Ricoh Aficio SP C231N review

A color network printer whose suffix changes the duplex answer

The Ricoh Aficio SP C231N is an earlier dedicated color laser printer with USB and wired Ethernet. It makes color and monochrome documents, but its two-sided routine is manual. That difference is essential when comparing it with the SP C232DN shown in the same brochure.

The exact US C231N is part 406505. It can fit a compatible wired color-document routine where automatic duplex is not required. If automatic two-sided printing is essential, the C231N should not appear as a qualifying result simply because a nearby family model includes it.

Manual duplex means handling the paper yourself

The specification explicitly separates C231N manual duplex from C232DN automatic duplex. A manual routine requires the supported driver instructions and correct paper reinsertion; it is not equivalent to the machine turning every sheet itself.

The brochure's automatic-duplex productivity statement therefore belongs to the C232DN. The C231N has a manufacturer-declared one-sided Letter rate of 21ppm in color or monochrome, but no complete manual two-sided job time is established. Paper handling and the actual document will affect that routine.

The basic ordinary stack is 250 sheets

The standard input combines a 250-sheet cassette with an individual single-sheet bypass. The bypass is useful for an instructed special-media job, but it is not another stack of ordinary sheets. Bulk-input matching counts the cassette's 250 sheets.

An optional 500-sheet feed unit supports Letter and A4. It explains the expanded 751-sheet headline when the single bypass is included. That figure does not describe the basic package, and the option's size list does not establish extra Legal capacity. Confirm whether the actual offer includes the drawer before using its capacity in a buying decision.

Start from USB or Ethernet, with wireless treated as an option

The C231N includes a USB computer interface and wired Ethernet. The SX-2500CG external wireless adaptor is optional hardware, and it cannot operate simultaneously with the wired Ethernet interface. A base machine should not qualify an essential ordinary Wi-Fi requirement without the actual supported option being confirmed.

The PictBridge host interface is another family distinction: it is listed for C232DN, not C231N. Neither that camera-printing feature nor an old network-protocol list establishes native AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct. Check the actual current computer and driver combination rather than relying on a broad historical compatibility label.

Controller and cartridge details need their own checks

The listed controller has 128MB of included memory, with a higher maximum requiring an option. PCL and PostScript emulation are documented print languages. More possible memory is not evidence of a document scanner or a particular private-print PIN release routine.

The original starter declaration is 1,000 pages for each color. SP C310A replacements are declared at 2,500 pages each, with SP C310HA declarations of 6,500 black and 6,000 per CMY color. These yields are useful for identifying the supply family, but do not establish the toner remaining in an older offered unit or today's page cost.

Plan the physical installation before choosing an older offer

The declared body is 15.7 × 17.7 × 12.6 inches and 50.7 pounds including consumables. Leave room for paper loading, cables and maintenance rather than fitting only the closed enclosure. The optional drawer adds height and weight below the printer.

The documented US edition uses 120V, 60Hz power. Verify the actual electrical label, supplied hardware and current driver support. The C231N is a defensible choice for supported wired color printing with manual paper handling; its shared brochure should not make it look like the automatic-duplex DN model.
