A useful fit for

Compatible shared reports needing ordinary Legal duplex and a supported desktop PIN-release setup.

The main tradeoff

Direct-app printing has different security conditions; extra paper and memory remain optional.

Wireless and the numeric control panel belong to this model

The Samsung ProXpress M3820DW includes wireless, Ethernet and USB in its original US configuration. It also has the display and numeric controls used by its documented secure-print routine. Those are useful distinctions from the simpler M3320ND, rather than features to transfer across the family automatically.

Choose the connection you will actually maintain. A compatible desktop on the wireless network and a supported Direct client use different arrangements. Verify the actual router, software and device before treating an earlier printer’s wireless label as complete compatibility.

Password release uses an enabled RAM Disk

The original guide describes enabling RAM Disk through the printer’s web settings. A compatible driver can then send a Confidential job with a password, and the user selects the stored job at the panel and enters that password to print.

The guide distinguishes these basic RAM-based modes from features needing optional memory or storage. It also warns that complex documents may exceed the available RAM space. Confirm the actual driver options and try the representative document you need, rather than assuming all held jobs have unlimited capacity.

Do not transfer that desktop-driver routine to every mobile app. A Direct connection password is a network credential, while a Confidential job password controls release. They solve different problems even when both involve entering a code.

The supplied ordinary-paper total is 300 sheets

The standard cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose input holds 50 ordinary sheets. An additional cassette is optional. The family’s maximum capacity therefore does not establish what you can load into a base offered unit.

A separate front input can keep another material ready while the main cassette holds ordinary stock. Tell the software which source, size and type to use. In a shared office, agree on default loading so someone else’s report does not unexpectedly consume letterhead.

Leave clearance to open the front feed and withdraw a loaded cassette. Access to cables, covers and toner also matters. A closed-body measurement is only the starting point for a usable shelf or work surface.

Automatic Legal duplex is an ordinary-document capability

The original instructions support automatic two-sided output for Letter, Legal and A4. A compatible report can finish without attended alternate-side refeeding. Check binding and orientation with a complete short document before sending a longer queue.

Envelopes, labels and other special materials require their own loading routine. A supported single-sided size range does not permit every material through an ordinary duplex path. Trial the actual stock in a small quantity before making it part of regular office work.

Choose the right consumable range

The original model column lists standard, higher-yield and extra-high-yield cartridges, but the largest family option belongs to the M4020 configuration. Check the exact compatible code before comparing a replacement offer.

A declared yield is not remaining toner or a current ownership-cost calculation. Consider the installed cartridge’s condition and replacements you can actually obtain. The original memory maximum similarly describes an upgrade, not standard supplied equipment.

Keep a copy of the printer’s configuration report with the intended queue settings. It helps distinguish an address change from a document or driver problem when a shared setup stops working.

Keep printing convenience separate from original capture

The M3820DW cannot scan, copy or fax originals. Its duplexer handles printed output. If incoming paperwork must become files, compare a multifunction machine with a documented original-handling route.

The declared Letter speed and duty ceiling are manufacturer specifications, not independent timing or reliability results. Check electrical labeling, feed behavior, network access and the Confidential routine on the offered unit. Choose this model when those verified arrangements fit; choose elsewhere when scanning or a larger supplied paper stack is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Declared 40 Letter ppm; maximum monthly duty 80,000 not recommended recurring volume.

Paper handling

Ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 supported, including actual automatic two-sided routine in original guide 195–196. Binding and media settings matter. Envelopes, labels and other special stock follow their own instructed bypass route; duplex permission is not borrowed from ordinary paper. Extra cassette is optional. Standard 250-sheet cassette+50-sheet multipurpose input=300 ordinary sheets; optional 520-sheet cassette raises total 820 only when installed.

Scanning arrangement

Print-only equipment, without a scanner, copying glass, document feeder or fax.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact DW includes USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n WiFi/Direct. US 2013 brochure says Ethernet 10/100, later 2016 US list says Gigabit; connection confirmed without transfer-rate promise. Separate compatible desktop wired/WiFi and supported Direct-client arrangements. AirPrint/Mopria not assigned without exact confirmed protocol arrangement.

Supplies and declared yields

Original standard / starter 3,000, high 5,000 and extra-high 10,000-page cartridges under ISO/IEC 19752; 15,000 family option belongs M4020. Current price/remaining life unknown.

Software and support

Original US brochure lists SPL, PCL5e/6, PS3 and legacy emulations; compatible actual driver required. Historical OS lists do not guarantee present support. Maximum memory and expanded permanent storage are not standard equipment. PIN-release desktop arrangement uses enabled RAM Disk, compatible Confidential print mode and panel Stored Job password. No extra memory needed for those basic modes, but complex jobs may need expansion. Direct-app route does not inherit PIN release.

Electrical edition and setup

Original exact US configuration reference. Approximate closed body 14.4 × 14.4 × 10.3 inches, not the shipping box. Allow tray, rear-path, cartridge and cable access. Actual offered electrical label requires checking.
