Ricoh Aficio SP C831DN review

A wide-paper color printer with included storage

The Ricoh Aficio SP C831DN is an earlier color laser printer for compatible shared document work. Its included 250GB disk and documented password-controlled collection distinguish it from the nearby C830DN, whose disk is optional. US part 407803 also has a different controller and declared output rate.

It remains a print-only machine. The 4.3-inch touchscreen helps operate print jobs and settings; it is not evidence of built-in scanning or copying. Finishing examples and broad family graphics should be evaluated against the actual supplied hardware.

Paper capacity depends on which cassette supports the size

Two 550-sheet cassettes and a 100-sheet bypass provide 1200 included sheets. The first cassette supports Letter, A4 and A5. The second supports larger formats including Legal, A3 and Tabloid. The useful ordinary capacity is therefore 1200 for Letter or A4, but 650 for those larger sizes.

The 4400-sheet maximum requires optional large-capacity trays. It is not a base-machine figure, and those extra trays have their own size restrictions. Count the actual installed units and the intended paper format rather than comparing only the largest headline total.

Automatic duplex and heavy media need precise boundaries

Automatic two-sided output is standard. The listed range supports ordinary Letter, Legal, A4 and Tabloid within the stated duplex conditions. A3 duplex is not independently treated as confirmed here because the brochure's inch and millimeter width figures disagree.

The bypass's broader one-sided weight range does not extend every heavy sheet into automatic duplex. Likewise, long custom media are different from wider cassette paper. A supported paper size and a supported finishing size should not be combined without checking the complete path.

Private collection has a documented basis in this configuration

The brochure describes password entry at the control panel for user-assigned tasks and holding sensitive documents until an authorized user releases them at the device. The 250GB disk supporting that workflow is standard on the C831DN. This is different from borrowing a storage-dependent feature into a basic C830DN.

Verify the compatible driver and administrator setup around the actual privacy routine. Memory expansion, storage encryption and controlled job collection are different functions, even when all appear in a long security section. The included disk also does not establish the service condition of an individual older machine.

Standard wired interfaces are different from optional upgrades

USB computer printing and 100Mbps Ethernet are standard. Gigabit Ethernet, wireless LAN and parallel connectivity are options. USB host ports and a panel SD slot support separate media tasks rather than adding a scanner.

Genuine Adobe PostScript 3, PCL and PDF Direct are documented. Generic smartphone-app or mobile-printing descriptions do not independently establish native AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct. Check the exact-model software and connection needed by the actual office before relying on an older operating-system list.

Plan the full finishing installation and separate service items

The base output limit is 500 sheets for Letter or smaller and 250 for Legal or larger. Stapling, booklet work, punching and larger stacking capacities require the actual finishing hardware, bridge and specified cabinet or paper arrangement. The mailbox's configuration rules also differ from some older Ricoh systems.

The manufacturer declares 55ppm color or monochrome output without an independently explicit paper-size condition here. The 120–127V/60Hz body measures 26.4 ×26.9 ×25.2 inches; its less-than 213-pound weight is an upper bound. Leave adequate paper and service access. Toner, drums, transfer parts, fuser and waste bottle have separate declarations. Choose the C831DN for a confirmed wired workflow, included private collection and the capacity of its actual paper paths.
