CLP-550NIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired computer workflow needing color duplex documents and 350 included Letter or A4 input sheets.

The main tradeoff

Legal capacity is 100 sheets through the multipurpose tray; wireless requires an optional card, and document scanning is absent.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB computer print automatic two-sided color Letter pages with 350 included sheets?

Yes with the exact model software and permitted ordinary paper. Letter uses the 250-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet multipurpose tray, and the original guide confirms automatic duplex. The declared one-sided color Letter rate is 5 pages per minute.

Can the standard Ethernet setup handle automatic Legal duplex with 100 Legal sheets and suitable envelopes in separate jobs?

Yes with configured networking and compatible software. Legal uses the 100-sheet multipurpose path, and the detailed duplex instructions permit suitable Legal stock. Envelopes follow a separate multipurpose routine and must not be duplexed.

CLP-550N adds a different language and network configuration

The Samsung CLP-550N is an earlier print-only color laser model for compatible computer workflows. Its useful combination is built-in wired Ethernet, USB, automatic print duplex and PostScript/PCL support. It can serve ordinary shared documents without requiring the wireless accessory shown in some family illustrations.

The model suffix matters. CLP-550N includes 128 MB of memory and Ethernet; the neighboring CLP-550 starts with 64 MB and treats networking differently. CLP-500N also belongs to the broader family but uses a different standard language configuration. Check the actual label and driver instead of treating these names as interchangeable.

Prepare the computer connection before choosing print features

For direct printing, connect the computer through USB and install compatible software for the exact model. The parallel port is another legacy interface, with its own cable and host requirements. It should not be mistaken for an additional USB connection.

For Ethernet, the original guide describes network protocols, a network-configuration report and either static addressing or DHCP/BOOTP. A working cable is only part of setup: the host must reach the configured printer and use a suitable model driver.

The original documentation also discusses PostScript software for period Macintosh and Linux systems. That historical coverage helps identify the printer's language capabilities but does not promise current operating-system support. Verify the software needed by the actual computer before depending on an older unit.

Legal duplex works through a smaller input path

The included 350-sheet capacity comprises a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. Ordinary Letter or A4 paper can use both. Legal is listed for the multipurpose path, so its included capacity is 100 sheets. The optional 500-sheet drawer does not belong in the base total.

The detailed duplex instructions permit suitable Letter, Legal and A4 paper at 75–90 gsm. This is more specific than the brochure's short A4/Letter duplex list. Choose the actual source, size, type and long- or short-edge binding together in the compatible software. Application settings override the control-panel defaults.

Automatic two-sided printing therefore can be useful for Legal documents, while still requiring more frequent replenishment than a Letter job. Duplex support changes how a sheet is printed; it does not make that sheet fit a different cassette.

Keep envelopes and wireless accessories separate

Suitable laser envelopes use only the multipurpose tray. The guide specifies flap-up loading with the stamp-area end entering first, a lightly adjusted width guide, and MP Tray, Envelope type and the actual size selected in software. Follow the construction and margin conditions, and keep envelopes out of the duplex routine.

The wireless antenna and interface are explicitly optional. Standard Ethernet does not establish included Wi-Fi, and neither connection alone establishes a native phone-printing service. A mobile-first workflow needs its own confirmed service and setup.

There is also no document scanner, copier or fax. The internal imaging unit forms the printed image; it is not hardware for capturing paper originals. A requirement to scan or copy should lead to a multifunction device.

Allow for maintenance and a substantial installation

Samsung declares up to 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black and five in color, with separate duplex image rates. These are manufacturer figures. The monthly duty ceiling is not a recommended recurring workload or a measurement of sustained performance.

Starter toner capacities differ from replacement declarations, and the imaging unit, transfer belt and waste container need separate attention. Check regional supply markings and the actual installed components. Declared yields cannot reveal a used machine's remaining life or current running cost.

Original tables and lifting instructions differ on precise weight, and the two sources differ slightly on body depth. Measure a tight installation directly, leave access for trays and covers, follow the two-person lifting instructions, and verify the unit's electrical label.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The original operating specifications declare up to 21 one-sided Letter pages/min in black, compared with 20 A4, and 5 color pages/min in either size. Separate duplex declarations are up to 9.6 black or 5 color images/min for A4/Letter. Those duplex figures are not one-sided Letter page rates. The 35,000-black-page monthly duty ceiling does not establish a recommended sustained workload, which remains unconfirmed.

Paper handling

Included ordinary-paper capacity is a 250-sheet Letter/A4 cassette plus 100-sheet multipurpose tray at the stated 75 gsm basis. Letter and A4 can use 350 sheets; Legal fits the multipurpose path with 100 sheets and does not fit the listed cassette sizes. A 500-sheet extra drawer is optional. The detailed original duplex routine permits Letter, Legal and A4 at 75–90 gsm. Set source, size, type and binding together; software overrides the panel defaults. Envelopes use only the multipurpose tray, up to ten under the stated conditions, flap up with the stamp-area end entering first. Adjust the guide lightly and choose MP Tray, Envelope and the actual size. Suitable laser envelopes, construction and margin limits apply; envelopes and other special stock do not use the duplex routine.

Scanning arrangement

This is a print-only color laser device with no document glass, automatic document feeder, copier or fax. The internal laser imaging unit is part of the print engine. Automatic duplex describes printing on both sides of an output sheet, not scanning a two-sided original.

Computer and mobile connections

CLP-550N includes USB 2.0, IEEE1284 parallel and 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. The reviewed USB and wired Ethernet arrangements use compatible installed Windows model software; the latter also requires configured TCP/IP settings. The original control panel can print a network-configuration page and choose static addressing or DHCP/BOOTP. The pictured wireless antenna and wireless network card are optional, so included Wi-Fi is not established. Parallel is a separate legacy interface rather than an extra USB port. Native AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct remain unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

Original declarations distinguish 7,000-page black and 5,000-page per-color replacements from 2,000-page black and 1,500-page color starters on the stated 5% coverage basis. These older declarations should not be renamed a later ISO yield. The imaging unit, transfer belt and waste toner container are separate maintenance items, with lives affected by black/color use and other stated conditions. Confirm exact regional supply markings and the actual machine’s installed state; no current price, stock or remaining-life claim is made.

Software and support

The exact CLP-550N has 128 MB of included memory and PostScript 3/PCL6-compatible emulation, with a documented maximum of 384 MB using appropriate optional memory. CLP-550 without N starts at 64 MB, while CLP-500N is a different SPL-C configuration. The original guide documents Windows printing and separate PostScript routines for period Macintosh and Linux systems. Those historical host lists do not guarantee current driver availability. A Confidential watermark is printed page content and does not establish PIN-held job release.

Electrical edition and setup

The brochure gives 510 x 467 x 405 mm while the operating table gives 510 x 470 x 405 mm. Width and height are approximately 20.1 and 15.9 inches; precise depth is unassigned because the sources disagree. The operating table and brochure state 32 kg with consumables, but setup and optional-tray lifting instructions state 35 kg including developer and cassette; precise weight is unassigned. Follow the manufacturer’s two-person lifting instructions and allow space for all covers, trays, cables and ventilation. The guide explicitly separates 110–127 VAC USA/Canada, 50/60 Hz, from 220–240 VAC editions. Verify the actual rating label on this earlier model.
