SCX-4521FIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible USB computer desk needing printing, color original capture, standalone copies and a separately configured telephone-line fax workflow.

The main tradeoff

The feeder accepts Legal originals while the glass is shorter; automatic duplex and an included Ethernet interface are absent.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the documented USB and telephone-line setup print, scan Legal originals in color, copy and fax?

Yes with compatible MFP software and a separately configured regional LINE fax connection. The simplex feeder accepts Legal originals and the paper tray accepts Legal output. Fax uses the documented compatible telephone service; USB handles the computer printing and scanning connection.

Can it scan Letter originals on the glass in color and make black copies while using USB?

Yes with the exact compatible scan software. The color flatbed supports Letter within its original size and margin limits. Remove any originals from the feeder, place the sheet face down at the glass guide and use the correct scan or copy routine.

Does Legal support in the feeder mean a full Legal original fits on the flatbed?

No. The feeder supports up to 356 mm original length, while the glass capture length is 297 mm. Requiring a Legal-capable flatbed excludes this model even though Legal feeder capture and Legal printing are supported.

SCX-4521F combines a computer workflow with separate telephone fax

The Samsung SCX-4521F is an earlier black-and-white laser multifunction machine with color scanning, standalone copying and analog fax. It fits a compatible USB computer desk that still needs paper originals and a properly configured telephone-line fax service.

The F variant matters: the related SCX-4321 does not have the same fax hardware. The original guide shows separate LINE and computer connectors on SCX-4521F, so a working USB print connection should not be mistaken for a completed fax installation.

The feeder captures Legal originals, while the glass is shorter

The included simplex document feeder holds up to 30 suitable original sheets under the stated paper conditions. Its original-size allowance extends to Legal. Load the documents face up and adjust the guides, avoiding damaged sheets, mixed stocks and attached staples.

The flatbed serves books and individual originals, with a capture length of 297 mm. Letter and A4 fit within the declared route limits; a full 14-inch Legal original does not. Legal printing or feeder capture therefore should not be presented as a Legal-sized glass.

For glass work, remove documents from the feeder, which otherwise takes priority. Place the original face down at the upper-left guide. ID Card Copy captures the front and back after manual turning and places them on one printed side; it is different from automatic duplex scanning or printing.

Install the scan software as well as the print driver

The reviewed computer arrangement uses USB and compatible Windows MFP software. The original instructions explicitly say that scanning uses the same assigned USB or parallel printer port. They also instruct using only one of those interface cables at a time.

Computer scanning needs the scan driver and a compatible TWAIN or WIA application. To start a scan from the panel, configure the destination application list in the Printer Settings Utility, select the application through Scan-to and start the capture.

The historical software chapters contain additional computer destinations and services. Those examples do not establish an included network interface or guarantee that the old service still operates. Confirm the exact host software before relying on this earlier machine.

Manual paper feeding can delay immediate fax output

The ordinary-paper tray holds 150 suitable sheets and accepts Letter, Legal and A4. Special materials have a separate one-sheet routine, either through the manual path or a single-special-sheet tray arrangement. Do not turn those modes into an additional unattended paper reserve.

For the PC manual-feed procedure, load the permitted material print side up, adjust the guide and select Manual Feed with the correct type and size. The machine prompts for paper and requires Start for each sheet. Follow the envelope construction limits rather than treating any envelope as suitable.

The guide notes that incoming faxes are stored in memory during this noncontinuous manual-feed mode instead of printing immediately. That matters at a desk expecting a fax to emerge while someone is working through special-media pages.

Configure fax conditions and assess output realistically

Analog fax requires the regional line cord in LINE and a compatible telephone service or supported PABX arrangement. Set the receive mode and follow the original sending routine. Extension phones and answering machines have their own connection conditions.

Conditional color fax transmission requires a compatible receiving machine and manual sending. It does not make SCX-4521F a color printer. Likewise, secure fax receiving is different from holding computer print jobs for PIN release.

The reviewed guide declares up to 20 one-sided Letter pages per minute; other regional service editions give different figures. Keep those editions separate. The monthly duty ceiling is also different from a recommended recurring workload.

Check the actual regional cartridge, starter-versus-replacement declaration and installed condition. Leave working space for the feeder, document cover and paper tray, and verify the electrical label. Declared supplies and historic software lists cannot establish remaining life, current running cost or present driver availability.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The reviewed original user guide explicitly declares up to 20 one-sided pages/min in both A4 and Letter for black printing, and the 2005 USA product sheet advertises up to 20 ppm. A different SCX-4521F/TEC service edition advertises 22 Letter/20 A4, which is not substituted into this reviewed arrangement. Copy rates and fax transmission times are separate declarations, not print rates. The guide’s 4,200-page monthly print duty ceiling does not establish recommended monthly volume.

Paper handling

The included ordinary-paper tray holds 150 sheets at the stated 75 gsm basis and supports Letter, Legal and A4. A one-sheet manual route or a single-special-sheet use of the tray is a different mode, not another 150-sheet paper store or an unattended 151-sheet promise. Suitable envelopes and other special materials are fed one sheet at a time under their stock conditions. For the PC manual-feed routine, load print side up, adjust the guide, select Manual Feed with the actual type and size, and press Start when Add Paper & Press Start appears for each sheet. Incoming faxes are stored in memory while this noncontinuous manual-feed mode is active. Automatic print duplex is not included.

Scanning arrangement

Original specifications identify a color CIS flatbed and a 30-sheet simplex automatic document feeder under the stated original conditions. The glass capture length is 297 mm, accommodating Letter/A4 originals with required margins; the feeder supports originals up to 216 x 356 mm, including Legal, with a narrower effective scan width. Computer scanning uses the same assigned USB/LPT port and installed MFP scan software. Use compatible TWAIN/WIA software or configure an application for Scan-to. Load the ADF face up and adjust its guides, or place one original face down at the glass’s upper-left guide. ADF originals take priority over the glass. Automatic two-sided scanning is absent; ID Card Copy requires manual turning and prints the two captures on one side.

Computer and mobile connections

The device includes USB 1.1, described as compatible with USB 2.0, plus a separate IEEE1284 parallel port. The guide instructs using one computer interface cable at a time. The reviewed arrangement uses compatible Windows MFP software and USB for printing and computer scanning, with independent standalone copying. Analog fax additionally needs the correct regional telephone connection to the LINE jack and a compatible PSTN/PABX setup. A telephone line is separate from USB and is not an Ethernet connection. Included Wi-Fi and native AirPrint, Mopria or Wi-Fi Direct are unconfirmed.

Supplies and declared yields

The original guide distinguishes a 3,000-page replacement declaration from a 1,000-page supplied starter, using its ISO 19752/5% coverage wording and stated environmental/media conditions. Check the actual regional cartridge markings and installed condition. Declared cartridge life is separate from monthly duty, present remaining toner, stock or cost per page.

Software and support

Use the exact model’s compatible MFP driver for printing and scanning; a print-only driver is insufficient for a confirmed scan setup. Scan-to application lists need configuration in the Printer Settings Utility. The SPL print language and fixed print memory differ from another family’s PCL/PostScript arrangement. Historical software chapters and social-upload examples do not guarantee current drivers, services or accounts. The guide’s secure fax receiving feature is different from PIN-held print-job release, which remains unconfirmed.

Electrical edition and setup

The original guide gives a 438 x 374 x 368 mm body, approximately 17.2 x 14.7 x 14.5 inches, and 10.4 kg including consumables, about 22.93 lb by conversion. Packaging weights are separate. Allow clearance for the feeder, document cover, paper tray and ventilation; the guide specifies substantial front access for the tray and door. Its power table distinguishes 110–127 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 4.5 A from a separate 220–240 VAC edition. Check the unit’s actual rating label, regional telephone connection and host software.
