SP C840DN (408105,US)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired document routine needing color A3 output with 650 included large-paper sheets.

The main tradeoff

Private collection needs the optional disk. Genuine Adobe PostScript and finishing hardware require additional options.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can base Ethernet combine color A3 automatic duplex and 650 included A3 sheets?

Yes. The exact second-cassette/bypass arrangement and explicit duplex dimensions support that combination.

A wide-paper color printer with a large operating panel

The Ricoh SP C840DN is an earlier print-only color laser machine for compatible office document production. Its 10.1-inch operating panel, standard Gigabit Ethernet and broad automatic-duplex range are useful distinctions, but they do not make it a scanner or include every storage and finishing option.

This assessment concerns US part 408105. The nearby C842DN has a different declared rate and includes a disk that is optional on the C840DN. Those exact-model differences matter when choosing a private-collection workflow or comparing an older configured offer.

Letter and A4 capacity differ from larger-paper capacity

Two 550-sheet cassettes and a 100-sheet bypass total 1200 included sheets. The first cassette supports Letter, A4 and A5. The second supports larger formats including Legal, A3 and Tabloid. Ordinary included capacity is therefore 1200 for Letter or A4 and 650 for those larger sizes.

The 4700-sheet maximum requires extra large-capacity hardware. Those units have their own size and configuration rules, so the headline total should not become a promise for every paper format. Confirm the actual supplied banks and the intended document size before comparing loaded-paper capacity.

Automatic duplex supports A3 within a narrower weight range

The documented automatic-duplex range extends through 12.6 ×18 inches, supporting ordinary Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid. Its 52–256gsm weight range differs from the heaviest one-sided stock supported by the machine. A300gsm postcard capability should not be treated as a 300gsm duplex permission.

Long banners, labels, envelopes and finishing jobs also have their own routes and settings. The base output tray holds 500 smaller sheets or 250 Legal-size and larger sheets. Extra input therefore does not remove the need for output collection during longer work.

Genuine Adobe PostScript is an option, rather than the base language

The standard controller lists PostScript 3 and PDF Direct emulation. Genuine Adobe PostScript 3 and PDF Direct from Adobe are optional. An established graphics workflow that depends on the genuine interpreter should check the installed option rather than borrow the standard Adobe specification of an older Ricoh model.

The included 2GB memory, optional IPDS and other controller features serve different requirements. Verify exact-model drivers and the actual licensed or fitted capabilities needed by the office. A large touchscreen does not make those options automatically present.

Private password collection requires the optional disk

The brochure describes panel passcode access and Locked Print that holds documents for an authorized user. The disk supporting that storage-dependent workflow is optional on the C840DN. The basic model should therefore not satisfy an essential private-PIN requirement merely because security features appear in the family text.

The 320GB disk is included on the C842DN, which is a different configuration. Stored-document counts, personal folders and overwrite functions should be evaluated against the actual disk and administrator setup, rather than assigned to ordinary RAM.

Choose the actual network and finishing installation

Gigabit Ethernet and USB computer printing are standard. Wireless and other interface upgrades are options. NFC, Bluetooth or QR-code interaction with a Ricoh app does not independently prove an included ordinary wireless radio, Wi-Fi Direct, native AirPrint or Mopria.

Finishing and folding require their named hardware, bridge or folding unit, and the specified supporting paper or cabinet arrangement. The 120–127V/60Hz body measures 23.1 ×27 ×34 inches and is listed at 187 pounds. The manufacturer declares 45ppm without an independently explicit paper-size condition here. Choose the C840DN around a confirmed wired workflow, actual paper capacity and supported A3 duplex, then verify optional storage, interpreter, finishing hardware and separate service items.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The C840DN declares 45 ppm color/black without an independently explicit paper-size condition, so strict Letter fields remain unknown. C842 rates are not substituted.

Paper handling

Two 550-sheet cassettes plus 100 bypass sheets give 1200 total. The first handles smaller formats; Legal/A3/Tabloid input is 650. Explicit duplex dimensions cover these sizes at 52–256 gsm.

Scanning arrangement

This is a dedicated printer. It has no document scanner, automatic document feeder, copying or fax function.

Computer and mobile connections

Gigabit Ethernet and computer/host USB are standard. Wireless and other interfaces are optional, with one interface-option limit. NFC/Bluetooth/QR app interaction does not establish included Wi-Fi or native protocols.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact toner, drum, waste, transfer and fuser declarations are separate. The specified SRA3 imageable-area option has a fuser condition; starter yield and remaining life are not invented.

Software and support

Password-held Locked Print requires the optional 320 GB disk on C840DN. Standard PostScript/PDF emulation differs from optional genuine Adobe support. The touchscreen does not provide a scanner.

Electrical edition and setup

US C840DN 408105 uses 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Standard body: 23.1 × 27 × 34 inches, 187 lb with inclusion basis unspecified. Finishers and large-capacity input have configuration prerequisites.
