and 250 included ordinary sheets?

Yes, with a compatible driver and the original standard-tray Legal extension correctly set.

Will it automatically print both sides without manual refeeding?

No. The exact C221N routine is manual duplex with a supported PCL driver.

Wired color printing with manual two-sided handling

The Ricoh Aficio SP C221N is an earlier print-only color laser printer for a compatible USB or Ethernet computer setup. It combines a standard 250-sheet cassette with a single-sheet bypass. The important distinction from the nearby SP C222DN is its manual duplex routine: this model does not acquire automatic two-sided hardware simply because the family shares a manual.

The original hardware guide describes a 120V/60Hz version as well as a separate higher-voltage version. Match the actual rear rating label before purchase. A familiar model name is not enough to settle the electrical configuration of an individual older offer.

Legal output uses the extended standard tray

The original loading chapter explains how to extend tray one for Legal paper. That involves removing the rear cover, extending the tray and setting its guides correctly. Legal handling is therefore a real standard-tray function, but the extended installation requires more room than the closed-body measurements suggest.

Letter and A4 are also supported. The optional 500-sheet TK1010 feeder has a narrower documented size scope of Letter and A4, so its extra capacity should not be applied indiscriminately to Legal jobs. The one-sheet bypass is an individual feed rather than another bulk paper supply.

Manual duplex depends on the intended driver

The software guide identifies the C221N manual-duplex function specifically and limits that routine to PCL5c and PCL6. After the first side prints, the user reloads the sheets into tray one and follows the printer's instructions. This creates two-sided documents through manual handling.

That is different from leaving a long duplex job unattended. It is also different from assuming that every PostScript or mobile printing route offers the same refeeding prompts. Select the machine only if the actual computer workflow and required amount of manual handling are acceptable.

Use the exact speed figure for the actual paper size

The original hardware table rates this model at 21 pages per minute on Letter and 20 on A4, in either monochrome or color. The slower C220N is separately specified and should not determine the C221N's assessment.

First-page timing, continuous engine output and completion of a whole document describe different things. The UK model overview also gives a maximum monthly duty figure. That limit is not a recommended everyday workload, an endurance test of the offered printer or a prediction of its remaining service life.

Included Ethernet does not imply native wireless printing

USB computer printing and 10/100 Ethernet are documented standard interfaces. Check the working driver for the actual operating system and configure the chosen connection. Network monitoring tools can help manage a wired printer, but their presence does not add a wireless radio or establish native AirPrint or Mopria.

The guide reserves the USB host and PictBridge function for the C222DN. Those family-level features should not appear as included C221N benefits. Likewise, an option to reduce an A3 or Tabloid document onto smaller supported sheets is not a native large-paper printing capability.

Check consumables, configuration and working space together

The original supplied cartridges are declared at 1000 pages each, while replacement cartridges and the separate waste bottle use their own stated conditions. Cleaning also consumes toner. Compare suitable supplies and the condition of the particular machine rather than translating a nominal cartridge yield directly into current operating costs.

The hardware guide lists a body of 15.8 × 17.8 × 12.8 inches and approximately 50.6 pounds with cartridges. Legal-tray extension and maintenance access require additional clearance. The original sources also disagree about the maximum memory upgrade, so that ceiling needs exact configuration checking. Choose around confirmed wired color output, supported paper and acceptable manual duplex rather than an assumed fully upgraded configuration.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact C221N/C222DN original hardware table:21 ppm Letter and 20 ppm A4 monochrome/color; C220N16 ppm not borrowed. First page14 seconds separate. UK C221n overview declares 30,000 maximum monthly duty, not a recommended monthly target.

Paper handling

250 ordinary sheets plus one-sheet bypass; optional 500-sheet TK1010 is separate. Standard tray extends for Legal with rear cover removed; Letter/A4 also supported. Optional TK1010 only Letter/A4. C221N manual duplex through PCL5c/PCL6 requires refeeding tray 1; do not borrow C222DN automatic hardware or PictBridge host.

Scanning arrangement

This is a dedicated printer. It has no document scanner, automatic document feeder, copying or fax function.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard USB 2 computer and 10/100 Ethernet. Compatible original PCL/PostScript computer drivers are documented; native mobile printing and Wi-Fi are not established. USB host/PictBridge is C222DN-only, not C221N. Network management does not supply a missing wireless radio.

Supplies and declared yields

Original1000-page starter cartridges; replacement 2000 each declared under stated A4/Letter 5% continuous conditions with ISO/IEC 19798 cited. Separate SP C220 waste bottle25,000 under 3 pages/job50%mono/color conditions. Cleaning consumes toner. No promised real-world life, current running cost or remaining consumable life.

Software and support

128 MB base memory; maximum upgrade ceiling conflicts between original hardware guide and UK overview, so no common ceiling claimed.300MHz exact C221n overview. Manual duplex is PCL5c/PCL6-only. PostScript language listed is not a genuine Adobe interpreter proof. PIN print procedure is unknown. Driver large-paper option reduces images to supported media.

Electrical edition and setup

Documented 120 V, 60 Hz version requires checking rear rating label. Original hardware guide body 15.8 × 17.8 × 12.8 in, 50.6 lb with cartridges; metric400 × 450 × 320 mm also printed. Tray extension for Legal and top/front service access enlarge working clearance. Two-person lifting is specified.
