The controller is the important C231SF distinction

The Ricoh Aficio SP C231SF is an earlier color laser multifunction model with printing, copying, color scanning and conventional fax. It shares a body and much of its paper handling with the C232SF, but uses a different print controller: host-based DDST/GDI with 128MB of memory.

That difference matters when checking an older offer for a current computer. The C232SF's PCL and PostScript emulation should not be assigned to the C231SF. This assessment covers the US C231SF, part 406442, with its own supported driver rather than a generic family software promise.

Choose the right route for the original

The glass accepts originals up to 8.5 × 11.7 inches, suitable for Letter and A4. The 35-sheet feeder accepts supported loose originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches. A Legal-size sheet therefore needs the feeder route rather than being described as fully fitting the shorter glass.

The specified feeder is automatic, but automatic two-sided capture and single-pass scanning are not established. Duplex printing, duplex copying and putting both sides of an ID card on one sheet are separate functions. They do not prove the feeder scans both sides of each sheet automatically.

Computer scanning has explicit connection support

The original operating instructions specify TWAIN computer scanning over both USB and a network connection, using an installed scanner driver and a compatible application. That provides a documented computer-scanning route rather than assuming the general presence of a USB socket is enough.

Network folder, email and FTP destinations are also listed. Configure the real destination and permissions for the chosen route. Fax is separate again: it uses the specified G3 PSTN/PABX arrangement and a compatible telephone setup, not merely a working network scanning connection.

Automatic printing duplex does not establish every paper combination

The ordinary cassette holds 250 sheets, with a separate single-sheet bypass. An optional 500-sheet drawer supports Letter and A4. The expanded 751-sheet headline counts that option and the individually fed sheet, so it should not qualify a requirement for 500 included bulk sheets.

Automatic duplex printing is standard. The general input table lists Letter, Legal and A4, but does not separately establish each size's automatic-duplex permission. The questionnaire confirms the documented automatic feature when size is flexible, while leaving strict paper-specific duplex combinations unconfirmed.

Wired networking is included; wireless is additional

USB and Ethernet are standard interfaces. The external SX-2500CG wireless adaptor is optional and cannot operate simultaneously with wired Ethernet. A base configuration should not be presented as having included ordinary Wi-Fi without the actual compatible option being verified.

Native AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are not established by this older brochure. Its historical operating-system list also should not be read as a promise for every current computer. Check the exact DDST driver and scanner software for the intended system before choosing an older unit. Keep the supported driver installation files available.

Allow working space and inspect the supplies

The declared body is 16.54 × 19.41 × 18.74 inches, with a listed 66.14-pound weight whose consumable-inclusion basis is not specified here. Leave additional room for the feeder lid, original handling, paper loading and maintenance. Match the US 120V/60Hz electrical label.

The original starter declaration is 1,000 pages, with C310A and higher-yield C310HA replacements listed separately. These yields do not establish remaining toner or today's page cost. The C231SF is most relevant for a compatible wired color-document routine needing scanning and fax, provided the host-based controller and unconfirmed duplex-scanning capabilities suit the job.
