Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the compatible USB setup print in black, scan Letter originals in color and make standalone copies?
Yes with the exact MFP driver and compatible scanning application. The device has a color CIS flatbed, and the original instructions explicitly route scanning through the assigned USB port. Place each original on the glass; there is no document feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it print Legal documents from the 250-sheet cassette and handle suitable envelopes separately?
Yes with compatible software and the proper loading settings. Legal is an ordinary-paper cassette size. Envelopes use the separate one-sheet manual path with its instructed flap orientation, source, type and rear output routine; they are not loaded into the cassette.
Explore this need in the finder →Does Legal printing mean the flatbed can scan an entire Legal original?
No. The original scanner specification limits document length to 297 mm, about 11.7 inches. Letter and A4 fit within that declared capture area, while a 14-inch Legal original exceeds it.
Explore this need in the finder →SCX-4100 combines black output with color original capture
The Samsung SCX-4100 is an earlier three-function machine for a compatible computer desk: black-and-white laser printing, standalone copying and color flatbed scanning. It suits occasional individual originals and ordinary document output, provided the actual computer can run the model's MFP software.
Its color scanner does not make it a color printer. The original print specification is black output at up to 15 one-sided Letter pages per minute, compared with 14 A4. Those are manufacturer declarations, separate from copy rates and the time required to capture an original.
USB scanning needs the MFP driver and a working application
The device has USB 1.1 and a separate parallel interface. The reviewed USB arrangement uses compatible Windows model software for printing and scanning. The original instructions explicitly say that scanning uses the same assigned USB or LPT port as the printer, rather than an independent network scanner connection.
Install the MFP driver, then use compatible SmarThru or TWAIN software. A print-only queue is not proof that scanner software is installed. Place the original face down on the glass, align it with the upper-left registration guide, close the cover and choose the scan settings and destination in the application.
SmarThru can send the captured image to computer destinations such as an application, folder or OCR routine. Email and web targets depend on the computer's software and configuration. They are different from a printer independently emailing scans over its own network connection.
The glass fits Letter and A4, while Legal remains a print size
The original scanner table specifies a maximum document area of 216 by 297 mm, with a narrower effective scan width. Letter and A4 are suitable declared original sizes, subject to placement and margins. A full 14-inch Legal original exceeds the glass's length allowance.
Legal nevertheless is a supported ordinary-paper print size in the 250-sheet cassette. That distinction matters when replacing a device: printing a long form does not establish that the same machine can capture that form in one scan.
There is no automatic document feeder. Each sheet needs placement on the glass, and a two-sided original needs manual turning. The advertised two-sides-in-one ID-copy feature combines two captures on one printed side; it is not automatic duplex scanning or automatic two-sided output.
Keep special media on the manual path
The cassette holds up to 250 sheets of suitable ordinary paper under the stated capacity conditions. A separate one-sheet manual feeder handles suitable envelopes and other special stock. Treat it as an operator-fed path rather than an additional unattended paper reserve.
For a suitable laser envelope, the guide specifies flap-down loading with the stamp area at the top left. Adjust the guide, follow the rear-output instruction and select the actual source, size and media type. Another Samsung family's flap-up routine should not be substituted.
This machine also lacks included analog fax hardware. Computer software mentioning fax-related image handling does not add a telephone modem to the printer. A workflow requiring independent fax transmission needs a model with a documented telephone setup.
Check supplies, working space and realistic volume
The original sources distinguish the smaller supplied starter cartridge from the replacement yield declaration. Confirm the actual regional cartridge markings and installed state. Neither a declared yield nor a toner-save setting can establish current running cost or the remaining life of a used cartridge.
The monthly print duty ceiling and separate scan limit are different measures. They should not be read as recommended recurring workloads. Likewise, historic software lists do not guarantee present driver availability.
Leave room to raise the document cover and reach the manual feeder and rear output. The sources differ on net weight, so avoid a precise weight-limit assumption. Check the actual electrical label and assess the complete computer-and-printer setup before relying on this earlier model.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The exact original printer specifications declare up to 15 one-sided Letter pages/min in black, compared with 14 A4. This model does not print color. Copy rates are a separate single-document/multiple-copy declaration, and scanner timing is not a print rate. The guide distinguishes a 10,000-page maximum monthly print duty figure from a 2,000-page scan limit. Neither is a recommended monthly print range; a service document’s average volume is not relabeled a recommendation.
Paper handling
The main cassette holds 250 sheets of suitable ordinary paper at the stated 75 gsm basis and accepts Letter, Legal and A4. A separate single-sheet manual path handles suitable special media. The reviewed capacity is the cassette’s 250 sheets, without representing the one-sheet operator-fed path as extra unattended storage. Suitable envelopes go one at a time in the manual feeder, flap down with the stamp area at the top left. Adjust the guide, use the rear output slot as instructed, and select the correct manual source, media type and size. Observe the original stock and margin limits. Automatic print duplex is absent; two-sides-in-one copying does not establish it.
Scanning arrangement
The model includes a color CIS flatbed scanner and standalone black-and-white copying, with no automatic document feeder. Original capture is specified to a maximum 216 x 297 mm, accommodating Letter or A4, with a narrower effective scan width of 208 mm and required placement/margins. Legal printing does not establish Legal glass capture. For USB computer scanning, install the MFP driver and use compatible SmarThru or TWAIN software. Place the original face down at the upper-left registration guide, close the cover and choose the destination and scan settings in the application. Two-sided originals require manual turning; two-sides-in-one ID copying places two captures on one output page rather than providing automatic duplex scanning.
Computer and mobile connections
The exact device has USB 1.1, compatible with USB 2.0 hosts as described by the guide, plus a separate IEEE1284 parallel interface. The reviewed plan uses a compatible Windows computer, the exact MFP driver and USB for printing and computer scanning. The original scanning instructions explicitly use the same assigned LPT or USB printer port. Parallel is documented separately and is not an Ethernet connection or an additional USB port. Local printer sharing depends on a host and does not establish an included network scan interface. Native Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct are unconfirmed.
Supplies and declared yields
The original brochure and guide distinguish a declared 3,000-page replacement cartridge from the supplied 1,000-page starter using their ISO 19752/5% coverage wording. Verify the actual regional SCX-4100D3 supply markings and installed condition. A toner-save setting can affect output and yield but does not establish a present cost per page or remaining life. Cartridge declarations, machine duty ceilings and service-life figures are separate measures.
Software and support
The original model uses SPL printing and 8 MB of fixed memory. Compatible Windows MFP software provides printing and scanning; a print driver alone should not be assumed to install a working scanner. SmarThru destinations such as an image, folder, OCR, email or web publication use the computer and its configured software. Fax-related computer software descriptions do not establish an included analog fax modem or telephone arrangement on this three-function model. Period software lists do not guarantee current driver availability. PIN-held job release remains unconfirmed.
Electrical edition and setup
Original sources agree on a 422 x 400 x 239 mm closed body, approximately 16.6 x 15.8 x 9.4 inches. Leave space above for the document cover and around the machine for manual feeding, rear output, ventilation and cables. Printed net weights differ across the brochure, later guide and FCC draft, so no precise weight-limit value is assigned; packaging weights are separate. The original guide explicitly lists a 110–127 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 4 A edition and a separate 220–240 VAC edition. Check the actual unit’s rating label and computer software before relying on this earlier machine.
