ProXpress SL-M3870FWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible office digitizing two-sided originals and producing black documents, with a configured network scan destination and supported confidential-print driver.

The main tradeoff

The feeder reverses originals rather than scanning both sides in one pass; RAM-based PIN jobs have capacity limits, and the added paper cassette is optional.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the Wi-Fi computer arrangement automatically scan both sides of Legal originals and release compatible print jobs with a PIN?

Yes with installed MFP software, a registered scan destination and RAM Disk confidential printing configured through SyncThru. The exact model’s reversing feeder accepts Legal originals within its declared size and margin conditions; compatible driver jobs are released at the keypad. Analog fax additionally needs its separate line.

M3870FW combines wireless sharing with automatic duplex capture

The Samsung ProXpress M3870FW is an earlier monochrome laser multifunction model with printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax. Its useful distinction is the 50-sheet reversing document feeder, alongside automatic two-sided output and both wired and wireless network connections.

It suits a compatible office workflow that handles two-sided originals and black document output. The feeder automatically captures both document sides by reversing the original; it does not provide single-pass duplex scanning. That difference matters if one-pass capture is a specific requirement.

Prepare the capture route and destination

The feeder supports suitable originals through Legal size within its declared document and effective-scan limits. Prepare a uniform stack, remove clips and staples, load originals face up and set the guides. Choose the correct original-side setting rather than assuming every scan automatically captures both sides.

The glass has a separate length limit of 297 mm. Letter and A4 originals fit within its capture and margin conditions, while a full Legal original belongs in the feeder. Place suitable glass originals face down at the upper-left registration guide, clearing the feeder first because it takes priority.

Color capture remains separate from output: this model prints and copies in black. A color scan, a duplex copy and a duplex printed computer file are different operations with their own settings.

Register computer scanning on the intended connection

Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the reviewed compatible Windows MFP arrangement. Install the scanner components and register the Scan to PC destination, including its ID and password when required. Network printing working successfully does not prove that this destination is ready.

USB provides a separate local computer route. The guide distinguishes local WIA scanning from compatible network TWAIN and WSD arrangements. The front USB memory interface is also different from the cable connection to a computer.

AirPrint uses its own certified-model and local-network conditions, including Bonjour/mDNS and IPP. Historical cloud and application names do not establish present availability, so confirm the software needed by the actual computer or mobile device.

PIN release is useful after RAM Disk configuration

The original USA brochure describes confidential jobs sent from the driver and released by entering their PIN at the numeric keypad. The operating guide supplies the configuration detail: enable RAM Disk through the printer's network administration interface, then use the compatible driver and the panel's Secured Job menu.

That is a real release workflow, rather than merely a login screen for network administration. It still has a capacity boundary. Complex documents can exceed RAM Disk capacity and may require optional memory; included confidential printing does not mean unlimited storage or compatibility with every driver.

Check paper paths, supplies and the fax line

The operating sources establish a 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. Suitable Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper can use that 300-sheet arrangement at the stated capacity basis. The additional 520-sheet cassette is optional.

Adjust the paper guides and duplex-unit guide for the actual size, then match device and driver settings. Special media use their own path and restrictions. The rear-output envelope routine is separate from the closed return path used for automatic duplex. Legal output also needs attention before excessive sheets accumulate.

Analog fax requires the LINE socket and compatible telephone service, separately from Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Check the integrated cartridge's regional markings and installed condition; the separate-drum design of some neighboring models does not apply here.

Finally, distinguish the recommended monthly print range from the maximum duty ceiling. Allow space for document handling, extended paper paths and maintenance, and verify the actual electrical label and present host-software support before installation.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The exact model declares up to 40 one-sided Letter pages/min, compared with 38 A4. The service table separately declares up to 20 Letter or 19 A4 duplex images/min. Scanner images/min and copy rates are separate. The exact manufacturer model page recommends 1,500–3,500 pages per month, while the 80,000-page duty figure is a maximum ceiling. These declarations are not measured performance or a recommendation to run at the ceiling.

Paper handling

The operating guide, exact USA brochure and current manufacturer model specification establish a 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet multipurpose tray, with the ordinary-paper table supporting Letter, Legal and A4 at the declared 80 gsm capacity basis. The 2016 configuration list’s one-sheet bypass line conflicts with those operating sources and is not used as the base feed description. A 520-sheet expansion cassette is optional. Adjust the tray guides and the duplex-unit guide for the actual Letter/Legal or A4 position; match source, size and type in the device and driver. Suitable envelopes use the multipurpose path under original stock, orientation, adhesive and margin conditions. The special-media rear-output routine is separate from automatic duplex, which requires the appropriate closed return path. Clear Legal output before excessive stacking; the guide warns about more than 50 one-sided Legal sheets in the output area.

Scanning arrangement

The exact model has a color CIS flatbed and a 50-sheet automatic reversing document feeder. The USA XAA list explicitly calls it RADF, so it supports automatic two-sided original capture without being single-pass. The feeder’s original range reaches 216 x 356 mm, with effective scan margins, while the glass is limited to 216 x 297 mm and its own margins. Letter and A4 fit both routes; Legal fits the feeder and is not assigned to the glass. Load feeder originals face up and suitable glass originals face down at the upper-left registration guide. Color capture does not provide color printed output.

Computer and mobile connections

M3870FW has standard Ethernet, USB and built-in Wi-Fi, with Wi-Fi Direct as a separate peer method. The reviewed Windows network MFP plan supports computer printing and scanning over Ethernet or infrastructure Wi-Fi, with a registered computer destination and compatible installed software. USB is a separate local MFP arrangement. A front USB memory port is not the computer USB connection. Ordinary fax additionally needs the LINE socket and compatible analog telephone service; it is not carried by the Ethernet or Wi-Fi radio. Historical cloud-print and app listings do not establish present service availability.

Supplies and declared yields

This exact 3870 model uses an integrated toner cartridge system rather than the separate drum arrangement of some 3875 relatives. The USA table identifies MLT-D203S at a declared 3,000 pages, MLT-D203L at 5,000 and MLT-D203E at 10,000 under ISO/IEC 19752, with a 3,000-page supplied cartridge declaration. The 15,000-page D203U entry belongs to the higher compatible model group and is not assigned to M3870FW. Check the exact regional cartridge, installed condition and software compatibility; declared yield is not remaining life or current running cost.

Software and support

Compatible Windows MFP software supports USB and network computer scanning. The USB routine uses Scan to PC; network operation needs installed scanner components, an enabled Scan to PC destination and its registered ID/password, or compatible network TWAIN/WSD software. The guide’s WIA routine is USB-specific. Included PIN-release printing is a distinct driver Confidential mode: enable RAM Disk through SyncThru Web Service, send a compatible job with its password, then use Job Management > Secured Job at the numeric-keypad panel to release or delete it. Complex jobs can exceed RAM Disk capacity and may need optional memory. This is not an unlimited storage promise. AirPrint has its own certified-model, local-network, Bonjour/mDNS and IPP conditions; desktop PIN, scanning and duplex settings are not borrowed into the mobile plan.

Electrical edition and setup

The later user guide and current exact-model manufacturer table agree on an approximately 469 x 444.3 x 482.1 mm body, or about 18.5 x 17.5 x 19 inches, and 17.07 kg including consumables, about 37.6 lb. Measurements exclude handset and other accessories. An earlier service summary gives inconsistent heavier weight and slightly different width, so the later operating guide and exact model table govern this body description. Extended paper handling, rear access and lifting the scanner need additional working room. The US XAA configuration and manufacturer table establish a 110–127 VAC, 50/60 Hz edition; a separate 220–240 VAC edition also exists. Verify the actual rating label.
