SCX-4200Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible computer desk handling occasional Letter or A4 originals and black document output without a document-feeder requirement.

The main tradeoff

There is no fax, feeder or automatic duplex; Legal printing does not make the glass long enough for a full Legal original.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the compatible USB setup print in black, scan A4 originals in color and make standalone copies?

Yes with installed model MFP software and a compatible scanning application. The exact device has a color flatbed and supports A4 originals within its capture and margin limits. Each original is placed on the glass because there is no feeder.

Can it print Legal documents from the ordinary 250-sheet tray and handle suitable envelopes separately?

Yes with the proper tray adjustment and compatible print settings. Legal is listed in the ordinary-paper table, while envelopes use a one-sheet special-media routine with their own stock and margin conditions. The manual path is not extra unattended paper storage.

Can a Legal original be scanned in full on the flatbed just because Legal paper prints?

No. The glass capture length is limited to 297 mm, about 11.7 inches. A 14-inch Legal original exceeds that limit, even though the printer accepts Legal output paper.

SCX-4200 serves a USB desk with occasional original capture

The Samsung SCX-4200 is an earlier black-and-white laser multifunction model combining printing, standalone copying and color flatbed scanning. It suits a compatible computer desk handling individual originals rather than unattended document batches.

Its ordinary-paper tray holds 250 suitable sheets, while its USB connection supports the reviewed computer printing and scanning arrangement. The practical checks are whether the actual host can run the model's MFP software and whether placing originals on the glass fits the way documents are handled.

The scanner adds color capture, without adding color printing

The original scanner specifications identify a color CIS flatbed. A color original can be captured as a computer image, while printed pages and standalone copies remain black and white. A color scan specification should not become a color-output promise.

The glass accommodates Letter and A4 originals within its declared size and margin conditions. Its maximum capture length is 297 mm, so a full 14-inch Legal original does not fit in one capture. Legal output paper is a separate capability of the print path.

Place an original face down at the upper-left registration guide and close the cover without moving it. There is no document feeder. Two-sided originals need manual turning, and special copy routines such as ID Card and 2-UP combine captures on one printed side rather than provide automatic duplex.

Install the scanning components and verify USB communication

The reviewed setup uses compatible Windows MFP software and USB 2.0. The scanning chapter describes TWAIN, WIA and SmarThru applications, with a requirement to install the scanner software. A working print queue by itself does not demonstrate that original capture is ready.

Scan-to-file, OCR, email and web destinations depend on the computer application and its configuration. They do not establish an independent network scanner in the printer. Likewise, a shared software chapter mentioning a network-connected Macintosh does not add an Ethernet socket to this exact machine.

The original USB setup includes Fast and Slow communication modes for hosts that have trouble with the default. That is a troubleshooting choice within a USB arrangement, rather than a second connection method or a present software-support guarantee.

Adjust the tray for longer paper and separate special media

The supported ordinary-paper table includes Letter, Legal and A4 at the stated capacity basis. Extend the input tray and adjust its length and width guides for the stock being used. Avoid forcing the guides tightly enough to bend the stack.

The single-sheet manual path is useful for suitable special materials, but it is not an additional unattended paper reserve. Select the actual paper source, type and size in the compatible computer application; driver choices override the panel's copying defaults.

Suitable laser envelopes have construction, weight and margin limits and use the one-sheet special-media routine. Follow the exact model's loading directions and rear-output conditions rather than borrowing a different printer's envelope orientation. Automatic two-sided printing is absent.

Keep workload declarations and supply life in perspective

The original print table declares up to 19 one-sided Letter pages per minute, compared with 18 A4. Copy rates are separate declarations, and the neighboring SCX-4200R has different copy figures. These are manufacturer figures rather than reproduced performance measurements.

The original USA brochure and a later guide differ on memory and the monthly duty ceiling. Those differences do not establish a recommended recurring workload or justify a precise claim about every regional unit. Confirm the actual edition where those limits matter.

Starter and replacement cartridge declarations also differ. Check regional supply markings and the installed state; declared yield cannot establish remaining life or current running cost.

Leave working space above the glass and around the extended paper tray and rear output. Verify the electrical label. A compact closed body still needs access for document placement, media changes and maintenance.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The exact original printer table declares up to 19 one-sided Letter pages/min in black, compared with 18 A4. Copy rates are separate single-document/multiple-copy declarations; the SCX-4200R variant’s slower copy figures are not assigned to SCX-4200. This machine does not print color. The 2007 USA product table gives a 4,000-page monthly duty ceiling while the reproduced guide gives 10,000; that unresolved edition difference leaves the precise ceiling unassigned. Neither figure establishes a recommended monthly print range.

Paper handling

The ordinary-paper input tray holds 250 sheets at the original 75 gsm basis. Its supported paper table includes Letter, Legal and A4, and the setup instructions extend the paper input tray and adjust its length guides for longer stock. A single-sheet manual path handles suitable special media; it is not counted as additional unattended capacity. For manual media, adjust the guides without bending the sheet and select the actual source, type and size in compatible PC software, whose settings override the panel’s copying defaults. Suitable laser envelopes have their own construction, weight and margin conditions and use the single-sheet special-media routine. Do not substitute a different model’s flap orientation. Automatic print duplex is absent.

Scanning arrangement

The scanner is a color CIS flatbed without an automatic document feeder. Original capture is specified to a maximum 216 x 297 mm, with a narrower effective scan width of 208 mm. Letter and A4 are supported original sizes under placement and margin conditions; a full 14-inch Legal original exceeds the glass length. Place the original face down at the upper-left registration guide and close the cover without moving it. USB scanning requires installed compatible scanner software and a supported TWAIN, WIA or SmarThru application. Two-sided originals require manual turning. ID Card and 2-UP copying combine captures on one output side rather than establish automatic duplex.

Computer and mobile connections

The exact model has a computer USB 2.0 connection. The reviewed arrangement uses compatible Windows MFP software for printing and computer scanning plus standalone copying. The original setup calls for a suitable USB cable no longer than 3 m and describes Fast and Slow USB modes if the default causes poor communication on a particular host. Those modes are troubleshooting settings, not different network connections. Included Ethernet, Wi-Fi and native AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct are not established by generic family software chapters.

Supplies and declared yields

The exact USA table identifies SCX-D4200A and distinguishes a declared 3,000-page replacement from the supplied 1,000-page starter. The operating guide uses its ISO 19752/5% coverage wording and notes that use conditions affect life. Check the actual regional cartridge markings and installed state. These declarations do not establish present remaining toner, current stock or running cost. A toner-save setting trades output quality against consumption and is not a guaranteed cost figure.

Software and support

Use the exact model’s compatible MFP print and scanner software; a print-only driver does not prove a usable scan setup. The original scanning chapter describes computer files and TWAIN, WIA or SmarThru Scan To. Email, OCR and web destinations depend on the computer application and its configuration, not an independent network-scanning interface. The USA brochure and a later guide differ on stated memory, so no memory amount is promised. Generic Macintosh network instructions in shared software are not evidence of an Ethernet port on SCX-4200. Historic host lists do not guarantee current driver availability.

Electrical edition and setup

The original guide and USA brochure agree on the approximately 409 x 362 x 232 mm body, or 16.1 x 14.3 x 9.1 inches. The guide states 9.3 kg including consumables and the USA brochure gives approximately 20.5 lb; packaging weight is separate. A service summary repeats inconsistent older inch dimensions alongside the correct metric values, so those mismatched inch figures are not substituted. Allow room to lift the scan cover, extend the paper tray and use the rear output. The guide explicitly identifies 110–127 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 4 A for USA/Canada and a separate 220–240 VAC edition. Verify the actual rating label.
